Earle, Steve - Six Days On The Road Lyrics
I pulled out of Pittsburgh rolling down the Eastern seaboard
I've got my diesel wound up and she's running like never before
There's a speed zone ahead on right and I ain't see a cop all night
Six days on the road and now I'm gonna make it home tonight
I take little white pills and my eyes are open wide
I just passed a "Gimmy" and a "White"
I've been smokin' everything in sight
Six days on the road and now I'm gonna make it home tonight
Well it seems like a month since I kissed my baby goodbye
And I can have a lot of women but I'm not like some other guys
I can find one to hold me tight
But I could never make believe it's alright
Six days on the road and now I'm gonna make it home tonight
Now the ICC's been a-checkin' on down the line
I'm a little overweight and my log book's way behind
Nothing bothers me tonight
I can dodge all them scales all right
Six days on the road and now I'm gonna make it home tonight
Well my rig's a little low, but that don't mean she's slow
Got the stacks blowin' fire and the smoke's blowing black as coal
My hometown's coming in sight
If you think I'm happy, you're right
Six days on the road and now I'm gonna make it home tonight

Earle, Steve Six Days On The Road Comments
This is what truck driving is all about. Woop woop
This is the most badass version of this song
Fine version but i will have to stick with the Flying Burrito Brothers version as the one.
JUST AS WELL THE DDA IS NOT AROUND OR THIS LOT WOULD BE IN THE POKEY
George Thorogood blows this rendition completely out of the water.
Steve is still the man without a doubt wanna the best song writers post Dylan era.
He looks like he's dropping a deuce each time he's singing. "Must pinch this loaf...."
Hillbilly hero.
You are stupendous Mr. Happy 😊 Friday 💥✌🏼🎶🎸🥁💎😎
No mention of original artist Dave Dudley? Rude!
Even though he never wrote it? If anything, kudos goes to Earl Green and Carl Montgomery for writing such a classic.
He also was not the first one to cover it.
Cool💥✌🏼🎸🎶👠❤️
Steve Earle is the real deal !one and only !!¡!!!
Jimmy Fartin Martin! Heard he lit a curtain on fire at the old Opry shooting a 6 ft flame out of ass
Can't nobody do it like Dave Dudley or Marty Stuart.
no soul
Prefer Taj Mahal or George Thorogoods version
This guy sucks ass!
The official song for messing with the seat.
T. Graham Brown hosting Nashville Now on TNN...
CANADIAN TRUCKER HERE, NOTHING BEATS THIS.
Steve is always playing in Canada, pretty much every year. I believe he loves coming to Canada. He's awesome, love his music
thorogood blows all other versions out of the water
Great song, great artist, but not such a great mix.
My God could he have made a more perfect imagine if a man? So handsome and his storys?! My favorite troubadour
People say he messed up on the dope here but he sounds perfect! Steve kicked the dopes ass!
real rebell no pretender
Bad Ass country song.....
Steve is JACKED UP here.
So what. This man has talent.
Steve's original recording of this song remains the best recording of this song,.
Johnny Reb the original is vy far the best
Kinda partial to Take Mahals version
wicked bass!
why would steve earle do it any way, this version is signature steve earle, one thing is 4 sure its steve earle's style, loosen up punters!
I love everything Steve does but his cover of Six Days drags too much. Not sure if it's not fast enough or the way they treat the rhythm..I hear a much busier bass pattern on this song . I cover it myself on piano and it's much more lively .
Tommy Haynes agree. Much prefer Burrito Bros version. The bass here is nearly amusical.
Tommy Haynes
It's hard to beat the Dave Dudley version!
For one thing, Dave does this song with a lighter touch...Steve and Company are kind of pounding it out....
I don't think it's a difference in tempo as much as a difference in feel....in the DD version the Bass player's walking, but he's got a bounce in his step!!
This is one of those songs that's so catchy...so much fun...but, Man....is it hard to do it justice!!
(The George Jones version of "The Race is On" is another one of those kind of songs)
This guy is awesome!! He should have been more famous
This man was the one
Steve was probably high here. I would love to know where that acoustic guitar is right now. #1 SE fan.
He would probably like to know as well, given that he pawned all his guitars during his drug-induced hiatus in the early 90s. I have heard he did get some back, but have never seen him playing this one since he returned.
Steve still has this guitar and regularly plays it. It was one that was rescued believe it or not by an ex-wife. He recorded his first post "vacation in the ghetto" album Train A Comin' with it.
Though the other commentor is correct in saying he pawned many of his guitars during that period.
Jeff - Thanks for that correction. I have seen him many times over the years, and have never seen him use it since his recovery (and have not seen a video of him with it, either), so I assumed it was one of the ones lost. He has hundreds, though!
Dang that lead guitarist and his vintage Tele has a great sound. Beautiful!
The Host on this show is T Graham Brown
Steve's an animal.
whoa ,....were studio sets for television that shitty looking, back then ? Ha , I dont remember it being that bad!
I adore Steve Earle... & love his mannerisms while performing... sexy bitch.... ♡
+kissmysass71 ... now ya talkin kissmya... good post!!
+wild cowboy ♡
he looks and sounds like a homolord
Dave Dudley. That's the only guy that does this song truck drivin style. I'm an expert. I've been on the road 37 years. This song come on in the middle of the night....nothing like it. I'm out.
+Mike Burke what does that mean "truck driving style"?
Search BR 549 6 Days on YouTube
Yea, I love everything Steve does but his cover of Six Days drags too much. Not sure if it's not fast enough or the way they treat the rhythm..I hear a much busier bass pattern on this song . I cover it myself on piano and it's much more lively .
Mike Burke I so agree...i'm also an expert... 26 year yrs on the road.
Nothing like hearing:
6 Days on the Road
ROLL On Big Mama
East Bound & Down
Teddy Bear
Freightliner Fever
Prisoner of the Hiway
I talked myself out of a ticket coming thru Goose Creek S.C.
a few yrs ago right before Christmas.
I had Roll On Big Mama playing on cd and got clocked doing 79 in a 65 mph zone.
I told the trooper I had that song playing and I wasn't paying attention to the speed limit.
He heard the song playing on my CD and said he hadn't heard it in along time and he could understand why I was speeding.
Super nice trooper...he said he grew up listening to the old classic country music with his dad.
Mike Burke Dunno about that. I grew up listening to Dave Dudleys version, and it's great, but then I heard the Battlefield Band's version - bluegrass bagpipes!
....one of the greasiest versions I've ever heard,....did he leave any Crisco for the rest o' the band,.........( gotta love it, though )
Impossible to do a bad version of this Dave CLASSIC...but this guy would be better if he wasn't trying SO hard to be a badass!! He'll never be Waylon or John Cash. Hell not even Merle, not especially one of my favorites, but he actually did hard time San Quentin style. In that context this guy is a joke.
+inquiry7 fuck you all day long
+Mike Mccoy "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." - Abraham Lincoln He could have been talking about............................YOU!!!!!!!
+inquiry7 I am done talking to you. If you ever meet a songwriter from Texas bring your dumbass shit, and duck. They will knock your ass out. Take your own advice and remain silent.
+Mike Mccoy Very impressive. You can write something besides "fuck you all day long." Your "threat" is logged and noted tuff guy!!!
+inquiry7 Could there be another Waylon or Johnny 20 years after? Doubt it.
what a badass. I remember watching Heartwarn Highways. damn. does time fly.
Christ I don't even have a band, and I can do a better version of this song doing Karaoke! Ad Lib!
!:of ALL the versions of this song ,Steve Earl is the WORST. I have listened to local musician's for more than 40 years, and I have never heard this song performed so bad. If you get thrown in the spotlight at least perform like you deserve it!
The Show was called "Nashville Now" hosted by Ralph Emery - who was an old time radio DJ. I was there in 1987 - great memories.
Does he stroke this or what?
You broke the damn seat... I don't believe it!
the best to you ALWAY"S
Thank you, Rich Baxter! A rare gem for sure!! : )
With a hat tip to Dave Dudley!
Singing my life!
Brilliance in motion
This version makes me remember why I hate Steve "I'm a commie" Earle.
Jesus was a communist too.
Too slow, should be faster like George Thorogood's version
Kid in the background going fuckin crazy
Is that Richard Bennett bouncing up and down in the background?
Real music. It's funny about all the politics around him...don't understand it really. He just seems a WAY better musician than all those people that hate him.
Taj does a great version of six days on the road
Steve looks kind of bad here, he was fighting that dope for so long, we are all just glad he made it through. God bless him.
He looks and sounds great as always.
RESPONSE SONG
CRYSTAL FYST channel 'six days' thanks
He's always been a liberal, just more subtle. THere are songs on the Copperhead Road album that call Reagan a snake-oil salesman and criticize Republican economic policies
Good for Steve then!
love this, too bad he is a flaming liberal now
Awesome song and awesome singing but the rhythm section is plodding along in an awkward-sounding way. I think the bass line is way too simplistic or something. They need to pick it up.
Dave Dudley is the original King of this song! Check it out!!
Depends on the size of the rodent - but even a capybara doesn't cover that much ground in a day.
But I love Jerry Reed most of all.......
One of my fav's, Earl. Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock, Steve Earl, Dwight Yaokum, Lil Wayne. Welcome to the new era: Rap, rock and country! I love em' all!
yepppers
STEVE
EARLE IS STILL THE BEST.
Love Steve!!!!! Thats T. Graham Brown Sittin in for Ralph Emery......
Steve Earle is awesome!!
Steve looks a wee bit effeminate in this one - in a butch kinda way
Check out Sawyer brown
YEAH steve earl and the dukes! love 'em!
WHEN I STARTED DRIVING WE HAD 220 CUMMINS WITH OUT TURBOS OR JAKE BRAKES ,MAN I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I GOT IN A 68 PETE WITH A 335 AND A 13 SPEED WITH A JAKE ...HEAVEN..THOSE DAM 4X4 TWIN STICKS WERE A LOTTA WORK
Isn't this show NASHVILLE NOW? It was hosted by Ralph Emery..think that sounds right..
luv SE and george thoroughgood does a great cover of this
looks a little like johhny depp
Damn good post, thank you
He was SO WASTED. LOVE him!
listen to john hutchinson fallen angels
all the haters ...lets see you do better ....when your that fried
@unclebobunclebob
And about 25 years after Dudley made it a hit. I like Parson's version, but Steve follows closer to Dudley's and Parson's was never well known. That is not to say that Steve doesn't know both versions.
Covered about 14 years after Gram Parsons and The Fallen Angels did it.
Bass player should have been on the back beat
It doesn't work on this song AT ALL
I like this shits just like it is....cause he's the real deal
LAME !!
I've got my 10/4 gears -n- Georgia Overdrive, takin' little white pills -n- my eyes are open wide, I jus' passed a Jimmy & a White, I've been smokin' everything in sight, Six Days On The Road -n- I'm gonna make it home tonight...
Ya, Go, Steve, Go, cuz you're makin' Dave Dudley -n- the rest of us real proud!!!
@icecreamforcrowhurst
I agree it might be better if it was sped up... But my guess is he already took too many pills (or more likely stuck it up his arm)... given the look in his eyes and that this was recorded when his abuse was really getting out of hand. There is a reason for the long sleeves, I suspect. Love him, but happy he is no longer doing the drugs, as they probably would have killed him.
i think sawyer brown had the best version. really the only one i'd known.
@Ralphsmongler
Agreed - this is not the best lineup of the Dukes - but Kling was a friend of Steve's, so I guess he chose loyalty over art..
@MrJackwraith
Dudley made it famous, but he didn't write it. It was two little known songwriters - Carl Montgomery and Earl Green - who wrote for Muscle Shoals studio.
@189wrstlr nope Earle does it for me
Damn !!! They kick ass!!!
That bassist is terrible.
@dawnjakeleah Thank you. It's too bad that the real talented people don't get the recognition they deserve. I saw him on stage recently with Roseann Cash and they were great together. I am glad he has stayed clean and continues to write great songs.
