Elton John - Indian Sunset Lyrics

As I awoke this evening with the smell of wood smoke clinging
Like a gentle cobweb hanging upon a painted teepee
Oh I went to see my chieftain with my warlance and my woman
For he told us that the yellow moon would very soon be leaving
This I can't believe I said, I can't believe our warlord's dead
Oh he would not leave the chosen ones to the buzzards and the soldiers guns

Oh great father of the Iroquois ever since I was young
I've read the writing of the smoke and breast fed on the sound of drums
I've learned to hurl the tomahawk and ride a painted pony wild
To run the gauntlet of the Sioux, to make a chieftain's daughter mine

And now you ask that I should watch
The red man's race be slowly crushed
What kind of words are these to hear
From Yellow Dog whom white man fears

I take only what is mine Lord, my pony, my squaw, and my child
I can't stay to see you die along with my tribe's pride
I go to search for the yellow moon and the fathers of our sons
Where the red sun sinks in the hills of gold and the healing waters run

Trampling down the prairie rose leaving hoof tracks in the sand
Those who wish to follow me I welcome with my hands
I heard from passing renegades Geronimo was dead
He'd been laying down his weapons when they filled him full of lead

Now there seems no reason why I should carry on
In this land that once was my land I can't find a home
It's lonely and it's quiet and the horse soldiers are coming
And I think it's time I strung my bow and ceased my senseless running
For soon I'll find the yellow moon along with my loved ones
Where the buffaloes graze in clover fields without the sound of guns

And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of gold
And peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole

Makes me angry, sad and ashamed.

    S.... J....

don,t be mad be happy we can,t do anything about yesterday we can make sure it doesn,t happen for ever more i love my brothers

    S.... J....

Don't be. Conquest is brutal and shameful, and we can't erase what happened in the past. We can only learn from it, and salvage what little is left. Be happy that we have the luxury of the latter.

    S.... J....

Lol whe white guilt is strong in this one

  23. S.... K....

Beautiful but sad song. Brilliant music

  29. M.... F....

My favorite and most underrated song of his...

  30. L.... D....

it wasn't Geronimo who was shot it was CRAZY HORSE.But it was still an excellent song .His passion in this song gives me goosebumps.

  31. D.... I....

It was CRAZY HORSE, not Geronimo, who was shot while possibly surrendering in 1877. Geronimo died an old man and still a POW in 1908.

    D.... I....

very true about it being Crazy Horse.. but the brilliance of the song is not hampered by that. Black Kettle shot down at Washita .. all women and children murdered and 700 horsed by G.S. Custer.. sad..

    D.... I....

Thousands were sent to try and capture crazy horse he came down from the hills and laid down his weapons and the saying I will fight no more forever was heard and the yellow moon and peace to this warrior

  32. A.... D....

Another beautiful song by a legend! Great video , thank you for sharing.

  39. J.... ....

What a wonderful true soul elton is and always will be in my heart & soul Jove you til my end!!!!!!

  40. V.... o....

Gorgeous, I remember LOVING this growing up. Still love it all these years later, deep. Miss the old times! Still brings tears to my eyes :D

  41. P.... F....

Brilliant song Elton John it will be a sad day when you sink into the hills of gold

  42. F.... ....

Our people...how one's love for our way, our life, and all of mother earth to be embraced and truly cherished, as She has us. Elton shared this sad, yet poetically beautiful song to my ears and heart many years ago...so many happy memories of my people come. Ani basi ( thanks).

  43. J.... M....

I bought the Madman album twice, record and cassette. Unfortunately not enough other people did, leading to Elton claiming it to be the biggest disappointment of his career. Probably why he moved from the big orchestral sound to lighter rock, which was a shame.

    J.... M....

    J. McC Elton John is a musical genius.. The songs he sang will live forever in this old rockers heart, and forever in my mind. A truly great and collectable album. One of my most favorite of all time..

  44. J.... J....

    peace to this young warrior

  45. t.... b....

i just love it.... <3 best song ever

  46. a.... s....

I want this song played at my funeral. It's one a song that describes life, struggle, conviction, death, and freedom; in that order.

    a.... s....

i understand, what u mean. though i would prefer kirlian camera- eclipse, but this isnt bad for this case as well^^

  47. W.... C....

    Great song

  48. H.... J....

    tears and goose bumps......supernatural song

  49. B.... M....

Everytime I hear this song it makes me cry, can't believe how Bernie Taupin pegged it so perfectly and Elton completed this sad but beautiful song.

    B.... M....

B.K. Mcl thank u for getting it mad props

  50. T.... ....

Here for my Making Of America History mock exam!

  51. L.... G....

Am I the only one thinking that Bernie's cute?

  52. D.... ....

Of all Eltons' great songs, this one is my Absolute Favorite...pure poetry. Seems a shame they didn't use this as the closing song in Costners'; Dances with Wolves.

  53. B.... C....

First time I heard this song wow blown away

  54. s.... b....

RIP Paul Buckmaster. What an amazing talent we have lost.

  55. M.... M....

    the real deal

  56. T.... P....

A deeply moving song, I can't help but feel compassion for the plight of all of the displaced people in the world when I hear it...

    T.... P....

I agree. Everytime I listen to this song, I cry by the time the last verse is completed. :'(

  57. A.... -....

    This song is perfect !

  58. C.... W....

It's amazing how Elton and Bernie are from England but they know a lot about American history.

    C.... W....

Because you don’t have to be from a certain country to know about it’s culture/history

    C.... W....

If Elton John really knew, he most certainly wouldn't have used the term- squaw in this song which is highly offensive; a term created by the European settlers, with extremely derogatory meaning... especially when I do believe he essentially had good intentions in writing the song.

    C.... W....

True, but I do not think that was well known almost 50 years ago. I squirmed, too when I saw/heard the word - then I had to remind myself this was written in 1970...

    C.... W....

    Yes, but it helps :-)

  59. R.... R....

This song is my THERAPY to life

  60. d.... ....

what a fantastic song, this is just timeless.

  61. L.... S....

    love love love this song.

  63. J.... I....

This song for Read Dead Redemption 2 pls

    J.... I....

Jeka Imba hell yeah. That'd be amazing. Like the protagonist befriends the native Americans or something along those lines. Or the main protagonist is a native American.

    J.... I....

Jeka Imba straight out, this song would look cool as shit if you get caught up in some wild battle with a tribe against invaders.(On the Tribe's side naturally) and you sadly lose. That would be badass

  64. c.... i....

    this song blows me away

  65. n.... ....

As a regular radio listener, i often hear about "Great new singer songwriters": they usually have 5 half reasonable hits and disappear forever. Apart from Ed Sheeran, none come close to Elton's songwriting ability, which is genius.

    n.... ....

nickhall1000 please don't compare ed Sheeran to this.

    n.... ....

Technically it was Bernie who wrote it... the lyrics... Elton did the score.

    n.... ....

Dear god, please never ever again compare a mediocre musician like ed sheeran to a legend like Elton John. Don't embarrass yourself.

  66. k.... ....

    I love 2 Pac.

  67. J.... A....

I played this tonight in tribute to the Water Protectors. They stayed and put up a tremendous Honor for their land and to make sure treaties are kept. As a White Eyes I am truly sorry we can move forward and have each others back.

  68. W.... C....

I love this song. It hasn't lost it's power to move me to tears like it did the first time I heard it. Still get goosebumps.

  72. C.... ....

Powerful. Love love love this brilliant writing

  73. D.... P....

    GREAT SONG!!

  74. N.... L....

If you search on youtube "Understanding women Remix" (from 1993 by Bruce Forest) You'll find the said track with a strange synth sound at the beginning... It is in fact a re-pitched sample of the sound that open this song here - maybe from a mellotron, I don't really know... if someone knows off chance ?

    N.... L....

Because no other instruments are mentioned in the liner notes, I've always assumed that the chord at the beginning was real strings, arranged and conducted by Paul Buckmaster. It sounds like it was mixed through a phase shifter. I had never noticed that the recording was sampled at the intro of the "Understanding Women" remix. Listening to it now, I think you're right! Good spotting! You should ask Bruce about it - he himself has commented on the video.

    N.... L....

Thanks for the info ! Since I haven't that album physicaly in my hands I don't know a lot about the credits for it and I think I should have guess ! I mean when it comes to Elton John or any artist of this caliber you can assume that him, the musicians and producer will have fantastic results with inventiveness & also appropriate saving of means. Yet, I didn't think of phase shifting on strings but it seems logical : simple to operate (nowadays more than yesterday maybe) and the fact that this effect alone can have crazy result even on traditional acoustic sound ! I'm not surprised to find this kind of exciting production method on an Elton John album !

    N.... L....

Yeah by re-listening to it now I clearly hear that sweeping that is so characteristic of analogs phase shifters... This sound - so great !

  75. K.... D....

i've never been able to understand the fascination the british have with the native american culture

  76. S.... H....

He did this in Vegas last week it was amazing

  77. s.... ....

I read a book where the character moved to the prairies of Canada and meets native Americans and i couldn't help but think of this song, it's so beautiful and underrated

"Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before; I have it in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our Chiefs are killed; Looking Glass is dead, Ta Hool Hool Shute is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led on the young men is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are - perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my Chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." Chief Joseph - Thunder Traveling to the Loftier Mountain Heights - 1877

Back in '75-76 when I was junior in high school, I was with a friend one day at his family home. He told me that I needed to listen to this bad ass song by Elton John. At that time I had one Elton John album, and it was "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". He dropped "Madman Across The Water" on his turntable and it was an unforgettable moment hearing Indian Sunset for the first time. I can't listen to this song without remembering that first time I heard it. It's hard to say any one song is John's best as he has so many. But Indian Sunset is right up there, and the lyrics might be Taupin's most profound. Thanks for sharing, Ronnie!

    p.... ....

Wanted to pay homage to your words.   I could have written the same.   "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was the first album I bought.  And the next six were all "EJ's" .   I carry the spirit of Bernie writing and Elton's creative spirit always.

    p.... ....

    this stuff is sooooo moving
I remember the 1st time too!!

    p.... ....

Still to this day I get goosebumps up both arms. It is such a powerful song. I remember getting the album and playing this track a lot. A whole lot. I'm still the proud owner of my original copy on vinyl.

    p.... ....

It definitely send a powerful message

  82. T.... X....

Indeed, thanx for a lovely backdrop to this timeless tune; one that will resonate for the "first nation people" from not only North America but to all continents.   And will give eternal pause for reflection to many of us whose forefathers blazed a trail of discovery and pioneering efforts through these lands in the belief of what they were doing was righteous.

  83. L.... R....

Love this song. Bernie Taupin is a genious, and so thankful that he and Sir Elton were together to make music. None other can compare. Brilliant! No matter how many times I've listened to this over a lifetime it still touches my soul and brings tears to my eyes. I pray that Heaven is full of our Native Americans. I want them to have an all knowing comprehension of how much some of us truly love and treasure their lives. How it breaks my heart that they lost their homeland and way of life and their very lives. Disgraceful!

  84. K.... U....

Probably Elton's greatest song. Learned all the words before I was 7,

    K.... U....

    +Keith Uhlmann His BEST!

    K.... U....

Keith Uhlmann then Pac made it greater

  85. p.... ....

Breath taking even now 46 yrs after it was recorded. Tears, awe and joy that Elton John and Bernie Taupin managed to compose this haunting piece of music in a beautiful if only a token of recognition, of the extreme suffering of Native Americans in take over of their homeland. They fought bravely until nearly extinct. Too many soldiers and guns in the white mans' tribe.

    p.... ....

Guns, Germs and Steel. They didn't have a chance.

Your videos of Taupin/John's "stories" are absolutely poetic, in themselves. I am a big fan, named my son Daniel, quit piano lessons because my teacher wouldn't let me play Elton John songs. Lots of videos on here, but yours are, by far, the best. Thank You!

    E.... R....

You are so very welcome! Thanks for your kind words! So glad you enjoy the videos! It's never too late to learn to play piano! :-) When I was a teenager (long ago!) I taught myself to play piano by playing Elton John songs!
