Elton John - Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy Lyrics

Captain Fantastic raised and regimented, hardly a hero
Just someone his mother might know
Very clearly a case for corn flakes and classics
"Two teas both with sugar please"
In the back of an alley

While little Dirt Cowboys turned brown in their saddles
Sweet chocolate biscuits and red rosy apples in summer
For it's hay make and "Hey mom, do the papers say anything good.
Are there chances in life for little Dirt Cowboys
Should I make my way out of my home in the woods"

Brown Dirt Cowboy, still green and growing
City slick Captain
Fantastic the feedback
The honey the hive could be holding
For there's weak winged young sparrows that starve in the winter
Broken young children on the wheels of the winners
And the sixty-eight summer festival wallflowers are thinning

For cheap easy meals and hardly a home on the range
Too hot for the band with a desperate desire for change
We've thrown in the towel too many times
Out for the count and when we're down
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
From the end of the world to your town

And all this talk of Jesus coming back to see us
Couldn't fool us
For we were spinning out our lines walking on the wire
Hand in hand went music and the rhyme
The Captain and the Kid stepping in the ring
From here on sonny sonny sonny, it's a long and lonely climb

I am 61 , considered by some to be old but for me this is the music of halcyon days which I would not change for any others.

This song mellows me out no matter what is going on around me.

  4. E.... K....

And when this song ends my mind immediately hears
    Snow
    Cement
    And ivory young towers

  5. S.... S....

back in the day, us men weren't allowed to listen to EJ because they said he was gay...I never cared...play it loud...

  6. s.... a....

throws you right back..... listen and enjoy

  7. R.... D....

Many consider this an indisputable classic including myself its one of my top 10 albums of all time ... some of these songs are timeless and since its release i have nothing but fond memories of my past...rock on

    G.... S....

Listen man I’m a music man through and through and we have all been blessed with musical talent that’s from the heavens for real so good so real so deep! Who comes to mind? Jerry Garcia bob dylan bob Marley James Taylor so many more BUT ELTON MOTHER FIN JOHN IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS A GENIUS A MUSICAL SHAMAN OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL!!!! Unbelievable absolutely unbelievable

    j.... ....

You are so right, musical genius without question. You have great insight and obviously can see true talent. Good luck in future endeavors with your music❤

  13. J.... K....

Without a doubt Elton's best album! Surely his most underrated! The Soundtrack of my Childhood...
    So sad Rocketman overlooked it.

  14. M.... F....

Sou fã desde meus doze anos e alguém está sendo, no mínimo, fora da lei

  15. C.... H....

In 1975 Elton John released Captain Fantastic & the Brown-Dirt cowboy. At the time it shipped at #1,

the album was #1 before it was even in stores. In my opinion it is a masterpiece. The album is auto biographical with the songs all about their song-writing partnership and how it came about.

The ROLLING STONE review wrote them a love letter. Praising the production values and the song writing quality. His career has lasted over 49 years now and people should hear his greatest work.

  16. D.... S....

One of my fave Elton and Bernie songs!!

    I am the Dirt Cowboy.

  17. D.... E....

I share your love but as a teen I could only hear what was played on the radio. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboys as a single gained little traction but I thought it was a "fantastic" song. But Yellow Brick Road album is still impossible to match, song for song these 40+ years on

  18. P.... C....

    Have a smoke.

  19. J.... S....

This album was an absolute work of art

  20. O.... M....

    😎😍🎷👍👍👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️

    Interesting Idea.

  22. m.... ....

and so begins the greatest album in the history of popular music

  23. e.... l....

Thank you much for your upload, Dixie Blue. =) Looked it up for a good friend back in MN. Craig Ballitch. He made it clear, it was his favorite of all albums, when he introduced me to it. I bought us each a copy of the original first press. Used, but in the best condition I could find. VG+. This album is Mint! Thanks again for posting! Don't be sad, Victoria. We're out there

  24. T.... K....

This album.....I don't have the words to describe how great it is. It takes a few listens, maybe five or so, but then it hits you...there are no easy hooks, no cheap tricks to make you fall in love with each songs, but there is genius in each tune. Probably the most rewarding listening of the mid seventies...put in the effort, realize the beauty.

  25. J.... W....

I was given this on 8-track as a birthday present when I was 10 (1976). Needless to say I have since updated my means of listening to this masterpiece.

  26. ..... G....

  44. u.... ....

I met Elton, Bernie and the whole band in Phoenix when they released "Yellow Brick Road" and was invited to the after concert party aboard the MCA Records Jet. Elton had a Grand Piano anchored to the inside of the jet. Very memorable!

  45. b.... ....

And all this talk of Jesus, comin back to see us...hmmm hmmm, couldn't fool us.

  46. M.... W....

Cool as hell still. I used to work in the Marquee Club in Soho.....Elton had Rocket Records across the street and would call in for a drink.....1973......a class act.

  47. C.... j....

had this with the poster on record, back in the day!

  48. D.... H....

Of a collection stretching passed 3000 now this is *Top 3* with "GBYBR" *Top 10* - Thank you Sir Elton!

  49. D.... W....

I feel you guys. Someone saved my life tonight was a big deal to a 13 year old with a mother going thru an ugly divorce. All I could think of was my girlfriend. As romance is at that age. Haha. But it did make me think of my mother going through hard times and me being a pubescent teen. I ended up being the man of house after that divorce. Talk about growing up quick. Not to mention the drugs.

  50. c.... s....

So fun this song too to sing!!! The beat fantastic - the whole album just rocks!!!!

  51. J.... D....

This song must be about Sir Elton and his husband. I wonder which one is the Brown Dirt Cowboy.

    J.... D....

Lighten up, I'm not homophobic, I'm just making fun of the name. Sort of like you did when you chose the "Deep Heat" for your nick-name. lol

  52. T.... C....

Wish I could go back to the time just for a short time .when I first bought this L.P..
    We smoked. We drank...guys.girls.had fun.we enjoyed.we loved..I am soon 63.
And today they have no idea..off a time with no email.no mobiles etc etc.
If I could go back for just a very short.i would be ready and happy to close my eyes for good.
    God bless you
    Elton lovers

    T.... C....

I'm 55 and would do anything to go back for just one day. My favorite album of all time. I cry every time I hear it,

  55. E.... P....

Elton at the top o’ the world!

  56. F.... ....

Surprising that manyndon’t realize that this song is about Elton (city slicker) and Bernie (country boy). Much of the album is about their early struggles.

  57. D.... B....

Elton and Bernie absolutely at the top of both of their games. Each song is a masterpiece!!! When this was released, a ten year old was given this by his mom and dad. So frickin' cool! Thank you "Parental Units" as I humorously call them now. :-)

CF and TBDC was Elton's first album with new bandmates. The album was listed as The Elton John Band, and the "new" band performed in front of 80,000 people on June 21, 1975 at Wembley Stadium in England with The Eagles and Joe Walsh also performing. On June 7, 1975, the album became the first in Billboard album chart history to debut at #1. It stayed there for 7 non consecutive weeks.

  64. R.... R....

Thank you Elton, I love this album more today than when i first bought it in "75"! Stay with us awhile longer Elton, wont you?

  70. P.... P....

my humble opinion rates this album as his all time masterpiece. the zenith of the partnership with Bernie Taupin ... and of course with a dedicated band that was the cream on the cake.
Have the album in my collection with the posters inside the album sleeve.
These were the days when concert tom toms to a drum kit were used in the recording studios.
    Cheers Dixie.

Was in high school when my surfer friend brought this record over and I put aside my Dylan and Canned Heat and let her play it. Loved it. Playing this tonight as I wonder whatever happened to my friend. Apple, are you out there?

My brother gave this to me on 8 track. I was 12 years old. Took a bus from Arkansas to Washington state for a summer vacation. He sold me an 8 track player and I listened to this a million times with some huge Pioneer headphones. That was the best summer, ever.

  76. n.... ....

    thank you!

  77. R.... J....

Victoria, you will be pleased to know that most music critics give Captain Fantastic a star rating and (next to Goodye Yellow Brick Road) consider this his finest work. There isn't a weak track on the album and not surprisingly it debuted at number at the top of the US Album charts the week it was released. Unheard of by any artist at the time (1975). I remember turning 15 and receiving the record (and packaging that went with vinyl in those days that made you feel like you were receiving a Christmas gift!).

  78. I.... B....

This album is a stupendous work of art, his and Bernie's best. Perfection. We should all wish for vinyl again, but everything has changed so much. People aren't in touch with real music these days. Kinda makes me feel like the days of the Wild West are slipping out of sight and gone with the People. Worth a ride to the hills, find a piece of the Lost again. Aye, Cap'n.

  79. q.... ....

The last truly great Elton John album. In my top 10 fave albums of all time.

  80. J.... J....

Elton and Bernie..KINGS ..Can anyone match them these days??? I DON'T THINK SO!!!! May your music and lyrics live and stay forever with us..

  81. p.... b....

My older sister is a huge EJ fan, and during the period when he broke she was an even bigger fan. She bought this album for me to expose me to his music. I was about 11. She's a good sister.

  82. D.... L....

Absolutely a masterpiece of an album!

  83. T.... D....

If i remember correctly, this is the first album ever to enter the album charts at #1.

    T.... D....

One of the very best Elton John albums, ahhhh the freedom of the late 70s

  84. S.... L....

Those days when you were 13 years old and bought some new records, and wore the needle off listening to them through those big analog padded headphones with the curly cord. Thanks for putting this up, a thing of beauty from the days of AM radio and the AOR FM format.....was a good time to be a kid.

    S.... L....

I actually won most of my classic rock LPs at the Lucky Leo's record stand on the Seaside Heights boardwalk.
The one next to the Sand Tropez gift shop.

  85. D.... S....

Not only is this a classic album, the art work on the gatefold cover is simply extraordinary-never seen anything like it, before or since.

  86. L.... F....

    best LP ever from EJ

  87. D.... B....

The Best Elton John album, period.

  88. D.... P....

    good stuff,dig it

  89. K.... Z....

This may be Elton John's best album but it's definitely not his last greatest. I enjoy his stuff from this (aside from Victim Of Love) on to Jump Up!, which is my favorite 80's Elton John record. Elton John truly returned to form again with Songs From The West Coast up to Captain And The Kid, which was a trilogy of greatness in my book. I did also enjoy The One (which was a semi comeback), Made In England, and The Big Picture but not like the latter three. But this easily Elton's best with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in close second. Everything before that to me is just okay but showed promise with the exception of Madman Across The Water which is Elton John's early masterpiece.

    K.... Z....

Im not sure if EJ did those songs, where they released in the UK with those Titles? I know many of the Beatles Albums were different here in the US; but i dont think they change the name of the Songs??

  90. c.... t....

    you bet

  91. c.... t....

    the best of my days

  92. M.... A....

played this album so much, parents know it by heart lol
