Edgar Winter - Keep Playin' That Rock And Roll Lyrics

Don't you know that I was sittin back in Texas
I was playing those rhythm and blues
And then I got a big offer
For more money than I could refuse
I had the chance to make it
Playing anything I wanted to play
But way back in my mind
You know I could hear the people say

Keep playing that rock and roll
Keep doing what you been told
Save your money up for when you get old
Got to keep playing that rock and roll

So I packed up and I made it up to New York
Where my brother was a great big star
Yeah he was doing funky music
Singing and playing guitar
Johnny was making the big time
Everything was going his way
But way back in my mind
You know I could hear the people say

Keep playing that rock and roll
Keep doing what you been told
Save your money up for when you get old
Got to keep playing that rock and roll

Don't you know that I've been doing lots of thinking
I've been trying hard to figure it out
But there's a certain kind of music, yeah
Got to make you jump and shout
Now you could call it commercial
If you want to be that way
But way back in my mind
You know I could hear the people say

Keep playing that rock and roll
Keep doing what you been told
Save your money up for when you get old
Got to keep playing that rock and roll

Oh you got to keep on playing
(You got to keep on playing)
Oh you got to keep on playing
(You got to keep on playing)
Oh you got to keep on playing
(You got to keep on playing)
Got to keep playing that rock and roll

Keep playing that rock and roll
Keep doing what you been told
Save your money up for when you get old
Got to keep playing that rock and roll
Rock and roll
Rock and roll
To satisfy my soul

  9. B.... M....

In 78 when Rick and Hartman left because there heads got to big look who filled in Scott Spear on bass and Al Ferrante from Madonna and Lauper and they didn't miss a beat coming out with Standing On Rock on of Edgars better albums and then even where asked to play on the best of..... Scott ended up being J ohnnys bassist since 99 till his untimely death RIP. And even wrote the song I'm a Bluesman that was nominated for a Grammy but lost out to some guy name Clapton in later years invited Johnyy and his band to play at the crossroads festival.. In 2014 Johnny finally got the Grammy he sure as hell deserve with the so um Setback and Scott Spray has cherished that Grammy ever since.... To play and make albums with both with brotha and go out on tour shows that Scott Spray has so much talent that people over look what he has accomplished with being I'm over 1000 Al um and has played with the likes of Slash, Felix Cavalier, Gene Cornish , Liberty DeVito, Max Weinberg, Ronnie Spector, Eddie Money Vinny Vincent , Ace n Peter of Kiss, Matt guitar Murphy, Conan Band Max Weiberg 7, Ray luziuer, Lets Paul

I saw this band back in 72 , and they were nothing less than terrific. I was always a huge Johnny Winter fan, and he was in rehab at the time for heroin addiction, but they were outstanding, and I agree, a live version of this song would be great!

  13. D.... W....

some bad ass players one this album!!!

  14. L.... P....

    absolute FINE band!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. M.... ....

One of the GREATEST R&B bands of all time. I wore this LP out !!

LOVED this in the early 70's....Hell, I still do!

  22. y.... t....

Why did social wank media only play half of tobacco road? Oh, of course, "the kids" today have small brains. Frig the kids, crawl under your rock & play Taylor pleaseexplain. This world is de-evolving......Taste the Whip. Mistress

    y.... t....

    ??????????

  23. J.... N....

    Great Song!
As a kid listening to this song I never knew the song told a story.
    Cool song and great beat!
    Brings back memories!

  24. R.... S....

one of the loudest concerts i ever attended and enjoyed was Edgar Winter, 1973 I think...Loud! at M.S.U.

    R.... S....

    montana?

  25. B.... ....

    keep playing yep

  26. P.... Z....

Rick Derringer is killing it on this tune. One of the greatest underrated Guitarist of all time.

  27. d.... ....

For those Derringer fans out there.. check out Rhapsody in Red from the CD, Derringer, Bogert and Appice in 2002. The version of Otis Redding's I Can't Turn You Loose was a great opener at the Apollo for the Roadwork double LP. Bobby Ramirez, drums died on the tour... RIP!

    d.... ....

    blood from a stone
    sweet evil
    man on the middle
    funky music
all songs from edgar winters roadwork.
in particula back in thr usa.
    walking the dog.
    somebody loan me a die.
i am a huge fan. derringer will always be at the top of any list i make

  28. S.... W....

How much did Bob Seger pay Edgar for this one?

    S.... W....

@Stuart Watson Different songs Stu. One sucks, and the other one doesn't. Care to guess which is which?

    S.... W....

+Steve Barker To be honest, I like both.

    S.... W....

    +knight wing Cool.

    S.... W....

I like both songs but it pisses me off that Seger's version is an obvious rip off and got more exposure.

  29. J.... S....

One of my all-time favorites.......played it as the lead guitar player in a band back in 1976........wish they had a live version of this, that would be fantastic.........

    J.... S....

@Jay Surles  there 'are' in fact LIVE versions...search the one with Ronnie Montrose and Chuck Ruff on some TV rock show...it's on here....fabulous!

    J.... S....

+Jay Surles Yes Jay, the Live Roadwork double LP has be one of the best live LPs ever made. I would rate it slightly higher than Wilson Pickett's Live in Philadelphia... and that is pulling hairs. The dueling vocal with Jerry "The Count"LaCroix has to be the reason. Save the Planet also has great harmonies between the two also... pity we don't here those anymore as it takes real talent and effort to pull it off. Jerry went on to sing for Blood Sweat & Tears, replacing David Clayton Thomas and then on to Rare Earth. What a pedigree... pinch me; OUCH.. LOOK OUT, JUMP BACK... I CAN'T STAND IT... OWW!

    J.... S....

Jay Surles By now you probably have seen there are a couple of live versions. Only redeeming thing about the web at my age. I can watch the great music we had back in the day. Rock on!

    J.... S....

Few years back but playing a cover band i appreciate your comment,,,sliding 6ths i think. What a great track.

  30. K.... G....

So good to hear the good ole music from Edgar Winter again. Have original album,no diamond needle to play it!

  31. S.... H....

great music! love both johnny and edgar!

  32. C.... S....

    entered Cashbox Dec 25, 1971

  33. W.... W....

I like to jump and shout to this song.

  34. G.... T....

This sound blew me away. I was 16; with 8 track in car; listening to White Trash and Roadwork at full volume.... and Lovin it. "Rock n Roll satisfy my soul". Thanks for posting.

  35. M.... H....

Was 14 when I bought this album...the horns sound changed my life!  I have the original copy framed and hanged next White Trash Roadwork

  36. h.... ....

loved this band…the first time I heard them was at the " Dario Palace" in Providence now called the PPac…they rocked…one of my first experiences of "rock and roll"  Rick Derringer was unbelievealbe….I went out and bought this album and still love it today.

  37. S.... W....

I never mentioned Old Time Rock n Roll.I only mentioned Bob Seeger. It seems that you Do think they sound similar.

  38. D.... H....

this song is NOTHING like "old time rock and roll".

    D.... H....

No it isn't. If anything it sounds more like "Katmandu"

  39. S.... W....

Technically, the first band I ever paid to see,as they were supporting Alice Cooper at the Alexandria Roller Arena in Virginia,in '71.
P.S. Is Bob Seeger paying royalties for this song?

  40. p.... ....

The whole package....every element of a great rhythm'blues outfit. You DO NOT get this tight unless you soak up a lot of sweat, booze and cigarettes in small blues joints.
    Those horns!!!

  41. C.... ....

cousin booby was the certainly one of the best--nickname the ghost--thanks for the kind words zman--ramirez family

  42. r.... ....

    Look in the info section.

  43. S.... L....

I don't see it mentioned anywhere here, but the other voice is Jerry La Croix.

  44. i.... ....

@RockstarRetired I hate to break it to you, but let me quote Edgar Winter himself (from"Gallagher, Marriott, Derringer & Trower" by Dan Muise): "[Rick} produced [White Trash], he played a lot of solos and things. Real signature things like "Keep Playing That Rock And Roll". That was Rick Derringer's solo."

    i.... ....

All these years and l did not know that was Rick
    Derringer on vocals.

  45. w.... ....

ONE OF THE BEST "FEEL GOOD "TUNES EVER RECORDED !!

  46. L.... B....

This song just puts me in a rock n roll mood!

  47. r.... ....

  50. J.... R....

  51. K.... L....

  52. b.... ....

These two could Mack truck any band, any where, anytime.

  53. c.... w....

  61. T.... M....

does anyone know the chords for guitar on this? I can't find them anywhere

  62. T.... ....

    Rick played for both brothers

  63. T.... ....

Rick played for both brothers and als Weird Al

  64. T.... ....

Rick played for both Johnny and Edgar and Weird Al
    geeze

  65. F.... ....

my last EW show was 2006. and hes still amazing.a nice guy too and thats rare. rock on Edgar! Im with that other guy on Rick. Floyd cuts his head any day.

  66. t.... ....

I always assumed this was a Rick Derringer guitar solo. There I go assuming again.

  67. D.... ....

BTW, This is Rick playing lead on the studio track.

  68. D.... ....

Floyd Radford was a true compliment to Johnny Winter and I actually liked his work with Johnny more than Rick's. With that said, Rick is a much much better guitarist than Floyd.

  69. A.... C....

Major production with brass, keyboards and vocal harmony ,once heard a local 3 piece band play this song and it rocked, need to convince the rest of my band to learn and play this song. sould to be the anthem for Rock & Roll !! Love this song !!

  70. A.... G....

    @viewthetube1234

"Light years better than Rick ever was."

    Put down the crack pipe.
That statement tells me everything I need to know about what you know about guitar.

  71. b.... g....

    in there prime

  72. g.... ....

If anyone can find the "King Biscuit Flower Hour" live version of this tune, please let me know. WNEW-FM used to air KBFH on Sunday nights. Edgar really played his ass off that night.

  73. F.... ....

aw man? I wore this out.thanks whoever! wonderful to have this. Lee.

  74. P.... ....

    i luv the treble.

commercial as always. uer song, i mean

    Paul

  75. p.... ....

Sounds like Rick D. on the solo

  76. h.... ....

It's so good to hear this song again. I bought this on 8-track years ago and along with the tape being broken, with 8-track players becoming obsulete I can enjoy this great song. Thank you so much for posting it.

  77. N.... M....

i could be wrong, but i believe Floyd Radford was the guitarist for this record.

  78. m.... ....

...this is "Groove 101" Love it! I'll be a fan forever! Listen to that bass line... and one of Derringer's best lead solos! The whole band is gangsta!

  79. R.... H....

I,v seen em at Miami,s Metro Zoo, Marathon Key/Knights Key , Hollywood,Fl,s Young circle and at least 5 outher South Florida Jam Zones. I have never been bored or disapointed at his shows. AND, theres allways plenty of teens and 20somethings gettin turned on to his tunes and they help " bring the house down " I,v seen him with his bro Jonnie several times also.

  80. M.... ....

This and Dying To Live are the stand out tracks....but then again like you said, this whole album rocks!!! Roadwork is a great album too!!!!

  81. F.... ....

Ah! great memories on this gem.thanks.
