Dylan, Bob - Rainy Day Woman # 12 & 35 Lyrics
Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good
They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone
But I would not feel so all alone
Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door
But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.
They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table
They'll stone ya when you are young and able
They'll stone ya and then they'll say "good luck"
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.
Well, They'll stone you and say that it's the end
Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again
They'll stone you when you're riding in your car
They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar
Yes, but I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.
Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone
They'll stone you when you are walking home
They'll stone you and then say you are brave
They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave
But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.

Dylan, Bob Rainy Day Woman # 12 & 35 Comments
I got"STONED"and I missed it !
The greatest album of the 60's. Your search is over.
I could never find Bob Dylan 'Everybody must get stoned' i didn't know it was called rainy day women # s whatever!!!
I never heard the dj announce the name of the song. So glad I finally found it!!!🙃🤩
I love the idea of using the word "stoned" with its two meanings. There're obviously two different ways of understanding this song and both of them complement each other: you can see this song as a way of saying "you can have a good time by getting high anytime and forget your everyday problems" but also as a way of saying "We having drugs because "they" (the police, the society ect) literally "stone" us with their violence and their intolerance: they're always there trying to destroy us, but it's ok because, us, young people, are together and forgetting our troubles due to this society with drugs." Just playing with the world "stoned" and its different meanings. The title goes in this sense too: the "woman" is the drug you take when your days are grey and sad (rainy days) and that you can't stand the authority outside trying to "stone" you all the time.
(I'm aware that most of Dylan's songs shouldn't be explained because their goal is not to make sense but to creat art, but I feel like this one isn't made as a huge nonsense, particularly because of the seriousness of the title)
Nice take, professor
Why is Doctor Who (Tom Baker version) in that image?
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaaa...

Everybody please rise, for the National Anthem of the United Arabic Empire.
Alcohol + pot = what I hope it feels like in the afterlife...part of the time. Because you need being sober and suffering for a while to = a contrast. Because if you are always high, you can't appreciate how getting high makes you feel good. https://www.google.com/search?q=Rock+Hall+Fan+Vote
Hey Bob, why don't you be a more smart? I think you can be it... someone must get stoned more than someone else. Ain't it a logic consequence of freedom and illicit behaviours? Ain't it?
When your state legalizes
THE NUTS
"If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be stoned" Leviticus 20,13
Always found hypocrite the language of Bible. Why they don't simply say: "Hey fag! Don't shake that ass under my nose. It's disgusting!" It's strict to the point, more sincere and it could have helped a lot with the fight against self censoring and fanatic politically correct.
Herzeleydt Diesentrüb I hope it’s Girl Scout cookies that’s a good strain.
@Clark Kent Hey Soup, aren't you tired of flying around with that tight suit, instead of firing some laser beam? How's your husbandry going?

I LOVE how stoned The Band sounds, in the background!
When I first heard this I didn't understand what getting stoned was.Fast forward 12 years and ok,everybody must get stoned.
One more week until I can smoke some decent weed again! I'm pretty excited about that and passing out in my quiet house in a quiet neighborhood on a quiet street in a quiet town where all the young people move away from as soon as they can. Course there are two young families right next door but they don't really count since they have children with actual bedtimes. Latin America lacks these for their children, no matter how old nor young.
I also almost lost an eye today- I bought some pulque at a Mexican bar and drank it for Thanksgiving instead of spending it with my family and to say "adios" to Latin America, but I only drank half of it last night. Today when I went to open the plastic water bottle they poured it into and start drinking at noon, I wasn't paying much attention to the build-up of pressure inside and the cap when loosened sounded like a gun shot and flew into the ceiling, just missing my face by an inch or two. Smoking weed is far less dangerous.
thank you
Its thanksgiving and i hope you all get stoned and have the munchies
Everybody must get stoned
Best line in the song:
"They're stone you and then they'll say, "Good luck!"
Many times in my life I have been yentzed over in one way or another, and after the yentzing the one who did the yentzign will wish me the best of luck.

Life got interesting when Bobby reached adolescence. He had been a quiet, introspective boy; Beatty says she expected him to become an English teacher. But at ten he started playing the guitar and soon Bob Dylan—he renamed himself for Dylan Thomas—was carrying his guitar from college campus to college campus, where he found both an audience and a reason to avoid going to high school. His mother was alternately angry and admiring. “There were lots of times when he was ready to come back to Minnesota,” Beatty recalls. “But he stuck with it. No one helped Bobby—they shut doors in his face, but no one helped him.” She watched his progress from afar—“and then, when he was ready for Carnegie Hall, he called us.” "'Everybody must get stoned' is like when you go against the tide....you might in different times find yourself in an unfortunate situation and so to do what you believe in sometimes.... some people they just take offence to that. You can look through history and find that people have taken offence to people who come out with a different viewpoint on things." "Dylan was 'being stoned' by audiences around the world for moving to Rock from Folk," wrote Muir, who also suggested the seemingly nonsensical verses of "Rainy Day

Bourbon Streeet crusin music
Why is it called Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 though?
12*35=420
Everybody must get stoned
@Jackson Hall Hmm was 420 used in that way in the 60's? At least could be a nice coincidence :p
@Melody Starr It's either an odd coincidence. Or Bob is a Mystic Time Traveler
@viviandarkbloom100 I would like to believe in the second option
Time travellin' Bob Dylan.

I love this song and I don't get stoned lol

They said they would, and they did. In Bible days if you got caught sinning you were to be stoned, who will cast the first stone?

The harmonica is off tune for about 90% of the song
That's the best part
Dylan responded to the controversy by announcing, during his May 27, 1966, performance at the Royal Albert Hall, London, "I never have and never will write a drug song."[8] According to Dylan critic Clinton Heylin, Dylan was determined to use a "fairly lame pun"—the idea of being physically stoned for committing a sin, as opposed to being stoned on "powerful medicine"—to avoid being banned on the radio. Given its Old Testament connotations, Heylin argued that the Salvation Army band backing becomes more appropriate. Heylin further suggested that the song's title is a Biblical reference, taken from the Book of Proverbs, "which contains a huge number of edicts for which one could genuinely get stoned". He suggested that the title "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" refers to chapter 27, verse 15 (in the King James Bible): "A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike."[1]
Dylan critic Andrew Muir suggested that the sense of paranoia suggested by the recurring phrase "they'll stone you" is a reference to the hostile reaction of Dylan's audience to his new sound. "Dylan was 'being stoned' by audiences around the world for moving to Rock from Folk," wrote Muir, who also suggested the seemingly nonsensical verses of "Rainy Day Women" can be heard as allusions to social and political conflicts in the United States. For Muir, "They’ll stone ya when you’re tryin’ to keep your seat" evokes the refusal of black people to move to the back of the busduring the civil rights struggle. For Muir, "They’ll stone you and then say you are brave / They’ll stone you when you are set down in your grave" reminds listeners that Dylan also wrote "Masters of War" and other "anti-militarism songs that mourned the waste of young men being sent off to be maimed or killed".[9]
Muir quoted a comment Dylan made to New York radio host Bob Fass in 1986: "'Everybody must get stoned' is like when you go against the tide....you might in different times find yourself in an unfortunate situation and so to do what you believe in sometimes.... some people they just take offence to that. You can look through history and find that people have taken offence to people who come out with a different viewpoint on things."[9]
Bullshit for straights, you bought it then? All these people who think they can interpret Dylan for others are who he meant with Ballad of a Thin Man, 'you know something's happening, but you don't know what it is, do you Mister Jones'. Muir was one of those strights, a poser, BHob was pestered with them constantly, asking inane questions, trying to pin him down. He often gave then nonsense answers just to screw with their little minds.
The marching band sounds drunk but he sounds stoned af
Actually rumour is they were all actually off their heads drunk and stoned when they recorded this
They were in character
When music was music!!!
Couple Dylan songs where I can tell he sniffed a fat line of coke before recording.
@insanityisawesome97 I think actual story is he got them stoned because he wanted them to SOUND stoned.
This one is for my dad!

Yeah, I am 70 now, lived thru all that and really don't remember much of the 60's and some of the 70's, because I WAS stoned, so technically I should only be 50, right ?
Yo did everything right. Enjoy and wait till heaven or till FBI knocks
I've always thought of this song about being ostracized
My dad got to hang out with Dylan in the studio while this song was being recorded. He was a pretty popular DJ back then. He and Bob were both so stoned when they shook hands that it took them three tries to get their hands together.
We're the same age.
@Andreia Reminiec Exactly. It's so obnoxious when people take it so literal.
"Everybody Must Get Stoned"
i have heart of stone make me warm again and good luck lucky luke you are owner of my heart
I AM SINGING IN THE RAIN WHAT GLORIOUS FFELOING I FELL HAPPY AGAIN thankyou gene
A woman and her daughter sought refuge from the rain in Dylan's studio as he was recording. Dylan asked how old they were. Therefore #12 & 35
That's interesting. I thought they were take numbers like Take #12 and Take #35.
How high you think these guys were when recording this song
Very very very high....lol

High as a karate kick.
All the band member were drunk or stoned ..bob told them they gonna make A song but before that everyone must get stoned
