Dylan, Bob - Dignity Lyrics

Fat man lookin’ in a blade of steel
Thin man lookin’ at his last meal
Hollow man lookin’ in a cotton field
For dignity

Wise man lookin’ in a blade of grass
Young man lookin’ in the shadows that pass
Poor man lookin’ through painted glass
For dignity

Somebody got murdered on New Year’s Eve
Somebody said dignity was the first to leave
I went into the city, went into the town
Went into the land of the midnight sun

Searchin’ high, searchin’ low
Searchin’ everywhere I know
Askin’ the cops wherever I go
Have you seen dignity?

Blind man breakin’ out of a trance
Puts both his hands in the pockets of chance
Hopin’ to find one circumstance
Of dignity

I went to the wedding of Mary Lou
She said, “I don’t want nobody see me talkin’ to you”
Said she could get killed if she told me what she knew
About dignity

I went down where the vultures feed
I would’ve gone deeper, but there wasn’t any need
Heard the tongues of angels and the tongues of men
Wasn’t any difference to me

Chilly wind sharp as a razor blade
House on fire, debts unpaid
Gonna stand at the window, gonna ask the maid
Have you seen dignity?

Drinkin’ man listens to the voice he hears
In a crowded room full of covered-up mirrors
Lookin’ into the lost forgotten years
For dignity

Met Prince Phillip at the home of the blues
Said he’d give me information if his name wasn’t used
He wanted money up front, said he was abused
By dignity

Footprints runnin’ ’cross the silver sand
Steps goin’ down into tattoo land
I met the sons of darkness and the sons of light
In the bordertowns of despair

Got no place to fade, got no coat
I’m on the rollin’ river in a jerkin’ boat
Tryin’ to read a note somebody wrote
About dignity

Sick man lookin’ for the doctor’s cure
Lookin’ at his hands for the lines that were
And into every masterpiece of literature
For dignity

Englishman stranded in the blackheart wind
Combin’ his hair back, his future looks thin
Bites the bullet and he looks within
For dignity

Someone showed me a picture and I just laughed
Dignity never been photographed
I went into the red, went into the black
Into the valley of dry bone dreams

So many roads, so much at stake
So many dead ends, I’m at the edge of the lake
Sometimes I wonder what it’s gonna take
To find dignity

Dignity was composed during a late night of 1989, as described by Bob Dylan in Chronicles Vol. 1, his memoir, and had the death of the gun Pete Marovich (1947-1988), basketball player of the New Orleans Jazz on reason for his inspiration. But not only the memory of the unfortunate player, whom the musician knew, the justification of his moment of glory in Dylanian musicology, other characters and places with more or less fortune, since not all names resisted until the end, paraded by the letter, at the time The wrong guy, Blanquito, the Crippled, the Virgin Mary, the Big Ben, Prince Philip, Mary Lou ...

  19. J.... R....

Such a great song. Leave it to Dylan to sum up the one thing that so many of us strive for with just one word. Dignity. And to address it as a noun...a person...a tangible thing,
is really, such a powerful metaphor. Only Dylan. Like so many other images he's painted and the understanding he has brought, I am left saying just one thing..."Only Dylan". The best.

" Got no place to fade, got no coat, I'm on a rolling river in a jerkin boat " The best poet to come out of rock and roll. You can listen to this in 50 years time and it will be even better, great art is timeless.

  40. M.... E....

Wise man lookin at a blade of grass...Dylan nod to Walt Whitman, two soulful poets!

  41. d.... ....

I think about this song a lot. I think I get why he didn't finish it and I guess the lyrics kind of say as much. Dignity isn't much of a reward for a hard life but it's all some of us are offered. Maybe this song is more about justice than dignity. Maybe it's about how neither of those things exist.

  42. E.... C....

    E.... C....

The police and the Civil Guard were only pawns in the game of Rajoy, Sáenz de Santamaría and the central government headed by the PP.

I put 'Dignity' among my Top 10 songs by Dylan and I believe my judgement is sound. ' Somebody got murdered on New Years Eve/ Somebody said dignity was the first to leave'.Thank you so much for putting up the lyrics in English and Spanish for a hearing-impaired man like me.

Dylan composed these after hearing about Pistol Pete Maravich death, one of my favourite basketball player. There's something written about this on his autobiography

Jajajja

    a.... m....

Sobre esa fecha toco por españa

    a.... m....

Dignity is one of my favourite songs of Dylan, my favourite version is included on The Greatest Hits volume 3, I guess. The one from 1994 to be exact. That to me is the way this song should sound. There are many good versions, including the ones on Tell Tale Signs and the one from MTV Unplugged, but my favourite is the one I mentioned.

    m.... t....

I prefer the piano version found on "Tell Tale Signs", but the electric versions of this song are marvelous too!
