Eddie Kendricks - Goin' Up In Smoke Lyrics

Talked to my friend again today
Forty days and forty nights
It rained all over the world
To be exact
(To be exact)

Sinners played and disobeyed
The word coming down
That's a fact
(That's a fact)

Some people take it for a joke
They can't understand
They nailed Our Saviour to the cross
But he told them all
He'd rise again, rise again
I talked to my friend again today
This is what he had to say
You're going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
We're going up in smoke

I talked to my friend again today
This is what he had to say
You're going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke

I talked to my friend again today
Don't be afraid by what I say
Don't wait till Judgement Day
To start to pray'
Stop the hey! Killing now
We'll all have to go anyhow

Everyone's having tons of fun
Who's gonna take the blame?
He let His Son get close to earth
So we all go up
In bright of day
In bright of day

I talked to my friend again today
This is what he had to say
You're going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke

You're going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke
Oh, I talked to my friend today

Everybody's having tons of fun
Who's gonna take the blame?
He let His Son come to earth
So we all go up
In bright of day
In bright of day

I talked to my friend again today
This is what he had to say
You're going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke

You're going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke
I talked to my friend today

Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke

Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke

Going, going
Yeah, Sinners prayed, disobeyed
The word coming down

Going, ooh, yeah
Everyone's having tons of fun
Who's gonna take the blame?

Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
Going up in smoke
And we ain't got no hope
'Cause we're going up in smoke

  2. R.... S....

70s memories always in my heart and soul...riip ek

  3. G.... M....

    Amazing song i love it.

  4. p.... ....

The 12 inch version was a remix, which was unusual for Motown until 1979. They usually just stuck the LP mix on the 12 inch single. There's more flanging on the hi hat. Born Again 12inch also was remixed, and differed slightly from the LP.

  5. P.... w....

He was on Steve's imprint on Motown, correct?

    P.... w....

    Correct. The TAMLA® label.

  6. C.... 5....

TN . Vintage . Eddie Killin it and so is the band.

  7. c.... ....

This song is deep, just listen to the lyrics. We're living in the days of Noah.

  8. S.... P....

Eddie made two great albums in Philly with Norman Harris

  9. B.... Z....

Thanks for the great vinyl sample and HQ audio! Much appreciated! It's almost 42 years old and I STILL live this tune! We'll never have music and artistry like this again!

  10. K.... C....

THIS POWERFUL SONG & TRACK WAS RECORDED IN PHILLY IN THE 70'S AT SIGMA SOUND. THAT'S EARL YOUNG ON DRUMS & RON BAKER ON BASS, SETTING THE GROOVE, WITH NORMAN HARRIS ON GUITAR (HE ALSO WROTE ,ARRANGED & PRODUCED IT) . B-H-Y , AS THESE 3 WERE CALLED PLAYED ON MOSTLY ALL THE SALSOUL & PHILLY INTERNATIONAL HITS IN THAT ERA . THEY WERE THE "REAL SOUND OF PHILADELPHIA". LISTEN & ENJOY

    K.... C....

YEP, LOVE & ENJOY YOUR MIX ON THIS & ALL YOUR OTHER MIXES. THANKS FOR BRINGING OUT THE BEST OF THESE SONGS, WITH THE MANY DIFFERENT MUSICIANS & SOUNDS .

    K.... C....

Ken Cayre It's an honor to have your comments on my video, thanks too for the kind words but I can't rightly take credit for the mixes, I merely present these treasures that the true masters shared with the world.

    K.... C....

Ken Cayre I used to have more Salsoul titles posted, but sadly, the powers at Verse Music Group put an end to that.

    K.... C....

Not Nice. Re-Post them, They need to be heard. They are your Skilled Interpretations. (Perhaps they removed them when they sold the catalog to BMG a couple of years ago. ) Keep up the Good Work Slay.

    K.... C....

Ken Cayre This was long before the sale to BMG, they actually filed so many claims that YouTube axed my original channel rather than face a legal battle. Perhaps now that BMG controls things a repost may be in order. Have a Happy New Year!

  11. K.... C....

THIS GEM OF A TRACK IS WHEN A GREAT DETROIT MOTOWN ARTIST CAME TO PHILLY IN THE 70'S. NORMAN HARRIS & HIS PRODUCTION TEAM OF BAKER, HARRIS & YOUNG RECORDED THIS TRACK FOR EDDIE. THAT'S THE LEGENDARY EARL YOUNG ON DRUMS , RONNIE BAKER ON BASS & NORMAN ON GUITAR KICKED ASS ON THIS HARD DRIVING TRACK. NORMAN HARRIS ALSO WROTE & ARRANGED THIS SONG. EDDIE ALSO SANG HIS ASS OFF ON THIS GREAT SONG & TRACK. IT'S A CLASSIC. ENJOY!

  12. T.... Z....

It's never been easy to dance and hear a message within a song. Very few songs do this,... "everybody's having tons of fun but who's gonna take the blame, each day the sun gets close to us, soon we all will go up in burning flames! "

  13. K.... M....

A bygone era of music. Too bad...

  14. M.... C....

Daaaaaaamn! Somebody do a loop on that hot ass intro!

  15. B.... W....

Eddie kendricks solo career was severely slept on, as well as David Ruffins! You get a chance check out David's solo stuff too!!! RIP Eddie.

    B.... W....

Brent Williams i did David had some nice solo cuts for the Motown label

    B.... W....

That is true, Brent. Eddie Kendricks was underrated, and he was featured on Unsung. I saw the profile.

    B.... W....

This song should've been a top 40 pop hit.

  16. M.... C....

This song just keeps running thru mind

  17. T.... T....

    03:25 Nice. ;)

  18. S.... C....

  19. S.... C....

I believe it nuler war is at our door

  20. M.... D....

New to me  but I love it

  21. L.... R....

    Stilll True To This Day!!!

  22. k.... m....

classic jam. one of the best legends

  23. a.... o....

Prophecy,  FROM the Illuminati;  & St. Malachi.  'Beam me up,  Scotty.

  24. A.... L....

R.I,P Mr. Kendricks  you so rock. Yessssss my jam..........

  25. M.... C....

The intro does not sound Motown, it sounds more Philly International or Salsoul Orchestra. Whatever, it's a Baadass joint.

    M.... C....

@Mariell Clement This was from sigma sounds with norman harris producing so yes its philly/salsoul.

    M.... C....

qwertymanor Ok, because that intro was fire, no pun.

    M.... C....

A norman harris production with MFSB. The He's A Friend LP was also produced by the harris machine.

  26. J.... R....

    prophecy for the illuminati

  27. T.... T....

GREAT, great song !! Vinyl 'n soul !!

  28. m.... ....

This was fierce! Motown had one killer rhythm arrangement on this one! Work it! YES!

    m.... ....

mcbrion1951 This is actually produced in Philly under the Philly Sound. Eddie, although still on Motown, had two albums produced in Philly, using the same Philly producers that pushed that Philly sound. Yep. This was a jam though.

    m.... ....

Thanks, Queen! I'll have to look at my album for more nots on this!

    m.... ....

mcbrion1951 Lol you have a good ear for music too. that's why I love YouTube!!

  29. J.... S....

I always thought he did this for a movie soundtrack, maybe I was mistaken. But anyway, wow! The music of my youth, just so much substance. Its such a shame that music will never be that way again..

  30. S.... W....

    some heavy beat there!!!!

  31. E.... ....

This was my first song a played as a DJ. What a way to start!

    E.... ....

Nice.  My first song was "That Old Black Magic".

  32. D.... M....

This song was taken from the album "Going Up in Smoke". He also recorded two album, with the Philly Sound influence, this one and "He's A Friend" in 1976.

  33. r.... ....

Sounds like he wanted to join his bros after their success with "Enjoy Yourself" and "Show You The Way To Go"!

  34. S.... ....

@reggie44 Jermaine Jackson also cut a Philly side around '75 or '76 called "Good For The Gander" that remained in the vaults until it's appearance on the UK comp, "The Spirit of Philadelphia Vol. 1" in 2002. Well worth checkin' out.

  35. r.... ....

@sandrochatlos1 Actually, your guess is closer than you think. It's called a strobe light, to verify the exact speed of the turntable.

Believe it or not, the Eddie Kendricks album this song is taken from ("He's A Friend") is the only example I'm aware of that a Motown artist recorded in Philly, with the MFSB musicians doing their usual excellent job!

    r.... ....

Another Tidbit: The Temptations left Motown for Atlantic in the mid 70's. The group went into Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia and was produced by Baker, Harris & Young production team. Sadly, the album went nowhere.

  36. h.... ....

    never out of style
