This is enjoyable, but good though it is, you couldn't say her voice had matured into the wonderful instrument it became in the 50's and 60's. Some of those Chick Webb/Ella novelty songs were pretty dire, basically as crappy as some of today's pop.

There is a young Ella Fitzgerald singing on this track, but it really should be credited to Chick Webb and his orchestra.... 1936. Chick was huge at the time, she was an unknown singer he'd discovered.

Don't credit anyone else but Ella, she was an amazing and soulful singer. Chick Webb was lucky to find her that early.

Ella swings nicely, but of all the jazz songstresses, Ella is probably the worst to be paired with this seedy lyric. She was never into drugs or alcohol. Better fit for Billie Holiday, an actual addict, or Sarah Vaughan who drank and smoked marijuana. Ella didn't do any of that. Part of the large volume of novelty material she recorded for Decca. Thank God she and Norman Granz found each other.

Here's the news: I was born in 1949. People in most of society who didn't indulge in weed referred to a guy who is drunk as "high. Also "stoned."

Just heard this by Alan Cumming and a young singer I'm unfamiliar with. I love Mr. Cumming; but NO ONE can come close to this. Ms. Fitzgerald nails it. She was a genius.

I think you are referring to the cover version by Alan Cumming (That is one unfortunate name) and a small band called The Hot Sardines I think.

Miss Elizabeth is excellent, but Ella is still Queen.

The other two are right. Cumming makes an appearance with the Hot Sardines to sing it. The lead singer is Elizabeth Bougerol. The band is a neat, tight outfit.

The Cummings are an ancient Highland Scottish clan, in earlier times spelt Comyn. One of them, the Red Comyn, was a claiman to the Scottish throne in the 14th Century.
