Elliott Smith - Don't Go Down Lyrics

I met a girl, a snowball in hell
She was hard and as cracked as the Liberty Bell
I got her to come on and move in with me
And I said I'd find a better place we could spend eternity
Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby, stay
Her mama called me a thief
And her dad called himself commander-in-chief
I fought him off with my love
But I knew the sense of worthlessness she'd have to rise above
Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby, stay
Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby, stay
She had a dream, woke up in shock
She had seen her own body outlined in chalk
I split the scene, the globe had been spun
And her ghost leaned down to kiss me with a message from the sun
Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby, stay
Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby stay
Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby, stay
Stay

Elliott Smith Don't Go Down Comments
  1. A.... T....

This song is sonically crushing. The guitars on this record are ridiculous. The mix is the work of a madman.

  2. I.... b....

If I die I'll listen to this in my second life pure genius

Plus you are Polish, so you will definitely go on to a divine place after you leave here. Elliott Smith plays softly in the background through baby Bose speakers nobody can find but hear. Some days he shows up to play live.
If we dream it big, it could manifest, right? Lol, just being silly, I like shouting out to other Poles.

  6. P.... H....

Always got a Marc Bolan T-Rex vibe off this one.

    Peter Hughes lead guitar

    P.... H....

Ya exactly its got that swagger to it

  7. J.... A....

I wonder what Elliott Smith could have made if his creativity was not consumed with his emotions?

    J.... A....

Joshua Anderson His emotions make the music. The music IS his emotions.

  8. P.... H....

Who says you can't change from an A7 to Am;)

    P.... H....

well V chords are always substituted for the ii m chord so I don't see why you couldn't do it the other way around. only difference between the chords is a b3

    P.... H....

thats why elliot smith is an excellent artist. he keeps it interesting

The second to the last stanze is beautiful, but I can't get a grasp on it. Is he saying she killed herself? Is he saying he left her?

    M.... L....

Couldn't really say. Both of those ideas are reasonable to me. The lyrics could also mean an emotional death of some kind, like she gave up on herself, the relationship. The lyrics do seem to convey a suicidal notion. It's interesting to consider. I don't like to make assumptions.

    M.... L....

I know this guy was a song writing machine but I will never even pretend to begin to understand what place he is coming from in some of his songs. Sometimes his heart is clearly on his sleeve and he is urgent enough to not mince words and just lays it out there.
But then there are songs like this one. Or is it just merely some songs are persona for him, and others are just story-telling and fantasy and he is using his amazing creative ability?
(I guess I was being nosy and wondering who the chick was with this song and wow, maybe someone could have written a memoir?)

    M.... L....

Is this song about him, like he is the girl in this scenario?

    Don't go down,
    Don't go down...
    Stay with me,
    Baby stay.

A most remarkable song, a most remarkable album. Pure poetry. Nothing less.

    Totally agree
