Echo & The Bunnymen - Villiers Terrace Lyrics

I've been up to Villiers Terrace
To see what's a-happening
There's people rolling 'round on the carpet
Mixing up the medicine

I've been up to Villiers Terrace
I saw what's a-happening
People rolling 'round on the carpet
Biting wool and pulling string
You said people rolled on carpet
But I never thought they'd do those things

I've been up to Villiers Terrace
I've been in a daze for days
I drank some of the medici-i-i-ine
And I didn't like the taste

I've been up to Villiers Terrace
I've been in a daze for days
People rolling 'round on your carpet
Biting wool and pulling string
You said people rolled on carpet
But I never thought they'd do those things

Been up to Villiers Terrace
To see what's a-happening
People rolling 'round on the carpet
Passing 'round the medicine

Been up to Villiers Terrace
I saw what's a-happening
There's people rolling 'round on my carpet
Biting wool and pulling string
You said people rolled on carpet, boys
But I never thought they'd do those things

Bopsie waddy waddy
Shake your money
(Been down to Villiers Terrace.
Bopsie waddy waddy
Shake your money
(Been down to Villiers Terrace)...
Bopsie waddy waddy
Shake your money
(Been down to Villiers Terrace)...
Bopsie waddy waddy
Save your money
(Been down to Villiers Terrace)...

Echo & The Bunnymen Villiers Terrace Comments

I much prefer Crocodiles to the other albums. Some of Heaven up Here is great, but some of it has dated poorly and comes across as pompous. Porcupine sounds great, but with the exception of the title track and maybe a couple of others the material is inferior. Ocean Rain I dont get on with at all, although I'm sure it's many people's favourite.
Crocodiles though, is a perfect example of early 80s psych. When I was 13/14 I thought the cover was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.
In retrospect, he probably had the greatest influence on my hair/clothes of anyone. The girls I adored from afar, all 2 or 3 or 4 years older than me, adored him, so I stole whatever a 13 year old could reasonably get away with.

When I'd hear this listening to the album I used to think he was singing 'Minas Tirith' and it was a song about Lord of th Rings hahaha

    Immense. All versions.

THE LITTLE BABY YOU SEE IN A NATIVITY SCENE IS THE GENIUS BEHIND THIS SONG AND MANY 1000'S MORE IN ROCK AND NEW WAVE MUSIC RIGHT DOWN TO THE MOST ICONIC SONG BY LED ZEPPLIN "STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN". ALL THESE SONGS PEOPLE ADMIRED AND LOVED IS THE WORK OF GOD/CHRIST HIMSELF. TO HAVE PUT PROPHECY AND MESSAGES IN MODERN MUSIC WAS AN INCREDIBLE FEAT AND MAN HAD NO AWARENESS OF IT.
    Acts @-21New International Version (NIV)
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
    21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

McCulloch is credited with piano on about 4-5 EATB albums (but not on his solo ones)--I didn't think he played any instruments until he learned to play guitar just before EATB formed? Is he on the piano for this song?

  10. m.... r....

    very humble

  14. E.... S....

will never get a band like this again brilliant band

  15. H.... ....

Saw these boys, in Liverpool, autumn 1980. Fantastic.

  16. M.... L....

Superb track by a superb band

  17. C.... S....

I have listened to this song no less than 30 times in the last two days. The entire Crocodiles album is a gem!

  18. n.... ....

I am new to this. Who is Mr Echo? Who and what are his "Bunnymen?" Are they a popular 4 beat combo? They seem to have a particular "groove". Are they "down with the kids"? They seem to be a rather intense group of chaps. Is this so?

    n.... ....

@Neil Warwick Ha Ha...nice comment. Yes...a beat combo from Liverpool...much underrated...as I'm sure you know...first time I heard this I thought...''What is THIS??'' Loved 'em ever since.

    n.... ....

@Neil Warwick I saw them last november  here in Lima Peru, they are a great band.

    n.... ....

Echo was actually the name of their drum machine before they hired a real drummer.

    n.... ....

@Matthew McLaughlin That was just a story that Will Sargent made up in an interview.

  19. F.... M....

    Pura sonzeira!

  20. T.... H....

it says so much in a short space of time

  21. N.... ....

    GREATEST BAND

  22. d.... q....

    Bunnymen are gods.

  23. R.... ....

Heard this on John Peel. I wish the music scene was as exciting now as it was then. I don't mean they should still be playing punk (that's my generation's music and not for sharing!) but they could try being a bit more iconoclastic.

    R.... ....

    love love this band!

    R.... ....

The "gold" Peel Sessions version is superior to this, although this is a nice take.

    R.... ....

Hooray for John Peel RIP 😊💚

  24. S.... B....

Thee best band of the 80s' Its about an old peoples home,Genius Mac

    S.... B....

It's a combination of a story Ian McCullough's brother told him about Hitler supposedly rolling around on a carpet in his bunker because he was so annoyed and taking drugs in a "shooting gallery".

  25. T.... J....

    Love it, great memories!!

  26. B.... M....

can roll on my carpet, anytime.!

  27. n.... ....

if anyone rolled around on my carpet, I'd kick their ass.

    n.... ....

To avoid any troublesome carpet burns,a nice deep pile expanse of Axminster,or Wilton perhaps.

  28. e.... ....

Nah, none of the radio stations in Southern California play this band on the radio. None that I know of at least. This song just reminds me of how plastic and fake life can be in Los Angeles. Hence the lyrics "you said people roll on carpet but I never thought they'd do those things."

All in all I think this is a great song.

  29. n.... ....

cant get away from it on the radio?

  30. e.... ....

This song is the reason why I need to get out of California. Fuck.

  31. l.... ....

Crocodiles is one of the finest albums released in 1980.

  32. F.... ....

A great song reflecting what is going on in our time.

  33. c.... ....

I've been in a daze for days

  34. I.... ....

I think this song is about heroin and alcohol abuse.

  35. J.... H....

Do you all know Villiers Terrace was a pub in Liverpool city centre!!!!!!

    J.... H....

Thanks for the info ... I thought it was a night club.

  36. B.... M....

" I've been up to Bilious Terry's, to see what's a happenin'....there's people rolling round on the carpet, mixin' up the medicine..."

Still prefer my version of the lyrics ;p
