Ella Fitzgerald - Fascinating Rhythm Lyrics

Got a little rhythm, a rhythm, a rhythm
That pitter-pats through my brain...
So darn persistent, the day isn't distant
When it'll drive me insane
Comes in the morning without any warning
And hangs around me all day
I'll have to sneak up to it, someday and speak up to it
I hope it listens when I say:

Fascinating rhythm, you've got me on the go
Fascinating rhythm, I'm all a-quiver
What a mess you're making, the neighbors want to know
Why I'm always shaking, just like a fliver.

Each morning I get up with the sun
Start a-hopping, never stopping
To find at night no work has been done

I know that once it didn't matter, but now you're doing wrong
When you start to patter, I'm so unhappy
Won't you take a day off, decide to run along
Somewhere far away off, and make it snappy

Oh, how I long to be the gal I used to be
Fascinating rhythm, oh won't you stop picking on me?

I know that once it didn't matter, but now you're doing wrong
When you start to patter, I'm so unhappy
Won't you take a day off, decide to run along
Somewhere far away off, and make it snappy

Oh, how I long to be the gal I used to be
Fascinating rhythm
Fascinating rhythm
Won't you stop picking on me...

Listened to Jacob Colier's version before this, and it sounds so slow! I still like it, though!

    T.... M....

It is a wonderful version. Nelson Riddle was a fantastic arranger, but he did not swing as hard as Billy May, for example

I know that in the original version it is "the man" but please man, if you could just understand how opressed this woman was in her life...

    S.... E....

    Simone Evar - Ikr???

    S.... E....

She's a woman, she changed the lyrics, this is not the first time this has been done

  12. P.... C....

Heard many versions of this tune, but Ella masters it, in a way no one can duplicate. Just like her rendition of Midnight Sun. Her timing, vocal style, intonation, etc. are just impeccable.

    P.... C....

You should absolutely check out Jacob Collier's rendition! It is incredible!

Not a word about who wrote it, why it was written, or when it was written! So I'm gonna go look it up, and do the same... say nothing. Where does this get us if it becomes the common problem that it has become!

    Artist - title (date)
Written by Common Courtesy and learning this from observation.

    L.... ....

@Lengo67 Written by George Gershwin, lyrics by his brother Ira Gershwin. Their sister said when he first heard it Ira walked out of the studio saying 'how do you expect me to write a lyric for that!'

    L.... ....

+Helen Bang I believe it was one of the last pieces George Gershwin wrote before his death.

    L.... ....

+Neil Haslam No, it was published in his 1932 songbook, he died in 1937. His Dad misheard the title and called it 'Fashion on the River'. The last song George and Ira wrote was "Love is here to stay."

    L.... ....

+Helen Bang Thanks for clarifying that. Kind regards.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascinating_Rhythm as a basic reference. It was written in 1924 for the musical, "Lady Be Good". I've seen the musical. In the reprise of the tune at the end, it is retitled "Fascinating Wedding", because since the musical is a comedy, the boy and girl get married at the end.

What must it have been like to see this in your local town's (probably only) record shop window?!?!?!
