First time I ever heard this song wasn't until just a yr ago. I'm addicted. Always been a fan of EW&F, since the beginning

I attended a book signing of Phillip Bailey who was promoting his book some years back. He remarked that he had a problem with this song's lyrics. It had something to do with his being a devout Christian and lyrically somehow he felt this was not cool. He said that he and Maurice sometimes had differences over lyrical content.

The change or transition on 2:36 - 2:37 always felt to me as if a part was left out there. There should be an extended version of this track. The arrangement is awesome btw

Really feels like a song that somehow got left off I AM . Great song, production,arrangement and Maurice vocals are fantastic. Thus track has all the MW principles of production and arrangement, I'm really surprised it was not included on album. I love Rock That, but feel Diana was a better fit! Maybe MW was looking for an instrumental interlude and chose Rock That, but it is as clear,as day that MW was a musical genius who achieved perfection!

Had they replace this with “Can’t Let Go” or “Star” as was mentioned in the comment below, this would be a hit for sure !!!

Joe Yearby Maurice was also bringing in studio musicians to cut some of the tracks which didn’t sit well with the rest of the group.

Probably because in the days of vinyl, there wasn't enough room to put it on there. One of the good things about cd's for the artists was that cuts like these could be included w/o having to leave a song off.

I had all EWF albums and never heard this song. Maurice has a unique singing voice and this song, along with so many he produced, is proof of the genius he is/was.

SOURCES SAY THIS SONG WAS SUPPOSE TO BE ON THE ALBUM BUT WAS CUT.. IT DIDN'T MAKE THE ORIGINAL ALBUM BACK IN 1979. BUT IT SHOULD HAVE!!! EWF HAD MANY SONGS LIKE THIS THAT DID NOT MAKE IT ON TO CERTAIN ALBUMS. THIS IS WHY WE HEAR NEW TRACKS OVER THE YEARS THAT WE'VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE... I agree! I AM was EW&F Sargent Pepper, a masterpiece in every way. Diana fits in perfect with the album. Especially with You and I, Wait, Can't let go and let your feelings show. As much as I love Rock that, Diana was probably a better fit!

I have this album memorized and also have NEVER heard this song.  I had to be an added song in a later release.. I'm sticking to this story!! 

This is sad and hard to say;but I have been a EWF fan as far back as I remember and I have never heard this song until today. I have this album dont know how I missed this jam..I know like I said SAD lol

I have this song twice, one on EWF's Eternal Dance CD collection and the other on a EWF greatest hits CD my uncle burned for me. 

You missed it, not by any fault of yours, but because it didn't make the cut for the album.

It's about 40 years too late, but if it was up to me, this one would have made the cut.

This track was not released on the Original album, It never made it. Maurice felt it didn't fit in with the flow of the rest of the songs on the album.

Gobsmacked! The quality of these amazingly gifted artistes is breathtaking, literally. The only other talents of that glorious era that come close are Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Any other star who made regular top 20 hits were just good 'also rans' by comparison.

Simply just more of their brilliant overflow....

I like groups that pay attention to harmony, not just melody. Harmony is what gives a song its mood or "soul", and both Steely Dan and EW&F were not afraid to make gratuitous use of augmented 5th's, Min7flat5 chords etc, all used accordingly to create that hook to make it part of the song. Gino Vaneli is another pop song writer who exposed the average listener to the beauty of jazz harmony and syncopation(Brother to Brother, Evil Eye).

I feel like music back then (70s jazzy acts) had a lot more chord innovation. My favorite EWF songs have a lot of Maj7 chords followed by some Min6+9th I think.

No Powerlight are much more electronic than with intense drum machine,the reason why
this cut sound so similar to Powerlight sessions because this song were release when the whole band is at the absolute best!
Top of their game and nobody can touch them!

It is (The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire in 1978), but September was recorded during the I AM sessions (I AM was recorded in the summer of 1978) along with Love Music, Diana, Dirty & Were Do We Go From Here? and every other song that made the I AM album. I think the reason they put September out right away along with The Best Of is because SONY MUSIC (CBS at the time) wanted a hit record from them at the time and didn't want to wait or Marice White wanted to put a record out on his new label ARC.

This song (Diana) is absolutely mind boggling amazing! I can't believe why this wasn't included when they initially released I Am. As a fledgling young classical and rock guitarist back in the day, Earth Wind & Fire ( I Am) and Gino Vanelli's (Brother to Brother album) opened my mind and motivated me to venture into the world of jazz. "Can't Let Go" off this album is another tune that holds a special place in my psyche. EW&F is the Steely Dan of the R&B/Funk scene...very creative!!

Isn't September from the album released prior to I Am? I believe it was released around 1977-78 and I AM is from 1979 era?

What an amazing use of space 8 bars after 1:03. Just the rest for a whole bar kicks the song back down to a controllable lagging funk. Heavy stuff man, Love late 70's funk groove bands :)

Aqui no Brasil, este album de 1979 não tem esta música. É realmente do disco I Am esta faixa? Ela tem estilo em parte do Spirit de 1976 e Faces de 1980.

I was the liner notes on this cd and Maurice said that this did not make the album and he was right i dont remember this on the original release.Man it had to be hard to select songs for their albums,all of them sound good......incredible.

Thank you for posting this for the great folks who've been looking for this wonderful song by the Elements my friend. I brought a remastered copy of "I Am" back in 2003 w/"Diana" on it w/new liner notes. I love this song & it's a great feel good track all the way around. Love Andrew "Power" Woolfolk's sax solo at the end along w/the Phenix Horns doing the "Do." Keep posting my friend.

This is a great tune by the elements & should have been included on the American release of "I Am" as well! It MAKES NO SENSE that this & many other songs & older releases of AMERICAN groups & artists CAN'T BE FOUND IN AMERICA! The recording companies in this country need to get their heads out of their a---- & make older releases like this available HERE IN THE U.S.! I'm quite sure that would be a BIG money maker for them! More than they realize!

I was so lucky to get the edition of "I Am" with this song on it. This was definitely a big treat on an already great album. It would have been so awesome to hear the band play this song live.

There are other songs I wish could be found here - Frontline of Seduction, Autumn, Love is the Greatest Story, Welcome, and Writing on the Wall from Tocuh the World (not to be confused with Handwriting on the Wall.
