Elliott Smith - Punch And Judy Lyrics
A wallflower Punch talks to Judy
In a crowded corner where anybody can listen in
They don't read page to page, or speak easy
Now they're gonna go say the words
In the wrong order again
Through all the sidewalk scenes they used to be a part of one time
Now everybody just stares and whispers
Driving around, up and down Division Street
I used to like it here
It just burns me out to remember
Can't you ever treat anyone nice?
Think I'm gonna make the same mistake twice?
They draw the curtain
Pretty lucky if they get any kind of response at all
Can't you ever treat anyone nice?
Think I'm gonna make the same mistake twice?
Gonna make the same mistake twice

Elliott Smith Punch And Judy Comments
Will always be coming back to this one.
This is a good mix. Sometimes this music is life saving.
God this song has grown on me exponentially over the past couple of days. Elliott’s music has an uncanny ability to do that
Very cool
Still wonder how elliott can make a simple guitar chord be very beautiful simphony 🎶
A wallflower punch talks to Judy
In a crowded corner where anybody can listen in
But they don't read page to page or speak easy
Now they're gonna go say the words
In the wrong order again
They walk in a circle
Through all the sidewalk scenes they used to be apart of one time
Now everybody just stares and whispers
Driving around up and down division street
I used to like it here
It just bums me out to remember
Can't you ever treat anyone nice?
I think I'm gonna make the same mistake twice
They draw the curtain
Wait for a call
Pretty lucky if they get any kind of response at all
Can't you ever treat anyone nice?
I think I'm gonna make the same mistake twice
I'm gonna make the same mistake twice

It's actually easier if you play it in Standard D (DCGFAD) as Elliott did. G - Bm - A - Em - A, etc. The chorus is then Em - Emaj7 - A7sus4 - A7 - C
@Jumbo M For sure... If you're playing on a piano or with a full band though you'll do better to know the actual chords enharmonically
Cuz Dud you’re right and I love you
Elliott makes everything okay.
Fell in love with this song recently.
I'm 16, I've listened to this man for 3 days now, this is the only album of his I've heard and already I can tell he's one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His music is so harrowing and melancholic no matter how upbeat the chord progression, an absolute visionary. Even if I can't relate to most of his material I naturally draw my own personal meaning to connect with him, wish I could've seen him live. Rest in piece you musical genius Elliot.
Well put, harrowing.
What an elegant and self-aware synopsis! You're doing something right, friend <3
I’ve come to realize it’s because he’s writing ‘upbeat’ beautiful music as a reaction to horrible terrible feelings. Beautiful pop relief to feelings of terror.
FUCK YOU kiddo
I apologize.

i hear this song in my head when i'm walking alone and wanting to die
dutchbagel OH MY GOD SOMEONE ELSE UNDERSTANDS HOLY SHIT XDDDD
IT'S SO UPSETTING JUST WALKING AROUND AND HEARING IT ON REPEAT
...this is indeed a phenomenon.
EVERY time I start reminiscing about better times and walking around the city I've lived in my entire life. Elliott's lyrics even better explain the scenes going through my head.
same, live right near Division Ave and it pops in every time
Elliott had a way of interpreting feelings in ways that words alone can't explain.
I hear this in my head every time I'm sad too
beautiful.
i want to throw it all away to this song..
I love this song so much, like many of Elliott Smith's songs.
Miss u Elliot
