Electric Light Orchestra - Down Came The Rain Lyrics

You let me go when I was down
You let me fall when I could drown
You knew how much you meant to me
You took me down that slippery slope
You left me there without a hope
You saw just what you wanted to see

Down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came the rain
Falling down on me
Whoa, whoa, whoa

And now the time has come at last
Those days would slide into the past
And never more will there be misery
I'm moving on in my own time
I'm getting further down the line
I'm trying to see what's going on

Down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came the rain
Falling down on me
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came the rain
Falling down on me

Down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came the rain
Falling down on me
Whoa, whoa, whoa

Down came, down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came, down came the rain (oh yeah)
Down came, down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came, down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came, down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came, down came the rain (oh yeah)
Down came, down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came, down came the rain (down came the rain)
Down came, down came the rain (down came the rain)

Electric Light Orchestra Down Came The Rain Comments
  1. D.... B....

I wish that Jeff Lynne would hire some amazing cgi company and get them to do something real trippy with that ELO spacehip flying through outer space - to boldly go where no rock n roller has gone before - to infintiy and beyond!

  2. S.... N....

Great song, maybe they won’t be underrated and get recognition for their success and genius.

  3. b.... ....

I'll be rocking along to the ELO-wilbury beat all the way to the end of the line.

  4. U.... N....

I'm sorry to say this. But for the most part this album and "Alone in the Universe" all the songs sound very similar. Also this title is very similar to "Rain is Falling"

    U.... N....

@ZZM Oh that makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

    U.... N....

@User Name You are welcome. Talking about rain, he wrote "Concerto for a raining day" (my fav). Then it depends if you like his songs or not. I prefere "Alone in the Universe" but also in this case there are songs I like more than other ones.

    U.... N....

@ZZM Holy Crap! I totally agree. I like the "Big Wheels" especially. The only ones I really like from Alone in the Universe are "Alone in the Universe" and "When I was a Boy". I wish I was born in the 50s

    U.... N....

    @User Name 😎

    U.... N....

@ZZM You alike my fellow ELO lover

  5. K.... G....

    Fucking brilliant!

  6. E.... Q....

I'm a huge ELO fan and love the gritty sound of this record but I miss the strings and the restrained use of synths...

  7. G.... L....

In my opinion this new album sounds like classic elo and I love it the only song im not keen on is all my love

  8. M.... L....

    Love this song ❤️

  9. M.... G....

Is there nothing this man can not do? He is so amazing. Most of us fans are in our 60s and Jeff's in he's early 70. Great album✌🇺🇸

  10. H.... J....

    😎WEHAVETOKEEPTHISMANALIVEASLONGASPOSSIBLE ...

    H.... J....

  12. B.... W....

    Absolutely Awesome Jeff

  13. p.... p....

La voix d'ELO persiste et signe, à travers le temps, au son d'une mélopée pop classieuse et immortelle … Merci Jeff Lynne. :-)

  14. C.... B....

This song deserves to be listened

  15. L.... L....

I can hear Tom Petty's spirit in this one.

  16. J.... S....

Jeff is a true 21st Century Man!

  17. e.... ....

What is wrong with the cd sound?? It sounds dead too compressed and flat. I dont like its sound. Lacks impact dynamics and life.
I am talking about the SOUND..i love jeff and all his songs. Previous albums sounded better...i have them all.

  18. j.... j....

    Meraviglioso come sempre

  19. t.... ....

Excellent, I keep wanting to hear George singing harmony!

  20. l.... p....

    En una palabra "gracias"

  21. W.... S....

Yeah noticed that too, at least six pieces have rain as theme, ha, interesting,

  22. G.... E....

    Wow...Jeff Lynne...when he writes it’s usually very melodic....this one doesn’t let u down...👍👍

  23. J.... G....

    Yup.
    Starts with a driving beat.
    Ends in softness.

  24. T.... W....

What is interesting is that Jeff Lynne has taken a particular kind of
musical cliche present in Rock and Roll music since its inception. There
really are only two variations of structure to basic rock: three chord
music and four chord (three plus the relative minor). Learn that
progression and you can play and comprehend most early to mid era R&R songs at
first listen. Jeff's genius has been to work around the four chord
structure using the addition of augmented, minor 4th chords and a few
other in-key flourishes (and sometimes accidentals). With his original
songs he carries on the traditions of early Rock. What that does for
the listener is make his music/songs practically instantly accessible .
They strike that inner mysterious chord to which we westerners are
plugged into subconsciously. It is almost impossible therefore to dislike a
    Jeff Lynne song.

  25. P.... M....

That's the stuff Baby, Old School instant Classic!

  26. k.... ....

Toto is infatuated by doing songs with girls names, ELO songs with rain, Styx songs with 'Time' ; Alan Parsons has at least one instrumental on every album, seems some bands have their little quirks or stamp mark.

  27. a.... n....

Down Came The Rain Is A Great Song And Wonderful Masterpiece By Jeff Lynne.

  28. S.... J....

    Aur kid Jeff,another great song

  29. B.... A....

    Me fascina esta musica

    B.... A....

Es una musica que es del gusto de mucha gente

  30. f.... ....

I'd like to hear what Jeff Lynne, Barry Gibb and Paul McCartney could put together as a side group.....I like this song.

  31. h.... n....

Love the little 'yeah' at the end of 'misery' at 1:22

  32. r.... ....

All Hail to the master musician.

  33. h.... n....

This is just Pure Pure ELO and Jeff Lynne.

  34. N.... D....

Congratulations to Jeff lynnes ELO officially the number 1 album in the UK well done Jeff a very Brilliant album and well deserved

    N.... D....

What brilliant news Jeff lynnes elo doing a European tour this year cant wait to see him in Manchester

  35. S.... 6....

My favorite song in new album!

  36. W.... O....

Nuevamente brilló el sol de la música con la genialidad de Jeff Lynne, toda mi admiración para éste gran intérprete, vocalista, arreglista y músico superdotado y su banda.

  37. j.... c....

The songs on this new album are all lightweight. We are all beyond this baby food

    j.... c....

Well as the albums no 1 in the UK this week, clearly not.

    j.... c....

    Fuck you

  38. D.... W....

The lyrics are perfect!! 👑💟I love!!

  39. M.... L....

What a fking tune I love it

  40. M.... W....

I'm shocked by how good this is. Most artists either reinvent themselves every now and again, or eventually become pale copies of their former selves, but this is very much ELO yet totally fresh. Love it.

  41. P.... S....

This album is growing on me. I particularly like Down Came Lorraine. I don't know where she came down from or why she kept falling on him but it's classic Jeff.

    P.... S....

I think she came from the bedroom upstairs? 😁

    P.... S....

    Out Of The Blue? LOL!

  42. M.... A....

This song grabbed me right away. The verse is somewhat heavy. The lead guitar repeating the notes through the chord changes adds complexity and also binds it. It's as if you were holding it together, hanging on and not acknowledging loss. But not feeling good. Then the song drops down into the chorus, which is very clear. Down came the rain. It's clarifying and purifying. The loss in now undeniable, but maybe then there can be acceptance and that makes possible moving on. The guitar solo echoes this. It's simple but beautiful. The single string repeats two notes and then a second string is added in harmony and they both fall off. It's as if you're just hanging on. Then whatever it is you're hanging onto falls apart. And you follow it down into heartbreak. A perfect song.

  43. D.... M....

I am not sure if I like this song so I am just going have to listen to it again

  44. h.... x....

God bless ELO even I'm an atheist

  45. D.... ....

Jeff and his rain...must be because he's from Brum, ha ha! Long may he reign [rain?] all his precipitation songs are brilliantly blistering and this little gem is no exception. Love that man and his undeniable talent!! xx

  46. A.... R....

    Just superb!!!

  47. j.... b....

    the best rock band

  48. J.... L....

This song is great 👍🏻 I love the lyrics and melody. The Genius Jeff Lynne did it again ❤️

  49. .... ....

    👍👍👍👍👍

  50. d.... e....

    Just brilliant music.

  51. e.... ....

Love elo have listened to their music for years

  52. B.... C....

As always: Electrifying since the 70's, ole ELO! 😁

  53. P.... W....

I would love to do ELO covers songs, but I cant sing when I am crying with the absolute pleasure of this music...

  54. J.... T....

I this Jeff Lynne wrote MUCH better songs in his youth. Like in the Idle Race, The Move and the 1970´s ELO
I think I am not alone in my opinion.

    J.... T....

Well yeah, but it's Jeff Lynne and if he wanted to, he could put out a record with only a fart on it, and it would still be widely appreciated, so this is actually not that bad :)

    J.... T....

Very few musicians write better music in their 70's than they did in their 20's or 30's. But I'll take anything Jeff puts out over today's crap.

    J.... T....

This music is still good, that's the difference. Most artists can't keep up this level of songwriting or sound (voice) quality over the years. A very obvious and easy point to make would be to say ELO's peak was in the 70s-80s.

  55. L.... C....

Amazing! This sounds so much like E.L.O. 40 years ago.

  56. D.... b....

Guys on a different planet .. class stuff and people are kopping it big time .. its fuckin genius stuff ..

  57. i.... ....

this is as dull as anything on Alone In The Universe.

  58. l.... g....

Ole..!!! great.,we like so much..!! greetings a doble hug from Granada/Spain.

  59. J.... W....

This makes me think about everything my ex did to me on purpose. :( Also like the album name, From out of nowhere :( Great album so far I like everything I hear :)

    J.... W....

@Neil Dodsworth Maybe Don't bring me down, strange magic. I don't have any albums. I just like the songs on the radio. Telephone line has a good sound to it. Mr blue sky. What great non commercial songs of theirs on the album and rarities should I listen to? Does anyone have the clear version of that Beatles rule song they did?

    J.... W....

@Jasmine Woww I like confusion and sweet talkin woman Jeff Lynne is a genius. Have you seen him live yet

    J.... W....

    @Neil Dodsworth No I didn't. I missed out on everything I'm sure. I'm a lot younger. Lol

    J.... W....

I saw him in Leeds 2018 are you in the UK he may tour this year

    J.... W....

What great news Jeff lynnes elo doing a European tour this year cant wait to see him in Manchester

  60. S.... O....

down came Jeff and please stay !!!!!

  61. A.... ....

    Sounding as awesome as ever

  62. p.... d....

I can hear Roy singing this    sounds a bit like   NOT ALONE ANYMORE         even still   great stuff

    p.... d....

Was going to make the same comment - it's an almost identical hook. A good one though!

  63. c.... ....

That same drum beat over and over again, love your music Jeff but please bring back Bev bevan mate

  64. C.... T....

I can happily say, as a fan of Jeff Lynne, that his two or three years of touring has done what it does to a lot of performers. Being out in the open and around other people has developed into a very well made album, much better than "Alone in the Universe" (only my opinion). While there were two or three songs that I personally felt were repeatable on the previous album, THIS album is made up of songs, all of which are very repeatable! Truly well done Jeff Lynne!!! If this was to be the last ELO album, you are truly going out on a winner, to be sure!

    C.... T....

    not the last!!!!!

  65. h.... n....

Question--has it been 5 years since the last album? Or am I dreaming?

    h.... n....

dreaming ... it was 4 years ago in 2015, Jeff release "Alone in the Universe" ... - still too long a wait, but I guess he was spending so much time touring that he didnt get much time to pull these new songs together.

  66. S.... ....

Nice..,...but we need the Orchestra Jeff

  67. B.... W....

ALL OVER THE WORLD....people are saying.....thanks Jeff....Christmas has come early.

  68. V.... ....

Good effort but for me Zoom is still the most consistent effort without the orchestra.

    V.... ....

Zoom was a very underrated album.

    V.... ....

I loved Zoom. It felt more complete and seriously considered than Alone in the Universe or this latest one. Jeff's lyrics on Zoom were also pretty good.

    V.... ....

Yeah this latest record has a few tracks that has Lynne on autopilot. He can do better....from a fan since 76.

  69. M.... N....

    Increíble........Pura magia

  70. T.... ....

It's interesting how he takes a lot of elements from his previous work and kinda mashes them together to create completely new songs. This one has a general "Balance Of Power" sound to it.

    T.... ....

Can you really be so serious? So serious?

    T.... ....

    @ZZM What?

    T.... ....

    @SublimeHawk6
    Night after night
I try to make it all fit together

    Night after night
I see you as someone I remember

    You took me by surprise
Opened up my eyes Now we gotta talk this over

Can it really be so serious?
To be all broken up and delirious
I guess we've really been out of touch
But can it really be so serious?

    (Serious, so serious)

    Day after day
I know it's not the way that you want it

    Day after day
I try to find the key, but it don't fit

(Day after day) But you know how it is

    (Night after night)
    No matter what I did

    (Day after day)
    We gotta talk it over

Can it really be so serious?
    .......................

  71. F.... L....

Love elo.and I see you in midnight blue.

  76. C.... M....

Jeff Lynne meets Teenage Fanclub. Nice!

  77. T.... m....

Makes my smile to hear ELO

  78. B.... ....

    Love it!

  79. P.... G....

Hermoso tema... JEFF eres un genio inmenso

  80. V.... S....

    Jeff Has Spoken!

  81. N.... G....

So grateful for this album. Right now, this is my fave. I love ELO because Jeff Lynne is a master at analyzing and synthesizing themes, riffs, moods... and it comes out sounding like ELO :-) It reminds me of some classic Phil Spector tracks because of the progression and turnaround (and the woahs), but it also has that sick repeating riff that brings to mind Dancing With Myself. But the overall feel is a slower and more driving vibe from Wendy Clear. I wonder what his actual influences are? Probably not Blink-182, but I'm sure if you go back far enough you can trace the DNA in both songs to a common rock and roll source.

  82. S.... S....

    Nice, nice and nice

  83. L.... L....

Efter Chicago är ELO dom bästa från 70 talet bara älska

  84. A.... G....

Sounds awesome have the CD of the other one the great songs of memories back when this one sounds terrific and love the way it sounds super job

  85. O.... O....

thank you for my ear-gasm !!

  86. M.... N....

The new album is ok. Good pop-songs, well produced and played. Good vocals! BUT! I miss the drama, the strings, the symphonic elements!

    M.... N....

    I agree ! 🎶🎶

  87. S.... F....

It was worth the wait, what a fantastic Album!

  88. T.... F....

Simply beautiful. We're so lucky to be alive in the time of Jeff Lynne and ELO.

    T.... F....

    Yes we are

  89. F.... p....

I'm listening to the full album, and I love it so far!

  90. W.... B....

Best track off the album for me so far. This and Help Yourself. Just bloody fantastic! Should be #1 everywhere in the Milky Way. Sound on the album is way better. So do yourself a favour and buy it.

    W.... B....

Is this song considered the first single to be released off the new album?

  91. R.... W....

This reminds me of "Is it Alright" from the 1986 album "Balance of Power".

    R.... W....

No, IIA is good but this is far better!

    R.... W....

LISTEN WE DON’T EVER BRING UP THAT HORRIBLE ALBUM

  92. J.... T....

couldn't wait any longer (my CD from Amazon is due any moment). What's truly remarkable is that Jeff is now in his 70's. I myself turn 70 in January. He still sounds fresh, unlike many of his contemporaries who sound 'worn and tired'! The best thing however is that he (the musical genius he has always been) is finally being appreciated by the media (and others) who really have been doing their best to ignore him all these years. The R&R HOF (sham that it is) finally inducted ELO a couple of years ago. When will they induct Jeff as a song writer, solo artist and producer?

  93. J.... ....

Best day ever! all my problems have melted away on this day, forget ISIS, forget Trump, forget all the bad stuff in the world today...Long Live ELO!

  94. O.... M....

    Muito legal

  95. C.... T....

I love absolutely love ELO! They can't make a bad song in my opinion. in fact I love them so much I'm going to make a playlist with just their videos! 🌹💖

    C.... T....

Been a ELO fan since 1977 I love this song great lyrics still think he should be sir jeff Lynne, genius

    C.... T....

Have you seen Jeff lynnes ELO if yes where did you see him. I saw him in Leeds last year. Absolutely amazing

    C.... T....

What is your favourite ELO song I sing sweet talking woman on karaoke

  96. B.... J....

I can hear the late Tom Petty singing this.

    B.... J....

Who knows, since Jeff wrote for Tom and so many others maybe this was written for Tom Petty but.. Things didn't work out so now Jeff is singing it for his friend. Only a thought..

    B.... J....

Ed Collins Jeff rated him. And George. And Bob. And Roy. And Del. Maybe you’re a better judge of vocal talent. But I doubt it.

    B.... J....

@Ed Collins wow. tom i remember. who the fuck are you? special ED collins. the non.....anybody that shit couldnt care less about. the traveling nobody. theirs plenty of you out there, everywhere.

    B.... J....

    Me too bless him ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

  97. S.... 3....

I'm so glad that after all these years, Jeff Lynne is still going with his music. He rocks! Pun maybe intended?

  98. T.... 7....

There's always a Message in his songs. That's what sets him apart from eveyone else. 😎 That emoji always reminded of Jeff Lynne, just minus the hair! Thank you for sharing! 💖

    T.... 7....

Yeah, it's a very personal message to me: Last train to London (I was in London and I missed the train) then it was Confusion, at 2 p.m. Out of nowhere, It's Over,
and in London Standing in the rain and The rain is falling. This happened in ONE single night....When I was a boy (teenager).
