Eddie Rabbitt - Song Of Ireland Lyrics

One, two, three, four

I remember Daddy playin' on the violin
Jigs and reels that he brought from Ireland
And I'm the first born in America, my friend

I have never been there but someday I'll take a trip
Across the ocean on a big long silver ship
Hear them sing those songs I learned from Mama's lips

I just close my eyes and I can almost see
Those shamrock hills and those forty shades of green
And the roots that tie me to a land I've never known
Are callin' me home
Are callin' me home

Sun shines through my window here in Tennessee
God sure made this a pretty place to be
But sometimes it just don't feel like home to me

So I close my eyes and I can almost see
Those shamrock hills and those forty shades of green
And the roots that tie me to a land I've never known
Are callin' me home
Are callin' me home
Are callin' me home

"Rabbitt" is a fairly common family name in Ireland. I have been to Ireland a few times and I have noticed that American Country music has been very popular there, since the 1950's. It is surprising how many Irish radio stations you can pull up on the internet that have a Country music format.

We learn something new every day. I never heard of the name Rabbitt in Ireland. The first time I heard that surname was when I discovered Eddies'( RIP' ) music. I think his father came from Donegall and the name may have been English?

@Ivan Mcaleese Both parents came from county Galway,Athenry and Connemara.

Awesome song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice slideshow too! For some reason the green, lush landscape seems to have a nice contrast with a cloudy sky in Ireland.

Love Eddie . . . born in Brooklyn, raised in East Orange NJ, made it big in Nashville, and then the world, but left us too soon.  He was the first artist I seen live.  Luckily I got to seem him twice.

  14. C.... ....

Dennis, it was on his "Variations" album. My mom had it on vinyl. My other favorite on that album is Kentucky Rain.

    C.... ....

+CCR Thank You. I used to have it on vinyl when it came out, but lost it in a move and couldn't remember. I've always remembered this song, forgot some of the words.

    C.... ....

I have a copy of Variations on vinyl. On an all tube system, this song along with all the other wonderful tunes on the album sound so bone-chillingly lifelike.

I also have a copy of the Horizon album as well.

AN ENGLISH POPE GAVE IRELAND TO AN ENGLISH KING

    BULL LAUDIBILETER

The Bull of Pope Adrian IV Empowering Henry II to Conquer Ireland. A.D. 1155
    (Lyttleton's "Life of Henry II.," vol. v. p. 371.)
Bishop Adrian, servant of the servants of God, sends to his dearest son in Christ, the illustrious king of the English, greeting and apostolic benediction. Laudably and profitably enough thy magnificence thinks of extending thy glorious name on earth, and of heaping up rewards of eternal felicity in Heaven, inasmuch as, like a good catholic prince, thou dost endeavour to enlarge the bounds of the church, to declare the truth of the Christian faith to ignorant and barbarous nations, and to extirpate the plants of evil from the field of the Lord. And, in order the better to perform this, thou dost ask the advice and favour of the apostolic see. In which work, the more lofty the counsel and the better the guidance by which thou dost proceed, so much more do we trust that, by God's help, thou wilt progress favourably in the same; for the reason that those things which have taken their rise from ardour of faith and love of religion are accustomed always to come to a good end and termination.
There is indeed no doubt, as thy Highness doth also acknowledge, that Ireland and all other islands which Christ the Sun of Righteousness has illumined, and which have received the doctrines of the Christian faith, belong to the jurisdiction of St. Peter and of the holy Roman Church. Wherefore, so much the more willingly do we grant to them that the right faith and the seed grateful to God may be planted in them, the more we perceive, by examining more strictly our conscience, that this will be required of us.
Thou hast signified to us, indeed, most beloved son in Christ, that thou dost desire to enter into the island of Ireland, in order to subject the people to the laws and to extirpate the vices that have there taken root, and that thou art willing to pay an annual pension to St. Peter of one penny from every house, and to preserve the rights of the churches in that land inviolate and entire. We, therefore, seconding with the favour it deserves thy pious and laudable desire, and granting a benignant assent to thy petition, are well pleased that, for the enlargement of the bounds of the church. for the restraint of vice, for the correction of morals and the introduction of virtues, for the advancement of the Christian religion, thou shouldst enter that island, and carry out there the things that look to the honour of God and to its own salvation. And may the people of that land receive thee with honour, and venerate thee as their master; provided always that the rights of the churches remain inviolate and entire, and saving to St. Peter and the holy Roman Church the annual pension of one penny from each house. If, therefore, thou dost see fit to complete what thou hast conceived in thy mind, strive to imbue that people with good morals, and bring it to pass, as well through thyself as through those whom thou dost know from their faith, doctrine, and course of life to be fit for such a work, that the church may there be adorned, the Christian religion planted and made to grow, and the things which pertain to the honour of God and to salvation be so ordered that thou may'st merit to obtain an abundant and lasting reward from God, and on earth a name glorious throughout the ages.

Body of Pope who financed King Billy is removed from Vatican tomb
The body of Pope Innocent XI has been removed from its tomb to make way for the body of Pope John Paul II.

Innocent XI was a member of a powerful moneylender family, and allegedly financed King William's expedition to take over Britain from the Catholic James II.

In 1694 King William gave a charter to establish the Bank of England. This is often regarded as one of the most important dates in the monetary history of the world. Nearly all countries in the world have adopted the system of money issued as debt which the Bank of England helped pioneer.

His reputation took a battering, however, when a husband-and-wife team of Italian novelists gained access to archives showing that his rich Odescalchi banking family helped to finance William of Orange. Francesco Sorti and Rita Monaldi wrote a 2002 historical thriller titled Imprimatur based on the documents that they discovered in the Rome state archives.

They maintain that the Odescalchis in effect financed the overthrow of England's last Catholic monarch, James II, by William of Orange in the 'Glorious Revolution' in 1688. A sum of 173,000 scudi -- equal to the Vatican's annual deficit -- was loaned to William in the 1660s through intermediaries in Venice. When Innocent XI became Pope, the couple said, he favoured William against the Catholic 'Sun King' of France, Louis XIV, because he wanted to get his money back. The loans helped William to invade England, forcing James II to flee to France.
