Dylan, Bob - Positively 4th Street Lyrics
You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinning
You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt why then don't you show it
You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose and you know it
I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide what he don't know to begin with
You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you? Good luck"
But you don't mean it
When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it
No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I'd rob them
And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand it's not my problem
I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

This is simply an obnoxious attack by an ingrate upon the wonderful folkies who embraced and supported him in the Village.

I play this for my neighbours
I played this song every day before I went to work. Just to get pumped up. lol
Life lost in the streets of Los Angeles is another world. Look for me there, you won't find me
Everybody's talking about the lyrics only. But this song has a great melody with amazing musical arrangements too.
Organ work is superb. The days when an organ sounded like it does live. No phony synth stuff. Acoustic guitar is sweet.
I was 15 when Masterpieces came out in 83 and was instantly hooked. Jokerman came out the following year and then I saw him live in 85. Legend. Also saw him from a distance at prospect park Brooklyn around 2009. Flanked by security of course !

This is such a focused beam of pure scorn.
In "Bob Dylan Complete" is said that it's against the folkmovement after the scandal in Newport en in particular against Irwin Silber from the magazine Sing Out en Tom Paxton who both could'nt accept that a folksinger made such an "explosive entree" in de rockworld. It's also against peoples hypocrisie in general.
This sums up my stance
about hypocrisy in the human race.

I dedicate this song to my drunk self
This is the story of my adult life with my brother. I told him to listen to the song one day... really listen. We haven't spoken in at least a decade, and then it wasn't much.

I dedicate this song to all the Dickheads!!!
One of my all time Dylan favorites!
You can never ever go wrong with Bob Dylan!

Way back before Eminem there was Dylan. ...
The song of all time! - Tony Arioli
Should've been added to Blonde On Blonde and Rainy Day Women omitted .
I'd forgotten it had that organ that made Like a Rolling Stone so distinctive. Maybe why they didn't want it on the record with that song. I love both the songs.
Best songwriter ever. By several country miles.
One of the best of the best
Where would we be without the blessings of Bob Dylan's song in our lifetime? He was caustic, yes, but he wrote the words in a way that was close to his heart. He sang of the love and pain that happens to us in life. "I use to be among the crowd you're in with." He was always on the outside looking in. Maybe that's what he always thought. i saw him once in his 50s and he was mesmerizing. So cool and calm on stage, but then let the words flow and you knew you were in for one hell of a night.

I've listening Bob Dylan since the seventhies and I've always liked his songs and his personality. He is simply great!
this song is sad really, I feel this way with many people, they're overtaken by their pride, they're never fully genuine and they're fake because they're living up to an image, like Dylan is the strong character in this song, the people that he thought were his friends are all really insecure and lonely that is why they act the way they do. It's sort of a tragedy in a way

Songs that you don't mind the refrain repeating over and over because the lyrics are so captivating. Masterfully done, Bob.

He must have truly cared for the complete cunt he wrote this gem about cos it captures the sentiment amazingly well and I speak from experience! #Dylan4kingoftheworld x L4E x
yup a classic
Timeless
I still get the same thrill when this song comes on as I did as a teenager.
Supposedly written about his fans who booed him when he played Newport Folk Festival with electric guitar , bass, and organ which I think is electric too. What did he expect, a warm welcome? Folkies must have been diehards for acoustic music to have the gall or stupidity to boo Dylan.
me too! Today a friend went off and this came to mind
I hear that as soon as this song starts i go way back
"Yes, I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes. You'd know what a drag it is to see you." 😂😂😂😂 Love that part!!!
Duplicity exemplified.
I just last year sent this song to an old, overbearing, bullying pseudo-friend from our hippie days, used to be among the crowd I was in with, who never, in 50 years, ever shut up long enough for me to tell him to fuck off. Finally, he stumbled into my crosshairs.
Bob Singing In The Mirror....Tee Hee.
1 billion yikes!!!!
Aaaahhhh
a folk hero, poet laureate.
Songs without a chorus just weren't done much. Until Dylan.
A masterful wordsmith!!
The truth....is infinite.
If you are ever off a list top 30 songs ask were the other 270 are
This isn't about his fans or people disappointed in him - - this is definitely about someone specific. It seems very personal, and I can relate.
To my ex wife high school sweetie... what a piece of shit she turned out to be....and she would say..... what? Fuck it hurts....I stand in complete disbelief!!!!? What a drag it is to see you....
Reminds me of a bitch I knew.
if you've just had a break up, take a listen to this song & picture your ex having a shit or being sick; it's remarkable how quickly you will get over them.
All over the cool areas, village, shore towns, out of speakers on the street, along with "like a rollingstone,"in 66.
To my ex wife.........
Minnesota is my heart 💓 Bob Dylan
A FANTASTIC SONG BY DYLAN THANKS AND I MEAN IT LOL
Yes I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes and just for that one moment I could be you yes I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes you know what a drag it is to see you. Anyway, I was so much older then I'm younger than that now. And when I was down you just stood there grinning well do you take me for such a fool??? My all-time favorite singer Bob Dylan yeah, you're the one Bob, you're number one.
This song snowflakes are offended at
THIS version of this song IS VERY GOOD. OTHER performances of Positively 4th Street, especially the LIVE RECORDINGS, are TERRIBLE! I've owned the live recordings of Dylan and The Band, and AT BUDOKAN, and I didn't like either one, except for the songs that were written by The Band. I don't know if it's a case of nervousness on Dylans part, goodness knows it WOULD BE for me. But, everyone is different, we like what 'speaks to us', AND, we like different foods, games, books, tv shows, movies, colors, smells, sex, etc... So, I'm simply stating MY personal opinion... so don't get all pissy and bitchy with me, about this comment. THANX, AND HAVE A GREAT DAY!
The Bard---jewels of perfection
One ofBobby’s best! My best friend and I played this every Saturday night with our girls. They were beautiful and so is this song. A classic, for goodness sake! If only for “one moment”, we could get those days back!,
I was 14 when this album came out and while it’s hard to pick a favorite song from an album this great if I had to this would be the song. I was hanging out in Central Park and the village by then, what an amazing time to be young.
This song to me is about Gambling fuck those bookies and fuck those machines.... they've got a lot of nerve.....
Best song writer ever , does not have a grest singing Buts its his foice Please go on for ever bob.
Do not think this song was ever on an album (excluding greatest hits), think it was only released as a single. Either way, fantastic song.
About 45 years since I first heard this song. Still fresh.
Wonderful song.Very bittersweet
I wish Dylan would just say what he means and not mince words.
You don't want to see Dylan fired up at you
How can a 24-year-old write a song like this?
