I only wish I got into Elliott when he was around...I can’t believe I somehow missed this amazing music when he was around and performing...
I was into Nirvana and other Alternative/new wave music back in the mid-late 90s and regret not opening my ears more....
This song has literally been played a 1000 times in my song list lately...
And to think Elliott thought of this song as a throwaway...

My experience mirrors yours exactly - I was very into the same kind of music in the mid to late 90s and for the life of me don't know how he got past me. I literally hadn't heard of him until just this past June. Even now a few months later, I am still really enjoying hearing some of his stuff for the first time. In a current time where there is no good music coming out anymore, it's been an unbelievable God send to have his music as "new" to listen to for me.

Elliott Smith apparently didn't want to sing this song because he thought it sounded like the Eagles. Apparently, ES had a similar music taste to The Dude.

Beautiful. Just learned how to strum this out on guitar and I really enjoy singing it. Reminds me of being 15 and watching the boy I adored watch the girl he adored. Sigh.

It's crazy how every single song Elliott ever wrote was so incredible. I've never felt such a strong connection to any other musician and their music. He was truly one of a kind.

This song's pathos, but mostly its brilliant melody, and all its voicings, blow me away.

Elliott Smith was a musical genius. I found him in 2008 and listened to him consistently over the years. His music definitely had a positive influence in my life during rough times.

Lovely song, but I prefer the Mary Lou Lord version (w/ Elliott on guitar). Something about the accordion + backing vocals just doesn't click here. Excluding this from the A-side of Either/Or was a wise decision.

Elliott Smith is one of the best things that ever happened to me.

One of the best examples I ever heard when you are trying to relate Elliot's amazing talent and genius is this:

He is all four Beatles.. In one person.

The most gifted lyric and songwriter I have ever come across performing the most beautiful, honest and complex music I have ever heard. I am often genuinely speechless.

Sometimes when I am listening to him I am moved to near tears.. Not for any particular reason I can identify other than that his passing was a tragedy. An irreplaceable loss for music, for everything. In the 15 years since his passing I have not heard one note of music that produces the same feelings. The human race is less than with Elliott gone.

Pinhead Larry he’s honestly the best and worst thing that ever happened to me outside of the relationships between my nuclear blood relatives and I. He’s both the greatest love and admiration ive felt, the greatest influence and inspiration artistically, as well as an abusive relationship, neglectful lover, abandoning father, and bad-influence older brother rolled into one, and I wouldn’t have him any other way, because without Elliott’s influence I wouldn’t come close to resembling the person I am today, and though I live with some regrets and transgressions I’m not proud of, there’s no other other of could’ve taken to be right where I am today, and today, I am happy with where that is and who I am.

Ive been listening to this a lot, never heard it before, but the one with your vocals is something Im glad I found as its sung just as beautifully as this version here, its remarkable how different and yet the same a song can sound depending on who's singing it.

I was actually on here for your videos, Mary Lou. You were on constant rotation in my college apartment back in 1999. I was just reminiscing while singing along to Helsinki and other faves <3 I love the version of this with you on vocals as well. I got to see Elliott back in 2001- I wish you had been performing also. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend and the loss to the world. I hope you're doing really well and still rocking out. xo

Elliott Smith was on a completely different level than Nick Drake.

I thought you wrote just Drake at first, and I was pretty confused and shocked. And then for a moment I imagined it, but that only confused me more. Could you image ES singing the chorus in a Drake song / rap? It’s not very pleasant. But with Nick Drake, yes I could imagine it, and their voices together would be incredible. ES’s paper-thin spidery vocals with that subtle complexity alongside ND’s deeper vocals, the fluidity of his voice, it would be really great (understatement). [I feel like I read ES’s voice described that way in an article, but who knows, maybe it’s something sappy I myself came up with; probably the former as I’m not creative enough.] I would have loved to hear Elliott cover a Neil Young song.

I understand the stigma that Kurt wasn't the best musician (he definitely wasn't the greatest guitar player) - however, I think what Kurt lacked in technical prowess, he more than made up for in his writing of vocal melodies, musical arrangements, Innovative approach to noise in songs, and his lyrics - Elliott was 150% a more technically capable player - But I think their ear for melody, emotion, lyrics, and arrangement were quite similar. If I could think of two songs that have a similar "feel" to them, it would be "Between The Bars", and "Dumb". I know there's a musical difference, but they evoke very similar feelings...I think it would have been interesting to see what they could do together - might have been the greatest music, might have been stupid. So much love and respect for Elliott, and Kurt - I don't mean any disrespect to anyone else commenting here btw, just my opinion. 🙌🏻

the acoustic songs Kurt was working on or the acoustic versions of nirvana songs transfer a very similar feeling to the songs of Elliott Smith, at least to me.  
Of course it's a completely different style, but it would be a very magical mix, for sure.
