Dylan, Bob - Making A Liar Out Of Me (Rehearsal) Lyrics
I tell people, you just going through changes
And that you're acquainted both with night and day
That your money's good and you just being courageous
On them burning bridges knowing your feet are made of clay
Well I say you won't be destroyed by your inventions
And that you really do have all the best intentions
But you're making a liar out of me
Well I say that you just young and self-tormented
But that deep down you understand
The hopes and fears and dreams of the discontented
That threaten now to overtake your promised land
Well I say you'd not sow discord among brothers
Nor drain a man of his integrity
That you remember the cries of orphans and their mothers
But you're making a liar out of me
Well I say that, that ain't flesh and blood you're drinking
In the wounded empire of your fool's paradise
With a light above your head forever blinking
Turning virgins into merchandise
That you must have been beautiful when you were living
You remind me of some old-time used-to-be
I say you can be trusted with the power you been given
But you're making a liar out of me
So many things so hard to say as you stumble
To take refuge in your offices of shame
As the earth beneath my feet begins to rumble
And your young men die for nothin', not even fame
I say that someday you'll begin to trust us
And that your conscience not been slain by conformity
That you stand up unafraid to believe in justice
But you're making a liar out of me
You're making a liar out of me
Well I can hear the sound of distant thunder
From an open window at the end of every hall
Now that you're gone I got to wonder
If you ever were here at all
I say you never sacrificed my children
To some false god of infidelity
And that it's not the Tower of Babel that you're building
But you're making a liar out of me
You're making a liar out of me
Well you're making a liar out of me

90 proof Shot of Love at heaven's gate
You can't always get what you want but if you try sometime you just might find you get what you need.
Beautiful song
Memory-holed off Spotify. Only this song. Rest of the album still there. Wonder why. (Wink)
Saved outtake?
No way this gem wasn’t released!
You aren't a liar, just ignorant and misinformed like most. Just because I argue with everything you say and think it is untrue doesn't mean you lie, though it is true God has been lying to you and others this entire time. There is a difference.
You remind me of some old-time used-to-be Bob.
The whole time I m listening I am interrupted by some program that wants me to listen advertising free: well in my industry that is how we make a living and some of those ads earn the money for musicians like you to have audiences like me
The Icon and the minstrel of the Beatnik period, but he still speaks and makes melody.
La solita canzone alla Dylan ma esiste di peggio
can't believe this was unreleased!
This sounds like it could fit on Street Legal.
Please post the original version of Mr. Tambourine Man.
Oh man....this is the first time I am hearing this and I am blown away.....wow.....Bob was certainly at a creative peak here!! Incredible!
What a fucking find. greatest, singer songwriter there will ever be.
The greatest song ever written, followed extremely closely by Angelina, by the same artist.
Love that 😯
MERCI A VOUS M VUE ET REVUE
Another fantastic listen, thanks
I got this extraordinary box set for my birthday this week. Thank you Bob.
I was on the fence about getting this box set...think I may have to.
sometimes I don't want to hear what anyone but Bob has to say <3
Shyra M i only listen to bob, the greatest there will ever be.
I hear ya, but at the same time, I do find some of the comments to be quite interesting and insightful. Perhaps for many of Dylan's songs, more than one interpretation can be true? On different levels? Is that possible...?
Dylan makes Jesus cool
I love this song
".... Now that you're gone Ive got to wonder If you were ever here at all ... "
Another ... great song of him !!!
Absolutely loving it. The best songwriter and vocalist to walk the earth.
you can't always get what you want
i love this song
Chords remind me of “ can’t always get what you want” by the stones...........???. Not that it matters a jot.
Wonderful
Like finding a missing piece of dead sea scroll parchment from the book of Bob
humorous comment, but true!
nice track....but it really sucks that its not on the 2 cd set of the new bootleg...its only on the big box set for 129$
yes, they need to remember some of us can't shell out over $100 for a big box
stolen from the past... Great Song!
Muito 10
sick bastard about Israel
no one in front no one beside and no one behind and dont follow leaders
So clearly this great song, "Making A Liar Out Of Me" is the most dramatic revelation among these 7 new songs which were released in the last week to stimulate interest in the “Trouble No More: The Bootleg Series Vol. 13” which comes out on November 3rd. First, we need to understand where this song came from. It is absolutely amazing that a great song like this can sit in the can for something like 35 years. Very similar to the song "Dreaming of You" that was recorded back in 1997 in the Daniel Lanois assisted Time Out Of Mind sessions and then a video comes out a full eleven years later in September of 2008 after the song was first recorded as something of a teaser for the excellent 2008 Album Tell-Tale Signs which is significantly subtitled: “Volume 8 of the Bootleg Series.” So for eleven years that great song, Dreaming of You was just sitting there in a vault somewhere. Kinda like a scene from the video that goes with that song…..the place…a garage out in the desert somewhere…where Harry Dean Stanton goes to do a little mixing of his Bob Dylan bootlegs. Now returning to Making a Liar Out of Me, several comments have noted that our new song has something similar to the Rolling Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want" going on. That resonance sounds right but the first thing we need to do to begin a proper interpretation of a song like this is to get all of the lyrics out on the table for careful dissection. Now mscosmiccat has kindly done that for us in one of the comments below. The first thing we notice is that each verse ends with the same refrain, "But you're making a liar out of me" so this indicates that everything that goes before the refrain.... is satire. So like reading Jonathan Swift or The ScrewTape Letters, to get the author's real meaning, the first thing we have to do is translate it into its opposite. So when the song says, "Your money's good" it really means, "Your money's no good" when it comes to the eternal matters which are under discussion during this period. And if I tell people that "I am just going through changes" the truth is that I am not really just going through changes... actually I was dead in trespasses in sin, and now I have been, according to another song from this era, "Saved by the Blood of the Lamb." You can pretend that your being courageous when you "try to stand on them burning bridges, knowing that your feet are made of clay," in other words, when you really have no safe place to stand where you will not be burned up because you know, in your heart of hearts, that you really have no protection from the promised Divine wrath to come with your "earthly = clay" feet. So now that I have provided you with the interpretive key, you can have the fun of figuring out the rest, just be careful not to let your conscience become "slain by conformity."
Thank you so.....
This song seems to be about religion.
I think this is one of his best Christian songs.
Genius! must be talking about the last days.
someone who write this and sing, now will be number 1
I guess you can't always get what you want
Oh Bob! Your words!!! and I just love your attitude!!! keep it up!!! 🌠🌎👉😎☮️🎶😍
"Unfinished", perhaps, more than "rehearsal". File alongside I'm Not There (1956), On A Rainy Afternoon, What Kind of Friend Is This?, Patty Gone to Laredo.
From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU
Sempre nel mio cuore, nella mia mente, nelle mie vene...

Great song:
Add this one to the ever increasing "why-didn't-he-ever-release-it? pile.
Bill Kitson The three Christian albums are good in their own right, but they could have been absolute masterpieces with a different song/take selection in a number of places
@Lying Dutchman They could have been a KILLER live album at the time, too - any of the spring 1980 stuff, instead of waiting until 2017.
lelsie'd hammond loves me
long live Dylan!

Thanks for sharing ☘️
another masterpiece.....maybe some so called politicians should listen. Relevant today just like when he wrote it in '80
Dylan is the best. Most hated and loved at the same time poet who ever existed.
People either "get" him and appreciate him, or, they don't. No gray area for Bob. I'm thankful to be able to listen and enjoy, while learning.
I tell people, you just going through changes
And that you're acquainted both with night and day
That your money's good and you just being courageous
On them burning bridges knowing your feet are made of clay
Well I say you won't be destroyed by your inventions

And that you really do have all the best intentions
But you're making a liar out of me

But that deep down you understand
The hopes and fears and dreams of the discontented
That threaten now to overtake your promised land

Harvey Weinstein
This is a sermon to fallen humanity in the here and now, descending into absolute depravity out of pride and self-deceit and greed. This is one of the songs where he doesn't put in the missing piece, namely Jesus. He was converted to an apocalyptic, fundamentalist Christian group called Grapevine and his brilliant apocalyptic insight found a funnel.
He's talking about the group he sold his soul to (if anyone doubts this I'll provide a link to a video of him admitting he sold his soul). They control most of the top musicians and politicians and he came to realise these people are evil and have bad intentions for humanity. He really wants to believe they stand for good but as the lyrics go 'you're making a liar out of me'
These freaks (Hollywood is an example) follow an ancient Babylonian religion which some would say is satanic as it often involves sacrificing children to gain entry to the upper power structure. They also promote and create victim groups within society to 'divide and conquer' - all of this can be found within the lyrics.
If I read my own comment 5 years ago I'd think it was written by a lunatic, but I can assure you I can back up all of this and provide evidence online. This world is run by the hidden hand.

Thank you!
I love it!!
The Greatest !!!
I'm really excited now...!
Why wouldn't I follow the Spiritual Man?
moving. very. Thank God for Bob. May he never say goodbye. love you Bob.
Everything must pass. Once Bobby crosses over to the other side, his music will become more powerful and useful for future generations.
You can't always get what you want :)
Brilliant, thank you Bob! Can't wait for this!!!!!!
Shame this track is only available on the ridiculously over-priced deluxe set...
This one isn't really that over priced, its pretty much $185 for 10 Cds and a Dvd. So its a little under $17 for each disc. The Cutting edge 1965-1966 was INSANELY overpriced.
Ben Williams typically the low priced set has been a best of if the pricier versions but this time only live tracks, not outtakes or rehearsals are on the two disc set
You can buy this song on Apple for just over a buck - that's what I did.
Or listen to it for the ridiculous price of free on You Tube.
So worth the money, bro. Don't even hesitate.
Mighty fine.
I'm sure that Bootleg Series vol. 13 will be awesome but I am really gutted to read in Clinton Heylin's latest book "Trouble In Mind" that despite Bob & Sony releasing 8 CDs / 1 DVD and a bonus double disc (if you order from bobdylan.com while stocks last) that the vinyl-only b-side "Trouble In Mind" is still not being made available on an 11 disc collection from the era. Instead of the 'master' version which has never been on an official CD before, BS 13 contains an earlier take "with Bob leading on the piano and Knopfler barely audible" -surely an 11 disc collection should have had room for 2 as well as "Let's Keep It Between Us"?
Ben Williams maybe when he dies...
That does seem odd... wonder what the trouble is?
And High Away! Where is High Away?!?!
I'm Disappointed 'let it be me' is not included on it
I'm disappointed that the other version of 'Caribbean Wind' that's floating around YouTube isn't on it.
I SUPER LOVE!!!!!
