Elliott Smith - A Fond Farewell Lyrics
The Litebrite's now black and white
'Cos you took apart a picture that wasn't right
Pitch burning on a shining sheet
The only maker that you want to meet
A dying man in a living room
Who'll take you out in the open door
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
A fond farewell to a friend
He said really I just want to dance
Good and evil match perfect, it's a great romance
And I can deal with some psychic pain
Veins full of disappearing ink
Vomiting in your kitchen sink
Disconnecting from the missing link
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
I'ts just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
A fond farewell to a friend
I see you're leaving me
And taking up with the enemy
The cold comfort of the in-between
A little less than a human being
A little less than a happy high
A little less than a suicide
The only things that you really tried
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
A fond farewell to a friend
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend

RIP to dear E. Smith.
Really wish all elliott smith songs had comments disabled. misery loves company its well understood at this point catch up with the silence that co wrote these brilliant songs.
I love you Elliot ..a magical human indeed
A farewell to my friend: I love you harrison. I hope you are somewhere, in peace and if there’s nothing at least there’s not pain. everything about you is me too. I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss you so bad. You were with me for so long but we’re only 24, I might have a long time to go on without you here and I’m praying I can do it. there isn’t a day that goes by I don’t see your big brown eyes resurrected from my grey matter. never fade. never die.
Thanks Elliot
I was lucky enough to see Elliot play in May, 2000 at Metro in Chicago. It was totally by random chance,
I couldn’t ever repay my girlfriend at the time for introducing me to a legend who left us way too soon.

Most of Elliott Smith's songs are sad, but i usually "get over them" over time, but this one cuts deep man
my friend sang this in choir today and it hit so hard
“Couldn’t get things right”
once you become a heroin addict, this song makes perfect sense...
thank you, clarinha
Makes " vomiting in a kitchen sink" sound beautiful. Of course he does.
The guitar in this song reminds me of the scene in Sling Blade when he tells the story about the dying baby
You saved me from Suicide, Elliott
And now I have a beautiful daughter named Eden.
always with the happy full major chord ending
Elliott Smith brought me here..
Listening to good music in a cubicle at work makes me want to just throw it all away because this shit doesnt matter.
Remember kids dont stab yourself in the chest or your cool music will get fucked out in coffee shops for anxiety hipsters and there will be nothing that you can do about it

I'm leaving this link to an oral history of elliott smith's career. It's a great piece and it focuses on his music, his personality, his method of composing and recording rather than his personal misadventures.
Take your time cause it probably will require more than a hour for reading it...
My aunt showed me elliot smith when I was 13. Glad I still listened.
This is the definition of soul
murdered by his south of border 'girlfriend'.....Portland Oregon, city of cucked Whites....self hating Europeans.....
Sad that I'm late to Elliot Smith's music. This would've sounded amazing back then ...
ELLIOT NEVER DIES
That intro is allways making me feel like a rhcp is coming
the cold comfort of the inbetween
Anthony Starkovski will always be my brother love and miss you
"A dying man in a living room" is a great line.
RIP Homie
Elliott is/was my nephew. Did you know he played all the instruments, engineered all the tracks, and mixed this entire album, and was mere weeks from releasing it mere weeks before his death? I miss hm every day and his music will resonate through time, as it contains such deep connections to us all.
Price Berryman Price, how are you doing?
I'm not a big fan of the "X sent me here" comments but Frank Ocean sent me here, and if you get curious I encourage you to give him a listen, start with Seigfried, the song that sent me here.
sucked shit
My late friend Dani and I used to dissect these lyrics every time we relapsed and always concluded, as I still maintain, that it’s about someone catching you lapsing or relapsing and you attempting to explain to them the full scope of how and why, and that it’s not something they need to think twice about, but when she passed away, it morphed into a way to communicate the debilitating effects that loss had on me, and their impermanence
Excellent song about Portland's fall, from a great city, to a 3rd world shithole......brainwashed commies everywhere that hate America.....we should deport them to red china.....
simplemente un genio.
To the people who disliked the video: Is it the video, or the reason that brought you here
Elliott Smith, you may have passed way... But your music saves people.. It saved me from suicide and depression.
Sometimes It’s good to hear other souls have the same feelings ...
One of his best!
Elliott Smith literally saved my life, I can’t help you. But today isn’t a good day to die.
how do i save this into my brain
I lost my virginity to this banger. Great memories.
As you bid your virginity a fond farewell
I saw elliot in LA. He was amazing. He played lead, guitar and drums,,,,, I found out he had passed on NPR.. so very sad
the end of this song, the part where’s humming, so mesmerizing...it gave me the chills
Frank Ocean quotes from this tune in "Seigfried."
Al final mueren los dos 🖤
a little less than a human bean
The suicidal beatle
This hits close to home.
Cheers to the people who are trying to get by today.
Frank Ocean brought me here
Did he cover this?
niles payne he references this on his song called “seigfried”
I firmly believe Elliot was the greatest songwriter since Lennon/McCartney. Unreal talent/creativity
You left out Leonard Cohen
Adam Weller lol just an opinion, I also left out my favorite artist of all time, John frusciante. Cohen didn't connect with me as much as the 4 people I mentioned. Cheers 😊
Mm Mmm "well that's like, uh, your opinion. Man"
But an opinion I sort of agree with lol 😊
Mm Mmm awesome man. Elliot was a genius. A genius most people don't even get the chance to hear. :/
I got roman candle on as I type 16 years I've been on your case Mr man
a little less than a happy high
a little less than a suicide
the only things that you really tried...
Nice Picture.
Told me whiskey works better than beer
Good and evil match perfect it's a great romance
Frank Ocean has good taste.
Чарівно.
A friend of mine covered Waltz #2, it's on my channel.
Let me know what you think!
A feeling like all been said, all been done. Just a fond farewell to a friend.
A little less then a suicide
Amigo, se, pelo menos por uma vez, eu coloquei um sorriso no seu rosto, saiba que minha vida não foi vã (deixa essa pro Julinho). This is just a fond farewell...

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Frank
This song still elicits some magic as the first time heard
sabreena carolina cunningham this always makes me worry about you
Emersson Cane brought me here
“Fond Farewell” was released almost a year to the day after his apparent suicide, this was the song that wrecked me
15 years ago today we lost him
Rip Mr Smith
Thanks frank ocean
Anyone reading this who is struggling with drug addiction. You can beat it, I was a heroin addict for 12 years and completely convinced I would die as one but I am sober now. Keep fighting.
Good on ya.
Jonathan Robertson still sober?
@Jmpsthrufyre * 665 years ago chances are he has...considering heroin's startlingly high recidivism rate. Ive been in recovery for a few years after nearly two decades of heroin addiction and I'm not proud to admit I have relapsed, more times than I care to admit; the difference being this time I got my ass up off the floor and tried even harder. It doesn't have to be but relapse is usually a part of recovery, especially with an addiction as insidious and life fucking as opioid addiction.
@PoolShark40 my baby likes to shoot pool, I like lyin naked in my bedroom.
@PoolShark40 i feel ya man. I'm on buprenorphine maintenance but I've relapsed so many times on harder shit it's not funny. It's really hard for me to let go of the routine of needing an outside chemical be "happy." My DOC's are IV cocaine and either oxycodone, oxymorphone, or hydromorphone in the same shot. Obviously this is impossible to do without completely losing my soul and everybody important in my life.
I have much greater self control than I used to I'm still chasing that mind state. I know to never be overconfident about my self control when it comes to that shit. I'll come up with every excuse to use. You better believe I'm taking something if there's any kind of dopaminergic, gabanergic, or opioid activity. I can't shake the positive correlation my brain makes when discovering a drug releases too much dopamine. I'm stuck trying to fill the void left by drugs by taking other drugs which just keeps me in the same vicious cycle.
It's almost unfair how much talent this human possesed.
Cameron Sharples agreed. He was so damn talented it’s unreal
it sucks (for me) but bipolars can really understand borderlines better than anyone They're basically just octo-polar on quadra-speed They aren't understood by any but 1 percent of humanity. Even their parents struggle usually.
They need the emotional equivalent of a catcher's mitt if you get my drift; Few of those are round who aren't taken.
I found Elliot https://youtu.be/4V0PnIz2OX0
Frankie boy <3
Memories.. Farewell to my old friend..
You can hear him at 3:55 say "You Get The Verse?" I love little shit like that!
Damn, I could barely make it out. You must have some top headphones?
@Kreutz Man I've listened this song for years and like awhile back I heard it man! It was Awesome! So neat ya know.
Fuck, this comment section is depressing. You guys wanna party? 😏
Bless you Elliott Smith 😊😉
You wrote great music rip
Elliotbyou
Thanks to Frank Ocean for showing so many people this song wow
vomiting in the kitchen sink. I love this shit but can't listen to it with anyone else cause everything he does is so dark.
EastEnders greatest exits brought me here
Happy Birthday
My bestfriend's mother passed away June 17, 2018. We just graduated highschool. Drugs are evil, and Tracey will always be remembered as the women whom loved everyone no matter how much they judged her. We love you mama, I hope you are growing the biggest most beautiful garden in heaven.
The man
The most beautiful part of Elliot is the amount of new fans who discover his music everyday and the way he grabs their emotions. We are all in this world trying to be understood and trying to just get by. His music gives me a sense of peace and that feeling of everything is going to be okay and that's what brings me back time and time again.
Rick and Morty are chocked full of great info, thanks for the music lead.
