Earle, Steve - Rex's Blues Lyrics

Ride the blue wind high and free
She'll lead you down through misery
Leave you low, come time to go
Alone and low as low can be

If I had a nickel I'd find a game
If I won a dollar I'd make it rain
If it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry
And lay me down dissatisfied

Legs to walk and thoughts to fly
Eyes to laugh and lips to cry
A restless tongue to classify
All born to grow and grown to die

So tell my baby I said so long
Tell my mother I did no wrong
Tell my brother to watch his own
And tell my friends to mourn me none

I'm chained upon the face of time
Feelin' full of foolish rhyme
There ain't no dark till something shines
I'm bound to leave this dark behind

Ride the blue wind high and free
She'll lead you down through misery
Leave you low, come time to go
Alone and low as low can be

Earle, Steve Rex's Blues Comments
  1. K.... E....

It's a great song but just another ode to heroin.

  2. R.... C....

The subtitled lyrics be are inaccurate, sux balls.

  3. P.... ....

    Song starts at 3:54

  4. G.... A....

Steve Earle and James Mcmurtry. Two SORELY under recognized Songwriters!

  5. c.... ....

    dude u suck

  6. G.... A....

    I absolutely love this guy!

  7. K.... ....

I remember when Steve used to sing more than he talked...

  8. B.... a....

I live in Glasgow, Scotland. Linked this to a friend in Colorado to which she replied "You do know there is a trail race from Crested Butte to Aspen" (we are both trail runners) - this August, I will journey across the ocean to pay my regards to Townes and Amigo. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Mr Earle for sharing this story.

  9. W.... W....

thanks. you convinced me to keep my horse.

  10. S.... T....

fucking love you bro I love townes and I'm keeping that legacy like he allowed you the luxuary of spending time and knowing him God has truly blessed you with this phenomenal life experience that's always been on you're side I call it fate Sincerely AKA the Kid..

  11. J.... P....

    Talkin' blues, Mr. Steve.

  12. M.... B....

A true troubadour in Townes's image. Peace. Out.

  13. H.... S....

    Artisticly rape

  14. T.... N....

Truly a moving video for me. I had the good fortune to see Steven multiple times on this tour b/c my brother was his tour manager. My brother died recently, so seeing this knowing that my brother was responsible for the sound/mixing at this gig is really special and moving. Making it even more significant is that I think I might now own the guitar Steve is playing in this video (if not the specific guitar, an identical make and model). Missing my brother, but thankful I have my memories and these videos...(i've met the blue dog, too!).

    T.... N....

Sorry about ur brother. What's the blue dog sir ?

  15. f.... ....

I always felt like Rex's Blues was a lullabye from Townes to Rex. It's just perfect and Steve Earle does it justice.

  16. L.... F....

    an anachronism for sure

  17. D.... H....

Does anyone have the version he did with Bright Eyes?I lost all My stuff so I'm trying to get it back.If so please email me at [email protected]

    D.... H....

That last line about "poetic license", what a gigantic cop out. Steve Earle should be embarrassed about that but he can be such a dick that he probably misses that entirely. Love him, just wish he was better.

His politics are fantastic. But own it. No crime saying "paris ain't my kind of town" but, wait, now that he has reinvented himself as a NY hipster with a beard, well, he must love paris. Shameful . Steve Earle ought to be above that, but unlike Townes, he wants to sell units. Steve Earle needs a temperance talk and a refresher course on the Wabash Cannonball.

  18. D.... S....

Best cover of this song thank you steve.

  19. M.... H....

I need to meet that man. Tell him how Townes is the greatest songwriter of all time

  20. K.... ....

    tabs/chords needed

    K.... ....

Kailjiin good luck. I quit trying

    K.... ....

    Capo 5, G C D. Lots of embellishments/hammer ons/pull offs.

  21. b.... j....

Steve keeps on keepin on .He speaks and sings and plays it all together into this that would make Townes proud of him

  22. A.... N....

Man, it's got to be hard to keep up playing that long without a break. What a performance and what a tribute to Townes. Fact, I have the butterfly from the Townes album tattooed on my left arm, and it's the only tattoo I have on that arm.

  23. B.... ....

Love this song and Steve's version of it.

  24. G.... R....

    Beautiful!! Best in the business

  25. J.... S....

Thanx to Townes now I am gonna do Herion. Life is Beautiful.

    J.... S....

thanks to Townes i no longer do heroin. When I wanna fix listening to Townes satisfies me.

  26. p.... w....

I'm glad Steve Earle is still rocking. He's one of the most special people playing authentic music still. I hope one day I get to meet you brother

    p.... w....

I had the great pleasure of meeting Steve Earle about 12 years ago in co Donegal Ireland. he was doing a gig in Jacksons hotel Ballybofey. He was a true gent and everything i always thought he would be.

    p.... w....

Good to see him looking healthy... When I met him he was strung out... Always been talented but he has a little Townes in him... Sad... Bob

  27. R.... ....

I heard Towns' version this weekend in my car and broke down crying. I didn't know what was happening - this song is just so beautiful and I lost it.

    R.... ....

+Raaron I love the Jack Elliot one with Nanci Griffith. What a song!

    R.... ....

Townes just hits that certain spot in your soul that just makes you cry when you listen to him sing

    R.... ....

Beautiful songs, Beautiful story, I love 'snow like low flying ghosts!'

    R.... ....

We, who know of these people, and are attracted by the talent are the blessed recipients.

    R.... ....

It's one of the saddest ever wrote

  28. w.... ....

I remember one winter, it's been a while ago too. If I had been on a mountain, it would have been snowing only on mine. Remember that winter well, unfortunately.

    w.... ....

    Snowin' on Raton

  29. J.... W....

    song starts at about 3:55.

    J.... W....

then you are missing the fucking point

  30. V.... b....

Sounds like someone with an infected larynx ate possum shit and regurgitated it through a bottomless blender.

    V.... b....

the addition of myself *slurping* would make the analogy far more affective and perhaps a little more precise.

    V.... b....

+Veinytriumphant barstard Kiss my goddamned ass

    V.... b....

@arthur ivester as in "affect", to be affected by something is to elicit an emotional response. Not an "effect", the operation of a linguistic device, but an "affect" - the "slurping" is an effect, but I'm referring to it's evocative quality, which is "affective"

    V.... b....

@arthur ivester I'm not talking about the state of force (of the slurping), but the consequent emotional disposition that is drawn forth in the reader.

    V.... b....

@arthur ivester do you get it Arthur, do you pal?

  31. M.... K....

Meh. I'm a huge TVZ fan, too raspy and this pickin' was not so good. That's what was so good about Townes. Nice tribute though.

  32. s.... ....

This kind of reminds me of the old days at Bobby Bridger performances, where the spoken word and the song just flowed in and out. Thanks to Steve for being the keeper of Townes' flame.

  33. H.... G....

Really GREAT SONG & AMAZING PERFORMANCE ;-)

btw: Somebody, who don`t like it, can "turn off" his ears !!!

  34. R.... R....

Cuts right to the bone. Immense!

  35. K.... ....

I heard this on "Leaves of grass" good movie n great song

  36. K.... C....

I have listened to this thousands of times...I play it all day or all week long sometimes...I know, I'm obscessed, but I can't help it...#LOVESTEVEEARLE
