Dylan, Bob - Romance In Durango Lyrics

Hot chilli peppers in the blistering sun
Dust on my face and my cape
Me and Magdalena on the run
I think this time we shall escape.

Sold my guitar to the baker's son
For a few crumbs and a place to hide
But I can get another one
And I'll play for Magdalena as we ride.

No llores mi querida
Dios nos vigila
Soon the horse will take us to Durango
Agarrame mi vida
Soon the desert will be gone
Soon you will be dancing the fandango.

Past the Aztec ruins and the ghosts of our people
Hoofbeats like castanets on stone
At night I dream of bells in the village steeple
Then I see the bloody face of Ramona.

Was it me that shot him down in the cantina
Was it my hand that held the gun ?
Come let us fly my Magdalena
The dogs are barking and what's done is done.

No llores mi querida
Dios nos vigila
Soon the horse will take us to Durango
Agarrame mi vida
Soon the desert will be gone
Soon you will be dancing the fandango.

At the corrida we'll sit in the shade
And watch the young torero stand alone
We'll drink tequila where our grandfathers stayed
When they rode with Villa into Torre6n.

Then the padre will recite the prayers of old
In the little church this side of town
I will wear new boots and an earring of gold
You'll shine with diamonds in your wedding gown.

The way is long but the end is near
Already the fiesta has begun
The face of God will appear
With His serpent eyes of obsidian.

No llores mi querida
Dios nos vigila
Soon the horse will take us to Durango
Agarrame mi vida
Soon the desert will be gone
Soon you will be dancing the fandango.

Was that the thunder that I heard
My head is vibrating, I feel a sharp pain
Come sit by me don't say a word
Oh can it be that I am slain ?

Quick, Magdalena, take my gun
Look up in the hills that flash of light
Aim well my little one
We may not make it through the night.

No llores mi querida
Dios nos vigila
Soon the horse will take us to Durango
Agarrame mi vida
Soon the desert will be gone
Soon you will be dancing the fandango.

If you shoot your own woman in the face- is that what they call a "Mexican Romance" or what? Can't even blame drugs or gangs for that one! But you'd probably stab her multiple times and/or strangle her since drugs and gangs aren't involved- unless you are the police itself.

This is so damn quaint. Like reducing my life in the country to Little House on the Prairie 200 years after the fact and in the wrong state entirely.

But I did manage to catch the bus to go to the airport after standing there waiting for the right bus for almost 45 minutes at the crack of dawn, and though my bags were thoroughly searched they weren't concerned about artifacts nor plant seeds- but found a Bic lighter they thought I shouldn't have in my carry-on bag at which point I almost lost a couple rings including an old silver Mexican one- but the guy whose bin I stuck it into was kind enough to give them back. The plane ride was relatively uneventful besides the pilot perhaps lacking some parking skills, decent vegetarian lasagna as an option for lunch, and me accidentally knocking my neighbor's free earphones given to him by the airlines into his drink when he got up to use the restroom. They used to tell you in case of an emergency you should duck down and hold onto your legs, but the space between the seat rows is so narrow, especially when people lean back their seats into your lap- I don't think many people could do that. I'm not a big person but I could barely get into my backpack at my feet for anything, and this is how I knocked my neighbor's earphone into his drink. They don't tell you to duck down and grab your legs anymore in an emergency- maybe it didn't save many lives, but the chances of survival if the shit really hits the fan are slim anyway.

Then when I got to Mexico I didn't declare the 2 kilos of Choclo seeds- I smuggled into the country because the sun was setting, and I still had to take the subway to get to my Airbnb downtown. I managed to buy a brand new SIM card from some guy in the subway for less than $3 luckily (who looked legit enough with a tiny stand made out of cardboard under the watchful eyes of the transit police) who even put the tiny card in my phone for me and made sure it worked so I could call the person I was staying with when I was outside thier building. My expensive unlocked cell phone just became super affordable over the course of this trip given the amount SIM cards and service costs in Latin America, and I wonder how I ever survived without one my first trip. I had a cell phone but it wouldn't work without a WiFi connection and I did a lot of prior proper planning, writing down directions and memorizing routes. And getting lost. Not anymore though.

I made it to the apartment before sundown, but I still hadn't eaten dinner, and decided to break one of my personal safety rules of not going out at night alone. Did you realize at least ten women are murdered in Mexico every day? Well I found out killing women was a big deal here in Mexico because I starting seeing all these police in riot gear- huge squadrons of them, some standing along buildings but some were marching, and more women police officers than I've seen in my entire life.

I went through a line of the police officers who then told people they couldn't cross the line, and then up the street came the feministas with banners. They were all against violence supposedly, but it wasn't a good feeling to be between the police and the screaming women. Then some marked ones were spray painting feminist slogans along the route as well as breaking anything they could and tearing down any walls they could too. Some grand marble monument to the nation in a park looked like someone took a giant piece of lipstick to it, after it was all over, but not 10 minutes passed by after the crowd marched to Zócalo and the National Palace and the city had pressure washers and an army of street sweepers cleaning up the mess made by the overly zealous feministas. I felt bad for some people who marched, fathers and mother's who had lost thier daughters, and sad to see violence- or at least destruction of property- in a protest against violence. "Violencia no es la respuesta!" I shouted to someone breaking a window in a stand on the roadside that had some advertising that said "Equality". No one heard me.

Cameras were all out and everyone waited for the police to fuck up. But they didn't. Girls started tearing down temporary walls around Bellas Artes palace and tear gas was unleashed. Some coughed, so ran, but most just kept on pestering the police and spray painting feminist a slogans which the people with the cameras loved. A white guy who looked Iike he was ready for a mosh pit twice the size of your average Latino male waited on the sidelines. He wanted the police to fuck up too.

Ad I walked down to Zocalo since the night was still young and the worst that had happened this far was inhaling some tear gas, and a lot of other people were walking from there still on the closed street. Right before the square the female police appeared in great numbers again, whole completely lined the front of the cathedral several deep and down a number of side streets- waiting they were- for the protesters to fuck up. Judging by the less than half filled Zócalo square the police outnumbered the protesters in the end- four to one probably at least. And there was some young lady screaming into the microphone, losing her voice and any cool she might have ever had. Women like that- particularly the combative ones tearing down walls, breaking windows and spray painting everywhere aren't the ones getting killed I concluded, and the people who agreed with her weren't the ones doing the killings.

But they said what they wanted to say. No one got arrested as far as I know. I saw an ambulance drive away with someone though I don't know what happened. No shots were fired, just tear gas. I also found one of my favorite pastelerías in the world before the shit hit the fan and while most shops closed early, I ate some good tacos al pastor at a place that was undaunted by the feministas. Why fight if you can taco about it? A big piece of meat being roasted by real flames in front of your eyes is hard to be angry at. The place was full of feministas when I was there at least. Instead of listening to speeches in the square or rallying against the police they were eating tacos like any true Mexican would- irregardless of sex, orientation political or otherwise, and religious beliefs.

But talk about a dangerous night out- my throat still hurts from the tear gas and I wasn't even close to it for very long. Crazed feministas. Who knew Mexico even had such a thing?
