Elbow - Dexter & Sinister Lyrics

And I don't know Jesus anymore
And an endless sleep is awaiting me
And I haven't finished yet
And I'm not a dog for the end of days
I'm a bird in a hurricane
With the heaviest heart jackhammering in me
And I don't know Jesus anymore

Unstuck and the whole archipelago is rocking like a suicide pedalo at a high tide
Blazing eyes hey how' d'ya keep your eyes ablaze
In these faith free hope free charity free days

Come back to the light
Come pull on the bullwhip around my heart
Take me to the sea
Let me peel and fade by the seaside
Where dead men go to die
And long standing affairs fizzle in the brine
And everybody stares with Eastwood eyes at the horizon

And I haven't finished yet
Loss is a part of life this long
But Dexter and Sinister?
I've the heaviest heart jackhammering in me
And I don't know Jesus anymore
And I don't know Jesus anymore

holy cow, this is an amazing song!

  2. N.... G....

    Fantastic album 👏👏👏🎶🎤🎉

  3. z.... K....

    Just brilliant

  4. J.... E....

The last two and half minutes simply speak to my soul.

    J.... E....

The shit part of the song

    J.... E....

    @Ster Chess sure...

  5. s.... w....

we`ve all been there!i just love it

  6. D.... R....

Wish they kept the opening 45 seconds or so on the album ...

  7. R.... A....

Hey, if you don't know Jesus, I can introduce you -- he's my neighbor's landscaper

  8. T.... D....

Anybody else love this song but felt pretty "meh" on the first few listens?

  9. M.... G....

    Unfuckingbelievable!

  10. A.... p....

Guitarists trying to play new songs:

"And I don't know Gsus any more"

  11. P.... J....

Another album of excellence and class from beginning to end. Hope to hear each song along with some of the oldies on April the 4th. Powder blue, Scattered black and whites, Rib cage, Fugitive hotel, or lets just make a night of it and play them all. Can't wait!

  12. h.... t....

The guitar line on 5:25 sounds pretty much like a direct reference to Grateful Dead's "Bird Song".
    Anybody with me on that?

    h.... t....

I was straight away thinking of the double solo guitar (+chorus and delay) on Mansun's Wide Open Space. I'll have a listen to your ref, now

  13. G.... H....

This is a really good song, but the only decent one on the album, imho. The rest is simply courting the squall recycled. Where are the background vocals and the violins? Now I know why, Jupp, their old drummer, left. Just my take on things. I wish Elbow all the best.

  14. E.... W....

I've always loved your music and lyrics too/ but these ones? ....mmm....." I DON'T KNOW JESUS ANYMORE....makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. Hey, it's all about freedom and you have the right to....use it well!

  15. G.... P....

Year made, what with Madonna’s Madame X masterpiece and now another masterpiece by Elbow, Thank you so much, brings me so much joy

  16. B.... K....

Wow. Can't say they're just going through the motions, although I'm not quite sure I like all of it. But when Jesca Hoop comes in.... man, that really is quite beautiful!

    B.... K....

Thanks, that was info I needed to know. And I agree; I was really enjoying the song and then the female vocal just smacked my face

  17. S.... Q....

Anxious to hear the last album of my favourite band... wasn't sure at the first minute of this track, but, finally I just love it all !!! Who is the female singing??? WOW !

  18. P.... B....

Who is the female singer at the end? She sounds awesome!

    P.... B....

I believe it's Jesca Hoop, phenomenal.

  19. s.... ....

Love this song, it made me buy the new album. And a couple of their other albums too. I'm a new fan!

    s.... ....

Asleep in the Back is a must listen, as is Cast of Thousands in my mind. Grounds for Divorce is another album with some absolute bangers. Everything in between was a little too clean cut for my tastes.

  20. A.... B....

This bassline would sound great as a melody sung by a thousand supporters while my fav club is leading 3:0.

  21. T.... A....

A very deep and haunting song, it gripped my ears and spoke to me while watching The Graham Norton Show. So different to the normal shallow fluff crowding the airwaves. It's nice to know there is still lyrical genius out there.

    T.... A....

Yeap, there is a one shitload of crap to wade through to find it though......

  22. L.... B....

Elbow were a boring man's Radiohead, but without the talent who copied Coldplay worst ballad cast offs ( Coldplay having been the first to rip off Radiohead's the bends ballads during the period straight after ok computer as Chris Martin thought the songs on ok computer were a bit out there for his tastes and preferred the bends) , so to sum up elbow a third rate Coldplay rip off who have Radiohead aspirations ( starsailor were better, and they were shit), this song and album ain't changing that?

  23. D.... M....

Elbow have consistenly released amazing music throughout their career! Surely one the best bands in the world, one of the best bands of all time!! Brilliant, they always deliver!

  24. R.... F....

He sounds very much like Peter Gabriel on this one.

    R.... F....

This was my first thought, too. Certainly not a bad thing.

    R.... F....

Yeah multi-tracked vocals at the octave and a harmony/melody heavily reminiscent of Mercy Street.

  25. L.... ....

If this is a return to Asleep in the Back I am all in for it! The debut is still Elbow's best album in my opinion.

  26. n.... r....

Simply brilliantly addictive, Elbow back on top form...I love the way it starts off all twinkly and ambient and then suddenly slams into that filthy distorted funk groove before that amazing turnaround halfway through...genius

  27. k.... ....

Discovering it only 3 months later! Shame. Planning to go to the concert in Milan on Nov 7th 🤔

  28. S.... E....

Sadly you haven't included us hear in Birmingham for the tour, but i love the new material ❤

  29. m.... ....

Late to the party, but brilliant!!!

  30. R.... C....

Back to their very very best. Edgy and raw. Up there with Bitten by the Tailfly

  31. P.... H....

faithless days... yet this gives faith o the knowing xx love it

  32. E.... E....

    Only 53,000 views?????

  33. &.... ....

" loss is a part of a life this long " Guy gets it , of course. This mans carves beauty and poetry from the everyday streets. A genius IMO.

  34. m.... ....

    The prog progenitors of music

  35. A.... W....

How am I only discovering this now?! Thank you KCRW.

  36. W.... G....

... and everybody stares with Eastwood eyes on the horizon... Great picture. I see Eastwood himself, I see Jim Carrey miming Eastwood, I see the dangerous threads at the horizon. Should I be afraid? Laugh?... Pictures in my mind...

  37. R.... P....

One of their best in years!

  38. G.... T....

Every track Elbow releases always sounds different to what come before and that why I love their music.

  39. R.... B....

    Fantastic bass line!

  40. G.... S....

    EARGASM!! 😍

  41. T.... ....

I have a funny feeling this next album is going to be their best........ Which is a fuck of a job.

  42. J.... ....

Music for the end time.darker than dark..post industrial grime, doves were heading in this direction..

    J.... ....

    Doves are back

  43. J.... W....

I think I like both of these singles more than anything off of little fictions. This might be their best album since Build a Rocket, Boys!

    J.... W....

I'm hoping on best since Seldom Seen Kid.

  44. m.... s....

And that's how you end a song! What an outro, extraordinary. So glad Elbow always deliver.

  45. S.... C....

    Brilliant 👍🏻

  46. D.... S....

    sounds like Peter Gabriel

  47. D.... B....

beautiful way to start an album... an example of artistic integrity. experimental.... so interesting...

  48. E.... ....

    Oh Lord! Divine!

  49. t.... l....

    Ephesians 6: 10.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15. and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people. 19. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20. for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

    2 Thessalonians 2: 9.
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10. and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12. and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

    l.... a....

    Indigo Hammer
So The Bible is a mental disorder according to you? You shit stained little satan seed,

    l.... a....

    l.... a....

    @ndigo Hammered
.You"re just a scowling, prissy brain death on legs, aren't you!!?!
We am gonna drive up and down your street all night, every night, now we found you!!!!!

  51. H.... D....

    Aaah, yes

  52. B.... A....

song should have ended at 4:20 mark... don't like the wailing after that

  53. S.... C....

It like Elbow have been hanging out with Ian Brown

  54. t.... 2....

They went all Motorpsycho + Floyd - sounds great.

  55. G.... M....

Unlike my own elbow, I can lick this.

    G.... M....

At least you know your arse from your elbow

  56. R.... C....

Its a mix of Peter Gabriel and the Stone Roses

  57. d.... ....

Return to form. Always like the prog in Elbow

  58. j.... ....

The last three minutes of this song sound like the experience of being at the Green Man festival on a sunny afternoon .

  59. M.... H....

Rhythm section of “Up” , with sensibilities of “So” but definitely a strong Gabriel vibe which is fine, (Gabriel’s influences come through as does everyone’s ) midsection sounds like a slight ode to Early Genesis

  60. T.... O....

    That Outro falsetto, tho....

  61. D.... ....

This isnt the same elbow as the 'pull those curtains wide' and 'I've been working on a cocktail' elbow right?

    D.... ....

    Oh fuck it is

  62. J.... ....

Left, and right in Latin, god bless fr jamie..

  63. J.... ....

And maybe some Snow White,my children..

  64. G.... M....

Absolute pile of crap from a terrible band

  65. J.... ....

Just believe, and you will be SAVED..and spared the fires of hell they are going to,no doubt..cracking song, methinks a bit of doves in there..I will pray for them,Father Jamie,S.J,.im sure good catholic boys, need some guidance, and God Bless the sky blues, because the Lord loves a winner..

  66. J.... ....

    Satan lives here..!

  67. R.... P....

Mojo definitely back; most excellent to
    hear!

  68. P.... R....

Still not sure on this one, after about 20 listens..... Hmmm...

  69. J.... S....

Thank you. First good song you've made in a decade. Big return to form from a band I'd frankly given up hope on. Hope the album is more of the same and less of that wistful anthem toss you've been numbing the masses with

    J.... S....

I think they will surprise us John!

  70. J.... N....

Wow. Best thing they have ever done.
    By far...........

  71. T.... S....

I’m looking forward to more songs like this, a blend of Aleep in the back, and Little Fictions

  72. T.... D....

Why do they make so many two songs in one songs? Not that it is necessarily a bad thing.

  73. t.... ....

    This is a masterpiece.

  74. S.... M....

    This is smart

  75. A.... T....

    Jesus I love this!!!!!!!

  76. P.... E....

This is not a return to original form. This is not a continuation of the divergence seen in Little Fictions. This is a continuation of Elbow's evolution throughout the decades. I love this song dearly because it captures the old and new sounds, whilst deliberating on the world's state of affairs. Jesca Hoop's feature is truly breathtaking as well. I cannot wait for the album. Been a fan since The Seldom Seen Kid, having listened to all of their music up-to-date. I'm forever grateful they're continuing to make music. My Number One band of all time. Have really helped me through the best and worst times. Peace and love, y'all.

  77. M.... M....

It reminds me of neat little rows

  78. s.... s....

I love the smooth melancholy at the last part.. we need more melancholy.. it suits his voice so well

  79. C.... C....

    Glorious, just glorious.

  80. g.... b....

    They're back! BANGER!

  81. c.... ....

A return to form I would say

  82. z.... ....

    Brilliant!!!

  83. b.... ....

Blowing away like some weeks ago in Lucca. Can't wait for the new album, it's going to be exciting!

  84. J.... E....

    Bravo Elbow, sublime.

  85. D.... B....

Fun fact: "Dexter & Sinister" is Latin for "Right & Left", which further supports the political intent of this song

    D.... B....

This truly is a great comment. Thanks.

  86. N.... A....

"Dexter & Sinister" debuted at #10 on the New Alternative 40 Chart this week!

  87. Z.... T....

Now that Guy's got all those flatulent, made-it-to-the-big-time love ballads out of his system, I think this is better. A return to form, but which form, exactly?

  88. B.... ....

Mr's Turner & Reeves are bringing all the things on this one ♥

  89. M.... R....

Highlights the need for a drummer....

    M.... R....

Can you not hear the drums?

    M.... R....

    @MonticArckeys I can hear a drum machine...

  90. T.... W....

Mich erinnern die Stimme von Guy Garvey und die Art, wie der Song aufgebaut ist, stark an Peter Gabriel, was gut ist. adohraufdieohren.blog

  91. T.... S....

New tracks, really exciting ones too, tour to be announced? Something to look forward to.

  92. C.... S....

Magnificent!! Elbow back to their very best with this epic.

  93. P.... J....

Can't wait to hear this live on a field in Somerset

  94. D.... J....

Love Elbow, but overtime Guy Garvey sings and make his lyrics I somehow need to pull out a dictionary on some of his words, he's very bright and genuine to write music that hits the soul!

  95. D.... C....

I am a glad kid tonight.

  96. S.... L....

LOVE!!!! .....and JESCA HOOP too! Oh, my soul!

  97. O.... ....

Yes! Everything's awful, and finally we have a song that captures this moment in the most bleak and beautiful way. Well done elboys, really looking forward to the album now.

  98. D.... H....

can't wait for the album, amazing as usual, Guy's voice is like silk love it

  99. i.... k....

back on form and been to long in waiting for new elbow material. This has the same feel as Grounds, but better. 21st century Beatles

  100. S.... W....

Peachy. Love it...back to form...less of the strings...more grit...Albert Finney would have loved it too !!!
