Elbow - The Birds Lyrics

The birds are the keepers of our secret
As they saw us where we lay
In the deepest grass of springtime
In a reckless guilty haze

And they wove a sweet indifference
And it settled on our skin
Till the eyes that I remembered
For the last time drew me in

The birds, though I wore your glacial patience
To a smudge of bitter dust
On the last day you embraced me
With a glistening sapling trust

Did they sing a million blessings
As they watched us slowly part?
Do they keep those final kisses
In their tiny racing hearts

What are we gonna do with you?
Same tale every time
What are we gonna do with you?
Come on inside
Looking back is for the birds

What are we gonna do with you?
Same tale every time
What are we gonna do with you?
Come on inside
Looking back is for the birds

What are we gonna do with you?
Same tale every time
What are we gonna do with you?
Come on inside
Looking back is for the birds

What are we gonna do with you?
Same tale every time
What are we gonna do with you?
Come on inside
Looking back is for the birds

The birds are the keepers of our secret
As they saw us where we lay
In the deepest grass of springtime
In a reckless guilty haze

What are we gonna do with you?
Same tale every time
What are we gonna do with you?
Come on inside
Looking back is for the birds

Did they sing a million blessings
As they watched us slowly part?

What are we gonna do with you?
Same tale every time
What are we gonna do with you?
Come on inside
Looking back is for the birds

Do they keep those final kisses
In their tiny racing hearts

What are we gonna do with you?
Same tale every time
What are we gonna do with you?
Come on inside
Looking back is for the birds

What are we gonna do with you?
What are we gonna do with you?

I've got ADHD so the urge to skip ANY song is overwhelming... The bit at 3:26 is genuinely worth the wait everytime. I sit grinning waiting for it to erupt. 😍

Worth mentioning : The live version at Manchester Apollo is ... EPIC.

    Cai_rimson

All the gigs they do in Manchester is amazing because Guy is from Manchester himself, so the audience and band relationship is flippin hilarious

  15. aSymptomOfLife

Wow! Seattle's KEXP radio played this and I was blown away. I searched their history and found it! I am so happy!

  16. Victoria Corcoran

A slow build to the beautiful spine tingling moment when we lift off to sheer bliss !

  17. Jack Bradley

It is phenomenal live.. felt neutral about it until I saw it in a small venue in Seattle! Wow!

  18. Trevor Burnett

This song takes patience. Yes there is a payoff but what leads to it is so valuable. Listen to this track from start to finish. Love this band for the way they slowly build layers onto their tracks. It’s the same reason I love TOOL. This stuff is a little lighter but the songs are a journey. Such a treat.

  19. RAWVEGANDOCTOR

    Powerful song!

  20. Andy B

    wow. Good stuff

  21. Paul White

for some reason this song make me cry .love it sound better live tho

  22. CAnative64

We've been huge fans of Elbow for many, many years. And this last Monday, we saw them live for the first time in Oakland, CA, at the Fox. ***PHENOMENAL*** performance. Life-changing, really. My husband was able to record and post 5 videos of their work, here in YT. The *one* song that he didn't get live, was this one. Why? Because he (like everyone else in the theater) was completely entranced, and never thought to pick up the camera. From the first note, we were all mesmerized and sent into a trance. - It really was a perfect experience. So grateful to everyone on that stage for their commitment to their craft. World-class, all of it. Love Elbow even more than I already did. <3

    Emily Lott

We saw them the same tour at the closer at the Wiltern and felt the same. It was epic, chilling, mesmerizing. This one song was excellent!

  23. Daniele Betti

    great tune

  24. Sam Sneed

The part at 3:24 sounds like Love to Love by UFO

  25. creaky b

    Just fantastic

  26. reynaldo serrano

who else thought the album cover was a duck in excitement?

    Lance Mobach

    I did. xD

  27. Kara Mattaini

I have listened to this song thousands of times. I love Elbow so much and this is one of my favorite tracks. It's hypnotic. I wish is were 10 minutes long.... :)

  28. Carol Megson

I fell in love with Elbow last fall; I have 3 of their CDs and I don''t how I missed this song. It is absolutely amazing. Eight minutes? Who cares!!

  29. BODLAW1

This song is so darn good that it qualifies as a work of art.

    Selrisitai

No, it actually is a work of art. Music is art.

  30. Victoria Corcoran

This song moves me...its a creeper building to a crescendo of brilliance !

    Simon0

    supreme mastery and cacaphonic mayhem.

  31. Johanna Hebert

    Video not available 😩

  32. rosie beattie

What I love about this beautiful song is how it is replicated towards the end of the album by John Moseley, a Piano Tuner for 50 years.
His voice brings a whole new dimension to this song, and it works I feel.

  33. punkflop

"Okay this song is 8 minutes long, but do not be put off by the length if you have a short attention span. Trust me, the payoff from 3:25 onwards is completely worth your time. Every single time I listen to song, it’s like I sit there eagerly waiting for this part to kick in, and when it does, I can’t help but smile. Make sure to play ‘The Birds’ nice and loud, and I guarantee you’ll be coming back to it time and time again. Suddenly 8 minutes won’t feel so long after all." #punkflop #trackdrops #elbow http://trackdrops.com/2015/11/19/elbow-the-birds/

    Lisa Gutteridge

+punkflop Absolutely agree saw them in Manchester and its as good Live! F**k me Goosebumps when it kicks in and the smile :-)

    punkflop

Oh wow - so so jealous! Would love to see these guys live!

    Uoz

Although I do love the payoff at 3:25, the REAL climax (for me) is at 5:07 --

  38. Brad Romaker

it's very reminiscent of old Genesis, the synths, the vocals, very cool

  39. Paulo Sales

    ...magistral !

  40. paul stack

Elbow deserves to be enjoyed by more.  Damn shame.  Their track record is getting pretty difficult to ignore.

  41. Chad Andriowski

Love how the song builds toward the string entrance. Then the song just becomes epic.

  42. Sean Ferrell

as stupid as it seems. there aren't enough words to explain how much this makes me feel.

    Shaun Smith-Milne

    I feel the same

    HahaYass

    @Shaun Smith-Milne
How d'you know if Sean doesn't have enough words to describe how he's feeling?

    Shaun Smith-Milne

@HahaYass We have share a telepathy that all Shauns and Seans have...

    HahaYass

    @Shaun Smith-Milne
Hahah that's actually makes complete sense. Thanks for clearing that up Shaun.

  43. gogolplex74

Holy shit, I didn't like the new Elbow album as much as the others, but this song is Godlike

  44. TheBritomart

Yes, this song is now my whole life

  45. thirty2wins

I hear Brian Eno....but then I took the proper pills......A.v.a.l.o.n

  46. Shoomer1988

Only a few old troupers that took proper pills back in the day could make music as wonderful as this.

  47. JerryHester

No I had no idea there was that connection!

  48. Alba Lunatica

and also after 5.10 begins the initial theme

  49. Alba Lunatica

I had not read your comment, i agree with you...wonderful :-)

  50. Alba Lunatica

    magica dal 3.25...

  51. Alba Lunatica

    Meraviglioso ed elettrizzante!!!! Simply electrifying!!

  52. Simon0

elbow are good.. but knee are even better. Yeah thats the best i can do.

  53. Ashley Seager

anyone else love the effect that comes in just after 3:24 very cool!

  54. rj65

It's chilling how much Guy Garvey sounds like Rob Dickinson of Catherine Wheel. Though CW is heavier, both bands have that same melancholy and haunting feel in their songs.

  55. Hamish Mac

I like the description " emotional atmospheric " (sic) rock. Guy Garvey used to be a choiristor and this is the extension of his abilities. Its perfect, its working class, its British.

  56. DashingGameplay

    No, there isn't.

  57. Phobe Romys

Yeah, second part sounds like an outtake from the PGIII/IV period.
    (It's compliment, in my book ;-) )

  58. robert samec

    ale to je pěkná hudba...

  59. JerryHester

Sounds like a modern update of Peter Gabriel. Terrific.

  60. aurebahr

    dat bass

  61. masterflapdrol

This is a very original comment

  62. David van der Gulik

the way they keep adding wonderful harmonic details to a pretty basic loop during a song is amazing. You can find that pattern in most of their songs and it doesn't get boring for a second. Fantastic band, Beautiful music

  63. Timothy J. Hanrahan

in the words of George Carlin "just imagine that when you walk through the street and notice 90% of the people around you are fucking stupid, that half of them are stupider than them."

  64. usandthem73

epic performance from an epic band from englands musical capital yes that would be MANCHESTER.

  65. Pam Johnson

Poetry together with brilliant singing and music, totally addictive!

  66. Sulky Jim

my god but that's dull ....

    Kenny Oldham

The words for this song are absolute genius. Great song.

  67. J Bay

1 person here can't seem to find anything beautiful in the world.

  76. lisageeandthe422

Super Awesome! Really enjoyed listening; keep creating and sharing your music! All the best from Chicago - Lisa

  77. RobKirbyson14

To all the Bell Ends having a go at me... I listened to this song as I couldn't understand why it was so popular. Now I see why. It IS a bit monotonous. It IS typical Elbow... but now I listen again my comment was harsh... it has something that I can see appeals to people. I understand why people like Elbow... OK?

  78. Wade Houseman

How about, instead of bashing it, leave, and go to listen to your music? WOAH. That's a preposterous idea, isn't it? How about, instead of living and let live, you start an arguement? Great idea! Didn't your mom ever tell you if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all? Or at least say it within a group that wants to hear what you have to say? Yeah, sorry, this isn't that group.

  79. jarrod forshaw

Absolute genius....what a band!!! 22 yrs and still going strong.

  80. RobKirbyson14

Christ. ... It's monotonous typical Elbow... It's dross musically. Wake up.

  81. InParticularNobody

@thecrossfirecasualty hahah - fair comment. that'll teach me to make youtube comments on a monday morning with my serious head on. peace. ;-)

  82. Dan Fitzgerald

    @InParticularNobody I know dude. I was joking.

  83. InParticularNobody

@thecrossfirecasualty the double-meanings were flatly denied in all interviews. this is a song about our feathered friends, with tiny racing hearts.

  84. Dan Fitzgerald

"looking back is for the birds". Bit of a sexist statement hey?
