Ella Fitzgerald - Love For Sale Lyrics

When the only sound in the empty street,
Is the heavy tread of the heavy feet
That belong to a lonesome cop
I open shop.
When the moon so long has been gazing down
On the wayward ways of this wayward town.
That her smile becomes a smirk,
I go to work.

Love for sale,
Appetising young love for sale.
Love that's fresh and still unspoiled,
Love that's only slightly soiled,
Love for sale.
Who will buy?
Who would like to sample my supply?
Who's prepared to pay the price,
For a trip to paradise?
Love for sale
Let the poets pipe of love
in their childish way,
I know every type of love
Better far than they.
If you want the thrill of love,
I've been through the mill of love;
Old love, new love
Every love but true love
Love for sale.

Appetising young love for sale.
If you want to buy my wares.
Follow me and climb the stairs
Love for sale.
Love for sale.

  2. James Casarella

29 total losers with no taste clicked on Thumbs down - shame on them!

  3. Wayne Turner

This is truly the definitive version of the song, mainly because it includes the into that Cole Porter wrote to go with it, leaving no doubt what the song is actually about. Ella's superb voice and style captures its essence perfectly.

    Trevor Morris

    Wayne Turner
Ella's own best version as well. She also recorded it with Joe Pass, but it's definitely not so good as this. As you say, this is absolutely the definitive version.

  4. Evert Van Der Hik

As a fan of instrumental Jazz music I never cared about vocals, but hell what is this good!

    Marc S

Do you know an instrumental version of this song ? I'm sure I've heard it somewhere with incredible violins on it.

    Evert Van Der Hik

@Marc S i know the Chet Baker version from live at Ronnie Scott's but it is totally different

    Marc S

@Evert Van Der Hik I know this one , pretty good isn't it ? Love cher Baker

elia .07 What's your reply to my comment supposed to mean ?

  15. Robin Gray

I'm very thankful to have seen Ella twice, live in Belfast,in the 60's .She was with out doubt the greatest singer of all time.

    Spark _

Robin Gray I totally agree!!! I was so lucky to see her at Louie Armstrong's concert in Japan! They were the very best & still ARE!!!

  16. Borsalino10

    De viejo quiero ser pervertido.

  17. darylmichael7

    Smooth voice. Smooth arrangement. Excellent

  18. Doug Ward

How did Cole Porter get away with a song about prostitution in that day and age ? I'm glad he did !

    Deepinder Cheema

@elia .07 If you listen to Jane Birkin's version from the 1970s you can feel the hookers lament, totally void here.

    John Threlfall

@Deepinder Cheema Interesting comment Deepinder , thanks for the reference. I think Ella was standing back from involvement , but the lyrics still conveyed the lament , and they also painted a picture of an earlier era. I think the recording was a very good one , but I'm now going to look for Jane Birkin's version!

    John Threlfall

@Deepinder Cheema I just had a listen to Jane Birkin's version . Wow , totally different approach with the voice and the funk band! Very good!

    Deepinder Cheema

@John Threlfall Many thanks for checking her out. She understands the lyric. In 1985 she made a film of the song in the doc about her life in song by Mike Mansfield in a series called Ladybirds. It really was follow me and climb the stairs.

    John Threlfall

@Deepinder Cheema That is a good doco! Very interesting view of French film and music. I like the song with the marimba duo backing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lxf2u--tf08

  20. Xavier Bluhm Soubira

    Best song ever

  21. BETHEL WULF

And I'm here because of Chevy Chase smh......

  22. Junko Higashijima

I think this song is about Cole Porter himself. Love is his sheet music. And shop is his piano.

  23. Spydr Mac

Wow...her voice is so silky smooth. Jealous? Heck yeah! I'd love to be able to sound like Ella but even more than that, I wish I had been around to see her sing this joint in person. Due to my musical tastes, I've been told on many occasions that I was just born too late. I prefer to think I was around back in the day but "fell victim to jazz and liquor"! I'm just rediscovering the grand music of my past life!

  24. Jean-Michel Prillieux

Cette mélodie est signée Cole Porter.

    Happy Hundredth, Miss Ella.
Cole Porter's musical paean to the Oldest Profession, performed impeccably by Ella, arranged by Buddy Bregman, produced by Norman Granz.
This is from "The Cole Porter Songbook," released on brand-new record label Verve (the first release on Verve, in fact), the first of eight such "Songbook" recordings (nine, if you count the "Jobim Songbook" she recorded in the '70's on Pablo). These recordings created the concept of "The American Songbook," which every singer, aspiring or established, has to wrestle with.
(This extremely musically-sophisticated, extremely lyrically-risque musical meditation, from the point of view of a Working Girl, was written in 1930.)

  58. diamondlife

This song inspired Sade's writing of the song, "Smooth Operator". Coast to coast L.A. to Chicago, western male, across the north and south to Key Largo, LOVE FOR SALE. In "Smooth Operator" the "love for sale" part was sung with the same cadence. Also she had mentioned that Ella is one of her favorite singers.
