Ella Fitzgerald - Wacky Dust Lyrics

They call it wacky dust
It's from a hot cornet
It gives your feet a feeling so breezy
And oh, it's so easy to get

They call it wacky dust
It brings a dancing jag
And once it starts, then only a
Sap'll refuse to Big Apple or Shag

Oh I don't know just why it gets you so high
Putting a buzz in you heart
You'll do a marathon you'll wanna go on
Kickin' the ceilin' apart

They call it wacky dust
It's something you can't trust
And in the end the rhythm will stop
When it does, then you'll drop
From happy wacky dust

Oh we don't know just why it gets you so high
Putting a buzz in you heart
You'll do a marathon you'll wanna go on
Kickin' the ceilin' apart

They call it wacky dust, yeah
It's something you can't trust
And in the end the rhythm will stop
When it does, then you'll drop
From happy wacky

The rhythm will stop
When it does, then you'll drop
From happy wacky dust

Back in the day when cocaine was being sold as a cure all for anything that ailed you, you could buy a kit that came with a metal tube for snorting. Nice that they gave you everything you might need. How kind of them. Lol

  23. V.... B....

she is definitely talking about dope hot cornet could be like a tooter (staw for snorting dope)

  24. M.... M....

It seems to me this song is about the high you get from music of this sort, not narcotics. I'm surprised nobody commenting below has even alluded to this interpretation. The title is meant to draw you to the latter conclusion and to have you begin thinking about various substances, but the lyrics unequivocally tell you it is music (particularly swing music) they are talking about--unless, of course, you keep your stash of illicit drugs in a "hot cornet".  For those that don't know, the "Big Apple" and "Shag" are styles of dancing that were popular during the Big Band Era.

From my experience, most songs in the 1930s containing references to drugs dealt primarily with Marijuana (then commonly referred to in the vernacular of the U.S. as "reefer", "tea" or "gage") such as  in the songs "Reefer Man" and "Viper Mad", though there are also some references to opiate and cocaine use, e.g. most notably in Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher".

"She messed around with a bloke named Smoky
She loved him though he was cokey
He took her down to Chinatown
And he showed her how to kick the gong around"

    O.... S....

coke goews the wrong direction for me to really love the world.

    O.... S....

@The Old Bore ur the raw meat type

  26. B.... ....

The "Hot Cornet" part made me think it was about marijuana.
Also, it's on an album of "Reefer songs", songs about weed.
Makes me think it's not about cocaine. Though coke does also make sense.

  27. A.... M....

    @iammrcancer fuck yeah

  28. m.... ....

    @Alphabex8
We can shop all we want but we will still come back to "our drug of choice"
Mine was alcohol but not just any alcohol. It had to be vodka. I loved screwdrivers although i didn't like orange juice, ice, or a glass. And who needs to save the cap on the bottle. Alcohol is a drug. If it came in powder someone would snort, smoke or shoot it.

  29. T.... R....

    Look, but don't touch.

  30. D.... F....

I love this song even the version by Manhattan Transfer

  31. m.... ....

In 1906 Macy's department store sold a folding container that had a vial of liquid cocaine and one of heroin. It included a syringe. For 4 dollars. It was promoted for women who suffered the "vapors" or known now as depression.

1830 was the first recorded year that people had "gas" parties. They would tape the doors and windows of a room and release the gas.. Nitrous Oxide.
