Elton John - Emily Lyrics
The church bells ring out morning glory
When summer bends to the winter's rage
Emily walks through the cemetery
Passed a dog in an unmarked grave
The old girl hobbles, nylons sagging
I saw a lie in the mirror this morning
I heard a prophesy all around
And Emily they come and go
The shadows and the distant sounds
But Emily don't be afraid
When the weight of angels weighs you down
Emily prays to a faded hero
In a little frame clutched to her gown
Tonight's the night they let the ladder down
In a cage sits a gold canary
By a wicker chair and a rosewood loom
As a soul ascends abord the evening
Canary sings to an empty room
And Emily they come and go
The shadows and the distant sounds
But Emily don't be afraid
When the weight of angels weighs you down

Elton John Emily Comments

Emily the lonely woman with a canary for a friend. Bless her soul as she ascends the ladder. She was loyal to her loved ones visiting the cemetery and is now just another stone from a forgotten era. But her time is still remembered among us modern day fools as something similar to "the good old days". A time of loyalty and respect...and cordial social graces. Oh what a time it must have been.
RIP old bird.
"Emily" should be listened to by your whole family. U/A.
Best song on the album. Thanks for posting.
Who, sawchick or Mike's Emily? Why?
The best single songwriter of our time
The One and Made In England are my 2 favorite Elton John albums from the 1990's
I have this album
One of Elton's best!!!!
I love this album
Sync this song with the trailer for the kid who could fly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuYylr7REbE&ab_channel=JaquePaiva
The one was an album full of great songs. The drum machine throughout the album was annoying though
Who was she ? Elton has a mind blowing voice.
Classics that will not get tired even if you listen how many times!
OH I KNOW WHERE UR COMING FROM SUSAN I LOVE THE TUNE ALSO
I wish I knew a gal named Emily!

Perfect song
Awesome!!!😍
One of the best songs in the universe!
bittersweet song. one of my favorites from The One.
I have no idea how the sublime song like this was made in ten minutes or so.
2:12 I love that chord.
Good ear. You're right, it is great.
interesting composition thumbs up!
I am still so fond of this song. Actually, it is definitely one of my most favorite songs of all. And, on top of a few other singers. The words are so haunting. I had gone on a major bender in this album's release time. It was the year my life went on a steady downhill ride, mostly alcohol. I had gotten my own apartment, went to rehab, left my 2 gorgeous, precious sons to be raised by their Father. I could go on.
I am going on 4 1/2 years sober, so the memories this song evokes are so very happy and sad. Only this year have I finally been able to listen to it. My point: Elton John, in the category of pop/rock music, remains my very, very favorite of all time. I've been listening to him for 44 years. I'm 54.
"My point: Elton John, in the category of pop/rock music, remains my very, very favorite of all time. " Susan corona, I am so happy you feel that way. I had just noticed your comment and wanted to respond (from 10 months ago!)
So Glad you love Elton as much as I do. Be well and take care.
Congratulations on your sobriety! Once we've been able to limit self sabotaging behaviors, the world opens back up, the sun also rises, love re-enters through small cracks, and we can hear rhythm again.
It's easier to stay sober, than get sober.
Be good to you!
Congrats on your sobriety Susan goin on 8 years sober myself. It's amazing how Elton can make something so sad so beautiful.
This guy doesn't quit! Killer song...
sir Elton John the best worthy is he of praise... sing hosanna to sir Elton
The songwriters describe relationship pain. The songwriter would like us to see we're not alone. We can re-interpret our experience of pain. We can feel less alone and stronger. Along with others, we can break through pain and be even stronger than before. I bet others here have better thoughts than I do on this. It would be great to hear them.
the double effect... anyway, one of my brothers was alone years ago, and now I am listening... dimple headed nice guy, well it is radio and that is a dream... Ego...Igo...Ugo... respect is healing... thanks... :)
I have just heard this song for the very first time, and I learnt that Elton John is one of the worst song writers of his generation. This is awful.
What are we arguing about here? It's a question of taste. There is no accounting for taste obviously. If you don't like it then don't fucking listen to it. Wtf???
You know, some people change the radio from Bach to hard rock! It's none of my business. I happen to think it's beautiful. If you find it gut wrenching then don't listen to it. Simple. Voila!! God bless.
@m a j walsh I totally understand it is a question of taste, but when viscous little bitches like you comment 'fuck you' because I expressed my opinion, my taste, what am I supposed to say?
If you don't like my opinion, don't read it. There is no need for you to be so fucking rude.
you learnt????? Don't criticize Sir Elton with that grasp of English!!
You judge an artist by one song among many hundreds, including massive hits and numerous greatly admired tracks? Your declaration of him being one of the worst song writers of his generation is utterly ridiculous, presumably some sort of self-serving smart-arse trolling
I approve
wonderful song...i can't explain how much it makes me feel good
I wonder who Emily is!
