Elton John - I've Seen The Saucers Lyrics

Tune in, wouldn't it be something
Rumours spreading into panic
I've seen movements in the clearing
Someone sent you something satanic

I have to leave you, radar's calling
Outside somebody landed
Crazy wavelengths leave you helpless
Oh don't forget me I'm so stranded

I wouldn't fool you but I've seen the saucers
So many times I'm almost in tune
Watching them flying in formation
Thinking how I could be so immune

I've seen them I've been there with them
I can tell you all you want to know
Something touched me and I was only sleeping
Wouldn't you, wouldn't you like to go

Stars climbing into their planets
Systems won, controlled from birth
Empty living on this highway
Can you see me mother earth

It's so endless whirling onwards
Wonder what's cooking at home tonight
Maybe if I promise not to say a word
They can get me back before the morning light

I absolutely loved this song when the album came out. Listened to it countless times with headset on in my room in high school. Haven’t heard it in decades, still love it! Thanks for posting it!

I've Seen The Saucers is the best song on the album. Bernie Taupin and Elton are song- smith extraordinaires. Thanks for posting!

  18. S.... C....

Funny hearing this song now, its strange to think that Caribou was considered an artistic disappointment, Gus Dudgeon the producer thought the whole album was crap, Elton was under huge pressure to deliver the album as he was contracted to a two album deal per year by Dick James (DJM) his then record company. The songs are not of the same standard as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, with the exception of the singles The Bitch is Back and Don't let the Sun go down on me, (Elton hated the original vocal for Don't let the Sun he was reputed to have slammed the headphones down in a temper screaming. "give it to Lulu"). It does however contain one other Elton and Bernie standard and thats the last track, Ticking. Ah the memories.

An analysis of this song from a musician/fan (me): This tune was written at a time when Elton displayed a fascination with unusual chord progressions, and the production team would go to the nth degree with various production ideas (if you listen, there are a lot of inventive sound effects in this song). Nowadays Elton and Bernie say this stuff was overproduced... but that's what made a lot of it personally interesting to me (his later writing suggests he got bored with pushing the envelope with chords and production, and this is something that I greatly miss). Davey, Dee and Nigel... those 3 had such chemistry together - instrumentally, and with their backing vox as well. Listen to the backing vocals on this song... smart, and tasteful. Things worth mentioning about this tune... it uses suspended chords and flat 5 chords in various places to create frequent, but brief tensions. There are also brief half step key-changing chords in places. In the chorus at the lyric "watching them".. that is an Ab min7... but when he sings "could be" later in the chorus it has come back around to be Ab dominant 7 (which is a major chord as opposed to the previous Ab minor). Minor to major changes and vice versa are used a lot in music... Beatles for example used it often... it creates mood shifts. But the way this winds it's way back around to a major is unusual... lots of chords have been going on and you don't subconsciously expect it. It feels like while the character is mulling his thoughts over... he's found resolve "thinking how I COULD BE <(major) so immune". The use of the suspended 2nd interval also tends to give a deep profound vibe to the ears... and that interval happens often in this song. Prog rockers (YES, UK, Zinc for example) have a lot of this in their music. I'd bet at the time Elton wrote this that he was proud of this song. It's got a lot of cool and inventive stuff in it. Ps: Also worth noting is Bernie's use of alliteration... frequent use of s and z sounds: rumorS Spreading into panic. i've Seen movement ... Someone Sent you Something Satanic... outSide Somebody landed... craZy wavelengthS leave you helpleSS , oh don't forget me.. i'm So Stranded. An early device of what was later used in the song: Sad Songs Say So Much

You forgot to mention His use of chromatic mediants from time to time. Creepy chord combos.

@D.T. Symms - Official Channel Elton had a nice ensamble. This album followed Goodbye Yellowbrick Road. He was at his peak during this time. This album produced a variety of sound. It included Beach Boys voices and Tower of Power horns. The finale, "Ticking." Listen to those lyrics

    J.... J....

Yeah, in '74, as a freshman in high school, I played this song as loud as I could, so I couldn't hear my mom scold me for not doing my homework. Funny, I didn't realize there was so much music behind the music. 😉

    J.... J....

Yes, and that is why this is my favorite song on the Caribou album. I was raised on Elton John. My favorite albums are Caribou and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I taught myself how to play the piano because of Elton John, specifically "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". Elton John is my piano hero, Bernie Taupin is my lyricist hero. I think Bernie is a genius.

Being a starseed I can relate to the the line "oh don't forget me I'm so stranded". Felt that way since childhood! Nobody writes this if they don't know what really is.

    All humans are Star Seeds!

  46. i.... ....

    Should have been a single.

    i.... ....

Seems to me it was composed to be a single, but, with just two songs released as singles (Bitche's Back and Don't Let The Sun), Elton was able to make this record a best seller. So, the label felt satisfied with the results and decided there was no reason to spend more money supporting airplay fo new songs. All ten songs from this album have potential to be singles. A strong album surely.

  47. S.... L....

this was the very first album I had purchased

  60. J.... R....

Saw Sir Elton in 1974(?) at Blackhawk stadium, Chicago. Put on one hell of a show!! Had the scoreboard(hung on cables) bouncing(of course, I was on THC, so....)

    J.... R....

I was there! 300 level, $25.00 tix. Opening act was a guy wearing huge Banana shoes. I was 15. got second hand buzz all night. "Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding" was the opening song!

    J.... R....

We had a couple Mezzanine seats right off the corner of the stage. About the same level as the top of the stage; great seats. I think they were about $35.00 each.

    J.... R....

Yeah, the fog machine was really working on that opening! I was talking about when he did "Saturday Night..", the place was ROCKING!!! I was afraid the hanging scoreboard was going to fall, it was moving!

  67. w.... ....

Elton is #1 to me.  His music has helped me cope during the roughest patches of my life since he appeared in the early 70's, and he's still going strong.

    w.... ....

His music is helping me right now, in the roughest time so far in my 30 year old life. It really is the time when you decide your side (Political).

  68. d.... ....

This is one of the best songs I've ever heard! My first concert was Elton John October 2nd 1975, the old Las Vegas Convention Center! Great concert, great memories! Elton's music from 70's era has proven to be timeless!

  69. b.... ....

Never quite knew how to feel about this album. It's kind of an awkward album in his golden age of songwriting.

    b.... ....

@beatles7798 Elton John (aka~ Reg Dwight) isn't the lyricist , he sings the lyrics that are written Bernie Taupin (aka~Bernard John Taupin). Its a cool story , just google thier names together and I think you will enjoy the story of a "Blues Piano player" and an "English farm boy" , making music since 1967.

    b.... ....

@steven frederick Huh? Are you implying that I didn't know that?? I used the word songwriting. That word doesn't necessarily mean that you write lyrics...

    b.... ....

@steven frederick By definition, "songwriter" can refer to one who writes music, lyrics, or both.

    b.... ....

@beatles7798  I wasn't attempting to belittle you at all.  I was simply passing on some information that thought was interesting.
Sorry, I didn't mean to get you upset.
I spent my early childhood listening to Elton, a lot of memories and now that i'm 57 i still love same old songs the best !   lol
      Again, please excuse me.

    b.... ....

@steven frederick Sorry, I didn't mean to sound angry or offended. I whole-heartedly agree about old songs :)

  72. D.... R....

In case y'all wonder why it's called Caribou, it was a Ranch where they recorded the album in Colorado.

  73. K.... D....

    pinball wizard wasnt on caribou??

    K.... D....

On the original album, no. It was on the reissue, when the ported it to CD, I think around 1995, with a few other songs.

    K.... D....

+Kenneth Hi! Pinball Wizard was a cover he did for The Who. It was recorded separately with The Who at there own studio 'Ramport Studios' for the soundtrack of Tommy. As Daisy Rothschild said, when Caribou was re-released and remastered in the 90's they added Pinball Wizard as 1 of 4 bonus tracks. The other songs being 'Sick City', 'Cold Highway' and 'Step Into Christmas'.

  74. J.... G....

    I love this song!

  75. B.... K....

I loved this song immediately when I bought this album at 16. I play on Neopets & name many of my pets after songs. There's 1 pet that lives on a giant spaceship, so now I have a new pet named I'veSeenTheSaucers. LOL!!

  76. b.... p....

i remember the Italien market i bought a bootleg tape of this album, i loved the song and i still do, now i am father with two kids... it's the music of my youth, like the songs from Supertamp, Queen, ELO and so on... great times, great music..

  78. .... ....

This elton Jonh is pretty good. I almost can't tell the difference between his and another music artist elton john's musical style

    .... ....

His music was very creative, very edgy then, as were Bernie Taupin's lyrics. They were like reading a short novel, taking a flight of fancy. Not at all like the Lion King stuff :P  Also he was very much into drugs then, so... pretty different person, as was his band. I don't think he was out of the closet yet either, nor was he a Sir, yet.

    .... ....

Nah this guy sucks. There can only be on Elton John. Accept no imitations!

    .... ....

+Daisy Rothschild It was during the making of this album he started on the drugs. After the masterpiece Captain Fantastic (and the less great Rock of the Westies) he came out as bisexual in 1976 and his career declined..

    .... ....

This comment made me laugh. Bloody Elton Jonh

    .... ....

It all ended in 1976 with the album Blue Moves...that was the end of Elton John.

  79. w.... ....

No one comes close to Elton.  Been a fan of his since "Your Song" in 1971, and he has been flawless ever since.  Truly one one of the greats.  He even made ":Lucy in the Sky" sound better!!

    w.... ....

    and Pinball Wizard...

    w.... ....

Elton WAS great up till Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. His early stuff was his best. He turned into a commercial, bubblegum maker after Caribou.

    w.... ....

remymarco; are you kidding? BlueMoves is bubblegum? get a grip man, whatchu smokin?

    w.... ....

Rock Of The Westies doesn't sound like bubblegum stuff to me. I think Remymarco is confused about the chronology of Elton's discography. Despite I love 80's records, them really sound less complex and polished than earlier ones.

  80. k.... r....

this is a great song!! great vocal...  thx

In the 70s, my sister and a friend were walking on a gravel road at night in NC. A whirring noise came out of the sky behind them and they turned around and looked up. There was a bright flash and then the flying vessels jetted away from them at a high rate of speed. My sis said it was if the UFOs had taken their picture with a bright flash, but the lights were like none she had ever seen. My sister is religious and not one to lie. Ever since I have believed that ppl have seen the saucers.

    k.... ....

+kgsved: Even a rudimentary grasp of the enormous distance and energy requirements to produce such a phenomenon should banish any such belief.

    k.... ....

Her religiosity disqualifies her from being taken seriously.
She probably also believes that Noahs Ark is a true story.

  85. D.... M....

Back in 1974 I was just a lad of 14.  Elton's Caribou Album was my 2nd or 3rd album.  I related to his introspection of growing up on the outside of the ' Cool Kids '.  It is truly remarkable how pop coulture can influence our lives and how we PERCEIVE OUR REALITY,  example being I witnessed with 5 others on Long Beach Island NJ the summer of 77 or 78.  It was just after the blockbuster movie ' CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE 3RD KIND ' was released.  90 deg. turn at high rate of speed and there were all kinds of pleasure boats out on the calm seas.  I am sure some of them viewed it even closer.  Faded out when it went over the horizon, speed was pretty fast.  I kind of wished to see one like in the movie, at a distance of course.  They can be dangerous if close because of radiation.  Warning be careful what you wish for.  Thanks Elton and Bernie T.

  86. D.... I....

worth-while revisiting---so, so many many memories...and the subject matter is in fashion again.

ok - i am down for dialogue not discourse.
in elton's own words he has stated he could

  98. V.... D....

that's what makes it HARDER hes given lyrics ...... now go make a hit song . That's harder to do in my opinion .

  99. l.... ....

I just listened to "Caribou" the other day. Even by today's standard's it's very well produced and recorded. I remember in the early 70s a lot of people got into higher end stereo systems because of the quality of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Caribou. I also have to give credit to The Eagles.
