Dylan, Bob - One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) Lyrics

I didn't mean to treat you so bad
You shouldn't take it so personal
I didn't mean to make you so sad
You just happened to be there, that's all
When I saw you say goodbye to your friends and smile
I thought that it was well understood
That you'd be comin' back in a little while
I didn't know that you were sayin' goodbye for good.

But sooner or later one of us must know
But you just did what you're supposed to do
Sooner or later one of us must know
That I really did try to get close to you.

I couldn't see what you could show me
Your scarf had kept your mouth well hid
I couldn't see how you could know me
But you said you knew me and I believed you did
When you whispered in my ear
And asked me if I was leavin' with you or her
I didn't realize just what I did hear
I didn't realize how young you were.

But sooner or later one of us must know
But you just doing what you're supposed to do
Sooner or later one of us must know
That I really did try to get close to you.

I couldn't see when it started snowin'
Your voice was all that I heard
I couldn't see where we were goin'
But you said you knew and I took your word
And then you told me later as I apologized
That you were just kiddin' me, you weren't really from the farm
And I told you, as you clawed out my eyes
That I never really meant to do you any harm.

But sooner or later one of us must know
But you just did what you're supposed to do
Sooner or later one of us must know
That I really did try to get close to you.

Dylan, Bob One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) Comments
  1. u.... ....

One great funny song!! Back before Dylan’s phony “Nashville Skyline” crap.

  2. J.... R....

i would guess that the vocals, the arrangements, the musicianship and the songs on on this album are his best recorded studio examples,..sine qua non. i mean the byrds blessed "mr tambourine man", and "you ain't goin' nowhere" but with "blonde on blonde," bob took over, the beatles knew, the stones knew, and they didn't even bother to try to cover these, they just tried to write their own...one of the most influential albums ever

  3. r.... c....

Missed the magnificence of that piano line throughout the song for about 40 years. Finally it clicked about 10 years ago and haven't got it out of my head since.

  4. m.... m....

Dylan's out of focus photo reflects the constant changes of images in the album I just couldn't take it in all at once a life time of listening and iam still blown away by the poetry. Roll on Bob.

  5. M.... S....

Oh... I love self fulfilling prophecy... they are so cute...

  6. B.... B....

    This song is gorgeous..

  9. B.... D....

The first grown up pop song and still one of the greatest.

  10. E.... B....

The instruments are a hinge out-of-tune, but, like, it's the FEELING, man!!!! Leave it! LOLOLOL!!!!!~E

  11. E.... B....

Well, we know where Steve Forbert got ROMEO'S TUNE......💎

  12. G.... S....

What a classic example of bobs music what a poet in his music yours sincerely Gary

  13. S.... N....

    A timeless classic

  14. E.... H....

Otherwise known as "Where Steve Forbert got 'Romeo's Tune' from."

  15. b.... ....

I know someone else already said this, but i'm shocked this didn't go higher on the charts in 1966. Bob was just so far ahead.

  16. B.... M....

The only time he heard the music in his head before writting it. And he did magic.

  17. H.... I....

How did ‘she’s your lover now’ not make this album ?

  18. H.... I....

This is simply fantastic. A real favourite.

  19. T.... T....

What a joke. TERRIBLE singer and stupid words like his big hit back in the 80s You Are So Beautiful. Just because he made a lot of money singing stupid songs about how unfair the world is to negroes he's supposed to be a big deal. Trump in 2020!!!!!!!! MAGA!!!!!!!!

  20. e.... l....

I saw him do this in concert. Still the best concert I have ever seen.

  21. d.... x....

    what can you say

  22. I.... B....

Weren't the drums way louder in the mix before?

  23. s.... j....

Amazon prime day! Bezos didn't mean to treat us so bad. We shouldn't take it so personal.

  24. .... ....

    Goooooooooooood very good

  25. A.... B....

The "I couldn't see" at 1"54 seems to be the same than the one at 3"24 ?

  26. S.... B....

    Oh Bob...Oh...Bob

    S.... B....

    Yeah...

  27. D.... ....

    Essa letra ♥️

  28. t.... ....

Classic Dylan Great lyrics but also great tune

  29. m.... ....

Oh man, what a genius. See all the songs that are sung by other artists. A homage.

  30. C.... A....

I feel like this is the part of the album where it really kicks in. After the long and amazing visions of Johanna, which is one of Dylan’s best songs but takes a while to appreciate completely, it strikes as one of the catchiest and most passionate songs in the album upon first listen.

This album is the best “popular music” piece ever made by far and it works as the platonic idea of a amazing album experience even stronger than Pink Floyd’s or The Beatles’ albums by a long shot in my opinion (even though both of them are amazing to).

  31. m.... z....

Kooper rocking out on the organ...really set the sound for the whole album...for the whole EXPLOSION!! only Garth could follow those footprints.

    m.... z....

👍😎👌😁👍 Kooper is tasty .. not too busy, just floating in the groove..

  32. C.... K....

One of us must know... both will never see the other side

  33. K.... T....

    Majestic Blonde on Blonde 🌻🌻

  34. T.... R....

Doesnt get any better.. Peak Dylan IMHO

  35. D.... ....

Brilliant number Robert...love Blonde on Blonde album.

  36. L.... T....

    Paul Griffin!!

    L.... T....

👍👌👍 Yep- so friggin great.. The entire band is fantastic. So loose
and on point - all live in the studio, dont think any overdubs on this at all.
    simply fantastic.

  37. S.... ....

This song is a million broken hearts

    S.... ....

    👍👌👍

  38. N.... F....

The comment I just made regarding this eye condition and my then address is a function of having to recall every address one ever lived at for the "premium bond" computer doyens for the sake of claiming prizes allotted to rightful owners this random number computer was affectionately known as "Ernie" during that time.
Thank you. & I wish all ads concerning medical conditions had better sound tracks

  39. N.... M....

    one of his best melodies

  40. T.... B....

I'm loving these preemptive strikes Bob. Thinker.

  41. T.... B....

About what? Aliens? God? The Monster of the Columbia River?

  42. F.... F....

how did this not go top ten in 1966

    F.... F....

because it was 10 years before its time, and no one had presented lyrics like this...in rock!?

    F.... F....

It was too long for the Deejays to play it. I was in my late teens and never heard it on the radio. When I bought the album I was amazed at this song and really the whole list.

    F.... F....

At least it was in the Top 120 lol (#119 on Hot 100)

    F.... F....

How did it not make Rolling Stone's top 500?

  43. .... ....

PS. that's a month plus the loan extensions!

  44. .... ....

The delays include 12000£ from 2011 up to date! What doctors and human trafficking and illusions?

    i.... a....

    A.... J....

Second only to the Beatles' White Album to me:)

    A.... J....

@Rémy Macca In my opinion , It is better than both White album and Rubber saul. Only Sgt: Pappers and Revolver can surpass this.

  49. m.... z....

just one song on a double album of GREAT songs...an incredible achievement. one mental nuke after another...this is the album that exploded whatever barriers were left.

  53. R.... A....

    👏👏👏👐

  54. I.... B....

After searching for a long long time, I finally found it thanks to my brother. This is the song of my childhood, when we were travelling with my family, we used to listen to Bob dylan's songs in the car, I specially enjoyed listening to this one <3

  55. A.... G....

Just brilliant. Al Kooper on organ. Paul Griffin on piano and the man himself on top form.

    A.... G....

    👍👌👍

    A.... G....

Paul's piano on this song is incredible. Would love to hear the iso audio track since it's buried in the mix at times.

    A.... G....

This song was actually recorded with The Band.
That’s Richard Manuel on Piano and Garth Hudson on organ.

    A.... G....

    so good! https://vimeo.com/250197606

  56. J.... P....

I read somewhere once that he said this was the sound he'd always hoped to recreate from his head. To me, the feel is better than Like a Rolling Stone, more epic and triumphant. But the lyrics don't match it. Probably what he wanted ha.

    J.... P....

    that's a really bright interpretation.

    J.... P....

Thanks for the kind words@John Breneman

    J.... P....

    welcome@John Phillips

  57. B.... S....

this a song for the magnificent Deja!!!!!!!! It was as if our song...she was young and ruled the town w her beauty........and younger than me...we were JUST FRIENDS so dont worry she was my step daughter! so the 'didnt realize how young u were" became our line! ..oh well......shes 44 now!!!! still the most beautiful 'girl' in amerika

    R.... W....

    Dude, we don't wanna know

    R.... W....

    @Mohammed Hanif asshole

    R.... W....

    @James get over yourself, mister.

    R.... W....

Mohammed Hanif clearly you are hurt, but it is delusional grandiosity to comment we instead of I. Who is we? Have you got a ferret in your hood?

    R.... W....

James because you seem empathetic I will say that calling out unnecessary rudeness, mean comments is good, but don’t do yourself a disservice by lowering your vibe. The idea is to raise the vibration and so as hard as some people make it,those of us who want less negativity around have to stay high vibe and bring others up by setting the example by communicating diplomatically and politely and this is much more effective than swearing at people. ✌🏻👁💜👁💙🕊💚😇♥️🕯❤️💓🌞🌈🌊🧜🏾‍♀️🐬💙🧬💙🎺💜❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💓💕🕯🌀

  59. F.... F....

    Beyond perfection.

  60. J.... M....

    That "thin wild mercury" sound!

    J.... M....

👍👌👍 Yep- this album still blows my mind.. Peak Dylan.

    J.... M....

    exactly

    J.... M....

love that description and dylan's affinity for the word mercury. did he come up with that description or you?

    J.... M....

    @Matt Casas his own words

  61. O.... E....

Magnificent ❣️ yes the organ but also that PIANO!
Dylan mixed the two to great effect in his music.

  62. t.... ....

Magnificent organ swirls by Al Kooper!

    t.... ....

and don't forget to mention Paul Griffin's magnificent piano work on this outstanding classic song.

    t.... ....

@Snowfire Sunwind Griffin was an undersung genius, much like Nicky Hopkins.

    t.... ....

@Snowfire Sunwind I never noticed the piano work in this until my left laptop speaker broke, listened to this song for years and never noticed just how good the piano part is! It's almost like, if the vocals weren't in, it would be a famous piano piece, didn't realise just how much he is going for it in this. Sounds like he's even playing in a different key at times, fantastic.

    t.... ....

@Snowfire Sunwind His piano work to me is the standout instrument here. It is fantastic. I have always loved this song.

    t.... ....

thorobred7 love the term you used “ swirls”

  63. B.... M....

loco como puede contener y luego desplegarse

  64. w.... ....

Thanks JR and crew for these gifts

  65. R.... S....

    ❤❤🇳🇵

  66. m.... z....

how GREAT is this song!!?? beyond anything else that's HOW GOOD! glad he gave up folk protest!!

    m.... z....

@MANTI CORE If you can say "he didn't evolve" with a straight face I don't understand at all. Many folkies had R&B influences including the Beatles, and Dylan actually reinvented himself after Newport when he introduced "folk rock" - it didn't go over well with everyone but die-hard fans like us know it's all in the evolution of an artist's work. Every "change" he experimented with was pure Dylan and completely unpredictable, I'd say. However, he never "gave up" those early protest tunes, he just spoke in a different genre of sound, and truly, he is a master at changing his style. Never gets stale.

    m.... z....

I stated he didn't evolve from being a Folk singer to Rhythm and Blues. He first entered the Folk scene in his university days but prior to that he had been in Rhythm and Blues bands.

    m.... z....

he didn`t give up but took in it

    m.... z....

i guess i'll never grow up; 72, and this is just the best stuff (for me) ever. period. all she wrote.

    m.... z....

These songs are more like existential crisis protest songs, as opposed to socio-political protest songs.

  67. A.... ....

What did we do for Bob to treat us so good with all these uploads?!

    A.... ....

@GrilledCheezeSammich We all are - but who can write like this? We do things when we're older that we shouldn't have to explain.

    A.... ....

'They made him an offer he couldn't refuse' :) I found this song on an eclectic
