Elbow - New York Morning Lyrics

The first to put a simple truth in words
Binds the world in a feeling all familiar
'Cause everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Antenna up and out into New York
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
And oh my giddy aunt New York can talk
It's the modern Rome and folk are nice to Yoko

Every bone of rivet steel
Each corner stone and angle
Jenga jut and rusted water tower
Pillar, post and sign
Every painted line and battered ladder building in this town
Sings a life of proud endeavour and the best that man can be
Me I see a city and I hear a million voices
Planning, drilling, welding, carrying their fingers to the nub
Reaching down into the ground
Stretching up into the sky
Why?
Because they can
They did and do
So you and I could live together

Oh my God New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Oh my God New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Oh my God New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

The desire in the patchwork symphony
The desire like a distant storm
For love
Did it come from me
'Cause it feels like there's a big one round the corner

The desire in the patchwork symphony
Oh my God New York can talk
The desire like a distant storm
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
For love
Did it come from me
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

The way the day begins
Decides the shade of everything
But the way it ends depends on if you're home
For every soul a pillow and a window please
In the modern Rome where folk are nice to Yoko

Guy wanders through life listening and relating to all us mere humans and every now and again writes a song that makes me blub like a child separated from his mum in a shopping centre pissing his pants aged five.

  20. Noreen Stevenson

    perfect

  21. Louis St Jacques

    Beautiful

  22. John Cusato

Really starting to dig Elbow, man.  Great songs with a great vibe to it all.  A few of the songs off their most recent effort are memorable (My Sad Captains, Charge and New York Morning).

  23. Timbuktoo

never heard of these guys until a swiss radio intro....good stuff

  24. Richard Head

his intonation feels contrived to me. I dig the music though...

    malarbusto

@Richard Head Dunno. I know exactly what you mean though. I have a naturally Merseyside, close-to-scouse accent when I speak. When I play and sing it becomes massively diluted. But I think it's because the rock genre calls for it; or the so-called "mid-Atlantic" genre within the rock I play. Then again, the Beatles kept their accents when singing and it fitted totally. Proclaimers too. I think I'm with you. But then again (again), Guy Garvey's northerness and his loveliness seem one and the same thing. Fascinating topic really. Great song all the same.

  25. Terry Heise

love his tone and the harmonies!!!   I will be listening to more!

  26. Mark Illingworth

this album is the best of the year. dont like track 6 though.

  31. David Roberts

    fffing best thing ...

  32. sparkyinbath

What does the lyric, 'folk are nice to yoko' mean. It's repeated a couple of times. Anyone know. Thanks.

    Richard Head

he's trying to sound cool by name dropping "Yoko Ono"

    Miles Williams

    Not at all.
It's a reference to getting away from it all in the UK and being in the music industry. He explained it when I saw them live.

He doesn't try to be cool. He's not an inherently cool guy. Just the L.S. Lowry of music

    trip hammond

john lennon always thought of NYC as the rome of modern times, hence that line in the song. yoko (and john) suffered alot of backlash and judgement and cruelty as the result of being an interracial couple. people called her "ugly", etc etc. that's what it's referring to.  have a blessed day:) t

    Rinomo Morris

+trip hammond Best reply to the question. Hands down 👍😎

    revol148

He suffered a lot of backlash because Lennon's solo career was atrocious - hence he left the UK to avoid all the fans disappointment. Yoko Ono is a complete mystery - something which has made her a lot of money out of with very little talent.

  33. colin wright

and a bit like peter Gabriel....and a lot like elbow :)

    Jari Kailokari

My though exactly... brilliant musicians. Love the band.

  34. Andreas Heisel

  35. frankc32

    this is some good shit.

Grabbed my ear immediately, sounded like David Gilmour a little bit...

    Cheers!

    Adrian-Dragos Balaban

sounds even more like Peter Gabriel in my honest opinion

  36. joel horton

greatest band on the planet. radiohead dropped the ball.

    PhilosoraptorIris

i like elbow but radiohead is legendary

    Richard Head

comparing this to Radiohead? lol ... it's nice stuff man but, getting a little ahead of yourself there

    revol148

Radiohead "dropped the ball" when they released Kid A although I understand they have an uncritical fanbase who will buy pretty much anything they release.

    Timothy Dannenhoffer

joel horton Both Elbow and Radiohead are in my top 3
