Electric Light Orchestra - Kuiama Lyrics

My My Kuiama, she came in the morning
she smiled but the tears on her little face
showed the pain that had been in that far off place
so sad, treated so bad

My My Kuiama, don't break your heart tryin
to say how your ma and your pa passed away
and they left you to wander the ruin and decay
real mean, that bullet machine

See here Kuiama, now ten thousand miles
is a long long way and you're here today
and you won't go back so you might say
hello, how do you do

Kuia stop your cryin, there's no bombs a'fallin
no horsemen in the night a'ridin through your dreams and tearing at your life
baby goodnight

No more silver rain will hit your ground
and no more guns will sound
and no more life be drowned
No more trenches where the soldiers lie
and no more people die
beneath that big black sky

Wake up Kuiama, I got somethin to tell you
it's just that I mean, well that is to say,
that I'm trying to explain but I'll start again,
for you, I must be true.

Kuia in this country, they got rules with no reason
they teach you to kill and they send you away
with your gun in your hand, you pick up your pay
so cool, that no mercy tool

Kuia please believe me? I just couldn't help myself.
I wanted to run but they gave me a gun
and they told me the duty I owed to my Fatherland.
I made my stand.

Kuia I just shot them, I just blew their heads open,
and I heard them scream in their agony
Kuiama she waits there for me
True blue, you saw it through.

Electric Light Orchestra Kuiama Comments

Heard again on SiriusXM Deep Tracks on the way to work this morning. Beautiful song. Had to play it again. I'm happy to be 1,000th like of this song.

  2. Missy V

Just when I think I couldn't be more blown away by ELO, I run across another song I've never heard before and get blown away all over again. Damn!

  3. jevicci

    This song just guts me.

  4. pearl harbor

I always drive alone at night and play elo, loud. I always ask God, please don't take me at night, that would break my heart. In the summer, that scorching summer that makes me long for death will make sense and be ok, but please do not take me in the cool, dark, beautiful night.

  5. pearl harbor

One of my favorite songs by them. '..... you might say hello, how do you do.' He's teaching her how to be human again. I've been there.

  6. JLynnefan

The best anti-war- Songs ever 👍

  7. Miguel Hernandez

I hope that the more than 146,000 people who have seen this video also like it. I couldn't understand that they didn't like it

  8. disgruntledtoons

This song came on Sirius (channel 27, the really cool one) just as I was getting to work this morning. I stayed in the care for another five minutes to hear the rest of the song before I went in. That means I'll be leaving work five minutes later on Friday, but it's worth it.

  9. Jerry Harrell

What instrument is playing solo and is it a cello or violin and who is playing it

    SRSOS

It's a cello. Colin Walker played the cello on this song.

  16. hernan bustamante

  17. Depcom

First heard this back in 73 on KDKD FM in Tempe, Arizona while attending ASU. Been listening to it ever since. My favorite from ELO.

  28. Olaf Habermann

    Do miss Bev Bevan

  29. Christopher Norris

6:00 One the best violin solos I've ever heard! And just listen to that closing chord (10:30).

  30. aliasdyln33

E.L.O. - never boring. They just step outside the friggin' box. As they did here. I so love this Band!

  31. Droner

I like the harder edge of the older albums. It's too bad Lynne busted up the band and went all synthesizer after "Out of the Blue."

  32. RabbiJazz

There is no possible way to describe this song in one word, but please allow me to say this: It is a musical masterpiece, however not one I can listen to all the time. I can never listen to this entire song without crying, sometimes almost hysterically. This is the only piece of artwork that describes war through the eyes of war’s most saddest victims, the children. If you did not serve in the military during wartime, especially Nam, you could never understand.

  33. Bright Argyle

This song always gives me chills, I found the album in a second hand record shop when I was teenager along with Time and Secret Messages. Excellent music!

  34. Brandon B

    Great post. TY

  35. David Smith

My first concert, November 1973, was ELO, and they did Roll Over Beethoven, Kuiama, and I think From the Sun to the World, and the memories are magical. Also on the bill was War (Cisco Kid, The World is a Ghetto).

  36. easy2120

How awesome would it be for Lynne to re-record this song like he did the ELO hits? Likely never to happen, but would be awesome.

  37. James Czelatdko

ELO,and Jeff Lynne were king.endless classic tuneage.

  38. Tony

I listened to this song a million times after my girlfriend left for her home in Asia. She was gone 10,000 miles, I wandered the streets, alone and destitute, in rain and shine

  39. Glamourleichensack

...best Violin-Solo in a Popsong ever! Very great! Großartig! ( Part from 5.25 - 8.25)

  40. NightIsRight

    What album is this off

    rob051160

    Electric Light Orchestra II (1973)

  41. MattHatter

Who's playing the violin on this? Is is Wilf Gibson?

  42. Tall Dude

The best ELO song ever. Period.

  43. mike mostad

The 11 that gave a thumbs down need some serious education in regards to what constitutes great, timeless one of a kind killer rock n roll.

  44. Jo Baecker

I won the "Ole' ELO" album (an early greatest hits record) in a radio call-in contest somewhere around 1975. I kept playing this tune over and over, it was one of the best tracks I'd ever heard. Still is.

    straightface

Jo Baecker I had that album too and used to play this song over and over.

    You Too

Yep that was an edited version of Kuiama but still good

  45. marty3888

I'm a big ELO fan. This is the first time hearng this song or even heard of it.

    Javier Ger

    Then, not so big. Sorry

    You Too

@Javier Ger someone can be a big fan and not know everything about them. Example, im a huge fan of ELO albums '71-'81 but not really a big fan afterwards, but I still consider myself a huge fan since I was a little kid in the 70's

  46. Washington Was

    11 otários

  47. Werner Bednarzik

This song has the power of letting you loose control of your emotions if you're willing to, maybe even if not! Absolutely magnificent!

  48. Jeff Lynne's ELO 2020 Tour

The best progressive Rock of 1973. Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO.

  49. Markku Koljonen

    ;D Yep! by Tinja&Markku :D

  50. Jeff Lynne's ELO 2020 Tour

  51. dan b

still my favourite ELO song of all times!

  52. Jussi Tarponen

very good songalbum cover of ELO´s second album was IMO more beauti´ful in US than in GB.

  53. David Tong

Here's a song, the longer the better.

    mike jones

Thank you very much for the lyrics.

  55. Rebecca LaForgey

    I love it! BEAUTIFUL song!

  56. ircimager

haven't listened to this song for about 35 years. actually had the album it came from when i was a kid, but it got given to my uncle because i "couldn't appreciate" the music like he could, lol

  57. Daniel Diaz

La mejor época progresiva de ELO!!!!!

  58. King J-rin

Speaking honestly I can't really pick a favorite song from ELO, but this is definitely a contender

    sdgakatbk

I'm in agreement here. There's so much to chose from!

  59. Russell Bieniek

    bravisimooooooooooooooooooooo(standing ovation!!!!!!)

  60. Mark T.

One of my favorite ELO tunes, one of my favorite tunes of the 70s, and one of the best heavy, emotive rock songs of all time.. Thank you for posting this!

  61. Sonny Dean

I don't recall this ELO song. That said, I graduated high school in 79' having seen ELO live in concert in 77' I'll never forget that show or this band. I still play my ELO albums from the late 70's very loud! ELO included stings when I saw them. If you play a cello in a rock band, I love you!

  62. punstress

This would have been just a bit better with lyrics on screen. But it's my fav ELO song and I wonder why it's so hard to find!

  63. Jim Clint

Jeff Lynne writes songs with not just the melody. There are many tunes going on throughout, different riffs from cellos, guitar, keyboards. Brilliant, have been listening to ELO now for over 40 years, no other band can compare to them.

    vincent Lawrence

Jim..Top man, ELO are simply just moreish.

    Missy V

I agree. No other band like them.

  64. mwgeek1234

this is amazing track however has anyone else noticed it sounds like lola by the kinks

  65. elofan54

Mik should have been invited to the HOF ceremonies

    TheFallenColumn

While I do agree with you, I just want to point out that Mik didn't play on this track. This was their second violinist Wilf Gibson. Sorry, if you knew that already.

    ClassicTVMan1981X

Wilf sadly lost his life on October 21, 2014, aged 69 years old, after suffering some sort of illness. I am pretty sure he was posthumously honored when ELO were inducted (by Dhani Harrison) into the RNRHOF.

  66. jcBurton2094

3:02  Lynne sounds like Ozzy here

    Philippe Rossel

    Both are from Birmingham.

  67. Paula Walters

Thanks so much. Love the track

  68. Jussi Tarponen

jeff lynne was a genius oncethe later 1980 + s stuff si nothing compared to this

  69. Leo Conway

I've been loving ELO since the Move..this is their best in my opinion.

  70. Rik Webb

    Amazing and disturbing. Art.

  71. George Snedeker

Huge song with great memories. I saw ELO in the early 70's at the Tower theater in Phila, and they were amazing. Thanks for posting.

    see noevo

+George Snedeker I saw them at The Tower around '76 for the Eldorado tour.

  72. janek ziewiecki

elo srelo moja play lista jest zajebista

    janek ziewiecki

tak janek masz racje jesteś zajebisty

  73. divisioneight

That violin solo is screaming - the best in modern recorded history (just short of Pinchas Zuckerman's Vivaldi solos).

    see noevo

+divisioneight Screamin' is right, around 6:43.
The solo reminds me a bit of the nice one in It's a Beautiful Day's "Whitebird."

    George Snedeker

+see noevo I love Whitebird by It's a Beautiful Day. This solo reminds me of that one too.

    NotOrdinaryInGames

You should hear the violin solo on Stewart Copeland's composition "Grace".

    Zak Ramsey

Especially the one at 6:22 - 6:27. That really gives me the shivers down the spine, it's that good.

    explication

@Zak Ramsey Oh, yeah, he's right, and I get the shivers from the bit at 6:44 to 6:49. Soaring up and clawing down at the same time like some kind of death bird.

  74. Tim Schwerdtfeger

    11.5 minutes of ELO bliss...

  75. private number

elo2 the best album elo ever fantastic stuff . saw them in the early 70s before the release of the album wonderful times

  76. Fox Piano

One of the best songs ever written...

    janek ziewiecki

come to my playlist is facking goood 😜😞😛😚😉😄😙🐷🐮

    Willie Gordon

+Fox Piano This is better than the hits that radio always plays.

  77. Jeni Kaybee

This song just drops me to my knees. Intensity and density abound. Move over The Moody Blues "Have Your Heard" and Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso "Metamorphosois"

  78. Bob Harris

Amazing song, I have loved ELO for years ever since I got the 8-track for Ole' ELO when I was young. This was one of my favorite tracks even though at the time I didn't understand the lyrics and what they meant. Once I found out that they were about a Vietnam soldier that was explaining to a young girl in a village that he was the one that killed her parents it took on a new and even more profound meaning.

  79. Борис Хромов

Наиболее выразительная композиция в классическом прог-роке

  80. Xuan Nam Nguyen

    Goosebumps... goosebumps everywhere

  81. sdgakatbk

ELO did a lot of songs I like. This was always a favorite.

  82. JackinTheWoods

According to Wikipedia, this song was re-released on OLE ELO is that correct? I owned that LP and this song sounds familiar.

    Rob Creel

+JackinTheWoods It was re-released on Ole'. That was the first ELO album I bought. It was initially on ELO 2. I had that one on cassette. After 40 some years one word comes to mind. Timeless.

  83. Roberto Vaca

Realmente maravilloso, incomparable, maestros de la música moderna, irrepetibles.

  84. Satizfacktion

    That ending... so Radiohead.

    Lucy Shaw

Radiohead??? Who popped up many years after....

    Florentino Sanz Pastor

    Satizfacktion .. Joking isn't??

  85. Kim Garner

    thanks for the upload.

  86. Josef Nagy

My first ELO album, the dearest and most played...

  87. Brian Carter

i'm sure jeff lynne hates this one. he said he hated the long songs that were just jamming. they probably have never done this live but this is a really tremendous piece. the band sounded fine without the full orchestra and choir. this is a great anti-war song. his voice is powerful and sensitive. the guitars are really nice. this was a great closer for the album. this was a good version of "the electric light orchestra".

    john bones

+Brian Carter They have done this live in the early days.

    Richard Valleau

Yeah I do recall them playing this . Believe it was at Lincoln center, nyc circa 73-74

Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita

I think I read somewhere that Kuiama is, according to him, the best song he ever wrote.

    jevicci

    Live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1oqBJY3SVs

This is certainly not "just jamming".

  88. Trekkerle

criminally underrated elo song, the bbc live version is even better

i am sure roy woods answer of this was his great wear a fast gun from the first wizzard album

  89. jeffthrow6892

Definitely one of the top highlights in ELO's career......

  90. Richard Fairbairn

    Freaking awesome

  91. Fred Libby

i hope u people do some research on the name and find out she was a little veitnam girl .

    Shawn Horton

Fred Libby yup did many years ago .doesn't discount the power of you the song

  92. trfesok

In my ELO with an edited (for TV) version of the backing track. Thanks for the upload!

  93. Glen Carta

a lot of sadness........but great sadness

    Fred Libby

    @Glen Carta u say right...great.

    Glen Carta

    yes indeed Fred !!

  94. skydog757

ELO has scads of great songs, but this is the one that I keep coming back to, over and over.  Perfect.

    Richard Fairbairn

    +skydog757 Awesome song

  95. eradeziel

    Just epic.

  96. Ken Lambert

    Very cool ELO tune!
