Elliott Smith - Clementine Lyrics
They're waking you up to close the bar
The street's wet, you can tell by the sound of the cars
The bartender's singing "Clementine"
While he's turning around the "Open" sign
"Dreadful sorry, Clementine"
It seems a long time gone
Maybe the whole thing's wrong
What if she thinks so but just didn't say so?
You drank yourself into slow-mo
Made an angel in the snow
You did anything to pass the time
And keep that song out of your mind
"Oh my darling
Oh my darling
Oh my darling Clementine

Elliott Smith Clementine Comments
Maybe his best song
Pure musical and lyrical genius. Take your seat above Dylan and Beatles, sir.
Keep moving forward. Sorry you're gone, Elliot.
What if she thinks so but just didn't say so?
You drank yourself into slo-mo
Made an angel in the snow
Anything to pass the time
And keep that song out of yr mind
Oh my darling
Oh my darling
Oh my darling clementine
Dreadful sorry clementine
holy fk me, lyrics are amazing here
I just noticed this now even though I'm years late maybe someone can see this. There are quotes around the lines "Dreadful sorry Clementine" and "Oh my darling(x3) Clementine". Are these the lyrics that the "bartender" is singing inside this song? Because if so then this is the most genius song ever made, as if you are listening to two songs at once but within the same song. This song tells a story as you listen to what the "bartender" is singing. If this is true then this is my favorite song of all time because of this.
okay @Abas Hamzi
rubiks 1148 it’s the bartender singing an old traditional folk song
This is the song I listen to when I feel like I'm losing a sense of myself.
This tune brings me back to a grim part of my life. And reminds me of my first love. hope life is well for you wherever you are
Anthony Cervantes same for me, used to listen to this album over and over while going through deep serious addiction, just glad I’m clean now. This music really helped me cope, thank you so much Elliott.
Same but not
I'm gonna sing this as a lullaby to my baby one day
I would probubly do that too.
perfect
Genius. Ever tried to play this? Wonderfully bizarre tuning :)
Tuned down a full key.
Open G I believe which is one of the most common open tunings. It sounds v cool
@drbooks open g??? Is that anything like drop d?? I cant figure this song out!!! Its driven m crazy!!!
Yup. I’ve been playing guitar for 21 years, and every attempt I’ve made to play an Elliot Smith song required the most insane tuning...
sincere.
A natural
still the best, always will be the best. My hero
the street's wet, you can tell by the sound of the cars.
thanks for bringing that line to my attention
Dustin Mulligan oh yes, those lines paint a cozy picture don't they.
Dustin Mulligan I'm glad someone else feels this way. Elliott was meticulous with his lyricism and it shows
jon fitzmaurice ohh. I thought it was “the street’s what you can tell by the sound of the cars.” So if you’re really drunk and can’t see straight, you can tell where you are based on how busy the traffic is. Lol.
Composing is so difficult after listening to elliott
Théophile Phanoune I believe he is saying that after you listen to Elliot you kind of realize how amazing and perfect he is in terms of putting songs together so basically you realize that everything you write is shit compared to what he writes basically you realizie you fucking suck
Definitely, but... just let him inspire you brother.
*different
He helps a lot. Thank you, Elliott.
@romeopalote Man, composing is pretty difficult by itself... Fascinated of all those guys who bring on fine words with great chords. Like Robin Pecknold. Wanna write something but can't figure out how. So much chords that wanna be played.
If I could bring any 2 artist back into this world, it will be Elliott Smith and Jim Croce. Amazing talent lost way too soon.
(IDK Jackson C. Frank was pretty good too)
Still amazes me how undiscovered this man still is...
Brian Matthew but he was super famous, I'd say one of the most famous of his genre to be out there
TheFrankpet boi Elliott played at the fucking Oscars
Elliott was a gift to us
Dustin Mulligan Lennon was arguably the most famous person ever. Elliott Smith definitely did not want anything like that. Elliott smith still gets quite a bit of radio play. I think he did pretty good for himself and his legacy.
@tim chiavarini I haven't heard Elliot Smith on xm radio once in the 3 yrs I've had it
Looking back after the ending of a ten year relationship, Elliott Smith's songwriting is so fucking deep and way too accurate.
Just a spooky fucking song.
Amazing guitarist.
its really good
This, among so many of Mr. Smith's tracks, is redolent with utter brilliance.
(ohh) Oh my darling
(ohh) Oh my darling
Oh my darling, Clementine.
That part always has me singing.
