Elliott Smith - Going Nowhere Lyrics

He waved hello silent like a mime
We met, there's no changing my mind
I won't walk the stairs with you tonight
Going nowhere
The clock moved a quarter of a turn
The time it took a cigarette to burn
She said you got a lot of things to learn
Going nowhere

Saw you move a certain way
Missed you a lot
Return to this abandoned place
Should a been forgot
Echoes drown the conversation out
Echoes that only seem to bring about
A silent expression
Things you may allow
Going nowhere

The steps made a pattern
I'd never seen
I felt like a kid of six or seventeen
I was off in some empty day dream
Going nowhere
It's dead and gone matter of fact
Maybe for the best
Said some things you can't take back
Honestly i guess

The old records
Sitting on the floor
The ones i can't
Put on anymore
He walked over to her like before
Going nowhere
Going nowhere
Going nowhere

  7. kira sussane

This song is beautiful and makes me cry 😢😢

  8. tommaso principi

this song is just perfect. It's so sad, so melancholic, but so sweet. It's that kind of sweet, nostalgic sadness that we like for some reason

    ValveSpecial

It may have the best verse I’ve ever heard in a song. Shame the chorus isn’t of the same quality - it seems a bit phoned in by Elliott’s standards.

  9. Sara Mantilaro

everytime I think i've heard the best of him, WHAM. Goddamnit elliott, would you just give me a little break?

Elliott doesn't probably help a lot to get over depression, but it does really make you start taking its hand and walking together. Maybe that's the way to go with this shit.

  13. Matthaios Spanoulis

I feel human listening to this.

  16. theblackhaze

Elliott is my favourite musician ever. But, my god, if ever a song sounded like suicide it's this. Doesn't stop it being outstanding though.

  19. Lucy Vowles

This is so beautiful, I don't suppose anyone has chords?

  20. John Smith

the loneliness of the soul and its appalling self-conscientiousness is horrible and over powering

  21. James Monahan

dont suppress being sad it leads to depression

    onemorebrando

sadness does not lead to depression.  not averting your eyes does.

    Jon Reed

    @onemorebrando holy shit...dat wuz nice

    onemorebrando

    thanks, Jon Reed.

    MrJMont21

+onemorebrando averting your eyes attaches you evermore to the troubling experience. Suppressing sadness does lead to depression. Once we are triggered and sadness is released, depression is no more.

    patatedouce38

    Repressed anger leads to depression.

  22. max bonds

i know elliott isn't for everyone,  but i can't imagine anyone being moved in the direction of unliking or whatever the e-terminology is for thumbs downing this song.

    TravellingShoes

It's a mystery. He's the most genuine, honest, raw, heart felt and unpretentious songwriter i've ever heard. It might not be your style but how can you fault the guys passion and beauty?

  23. Fetish of Death

I love you Elliott. And I miss you so fucking much

    Daniel Green

@***** Yes, allegedly killed him self. Look it up.

  24. Angela Crow

  30. Lorenzo Di Folco

    I'm crying.

  31. HarryHayesMusic

likewise man, my brother lent me 'XO' when i was about 13/14, and i'll admit - i wasn't totally into it initially but when i did get into it properly it changed how i looked at everything musically. i started tuning my guitar like elliott and i learnt a fuck load of his songs haha. yeah man, i think i might have seen that too - he was a really interesting guy, i love seeing interviews with him and live footage. and i doubt there ever will be, nobody can touch his lyrics or songwriting!

  32. weenpeen6

Same here! Elliott completely changed the way I heard, played, and wrote music. I always remember an interview of his where he talked about how he writes music. He said that he's fascinated with chords. He loves to play chords and see what different notes he could play within them. That always stuck with me. That, and when he said that he writes music for himself. He writes what sounds good to him, and if other people also like it then awesome. haha There's never been another like him.

  33. HarryHayesMusic

totally agree man, good to have 'met' somebody with the same views! haha. he's my absolute hero, influenced my music to such an extent you can always hear a little of him in all my stuff haha.

  34. weenpeen6

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I had a solid 2-3 years where I literally listened to just about nothing but Elliott. I can listen to his entire catalog (bootlegs and all) and never skip a track. One of (if not THE) best songwriter of all time.

  35. HarryHayesMusic

it happened to me as well, i got all his albums and had big phases with all of them. it's impossible to pick a favourite album or track they're all perfect. still amazes me how even all his unreleased stuff is better than a lot of artist's official back catalogue haha

  36. momovomo

@sonne monde same thing here. And this music never gets old. It's strange.

  37. ANGRYEEL

As real as it gets. Great song.

  38. Ultraviolentjunglist

Everybody with a soul is in love with Elliott Smith :)

  39. onemorebrando

Wish this cat would've stuck around. He was special.
