Dusty Springfield - Just One Smile Lyrics

Can't I cry a little bit?
There's nobody to notice it
Can't I cry if I want to?
No-one cares

Why can't I pretend
That you'll love me again?
All I had has been taken from me
Now I cry tears that never become me

Just one smile means forgiving
Just one kiss, the hurt's all gone
Just one smile to make my life worth living
A little dream to build my world upon

How I wish I could say
All the things I want to say
If some way, you could see what's in my heart
Oh, baby

I don't ask for much
A look, a smile, a touch
Try to forget
Lord knows, I'm trying
It's so hard to forget
When your whole world you know is dying

Just one smile means forgiving
Just one kiss, the hurt's all gone
Just one smile to make my life worth living
A little dream to build my world upon

Just one smile please forgiving
Just one kiss, hurt's all gone
Just one smile to make my life worth living
A little dream to build my world upon
Just one smile

This song meant a lot to me some years ago. Brilliantly written by Randy Newman and beautifully performed by Dusty it said everything I felt then. It still moves me totally.

It was perfectly suited for Dusty's soulful voice.

OMG! Gene Pitney and I have been buddies since 1964. And... this is one of my most favorite of all Gene Pitney songs! But... he NEVER told me that (my secret OTHER favorite singer of all time) Dusty Springfield sang and recorded it, too! Both of them are gone from us forever now (Dusty in 1996? Gene in 2006), but Randy Newman really put together one amazing song with Just One Smile. The chords, the structure of the music -- no one thinks like that (except maybe Brian Wilson -- where's he going with THAT? we always used to ask!). I love every song ever recorded by Dusty Springfield (I flew to Australia in 2004 or 2005 just to see the Dusty stage play that presented her whole life!);, and... begged Gene in the late 1990's to add THIS SONG to his concert song list. Gene thought everyone had long forgotten "Just One Smile", but... we (his fans and friends) convinced him to toss it back in as the haunting melody and Gene's voice (darn near cries in that one!) are essential to this great Randy Newman composition. Randy -- you really know how to compose a song. From "I love L.A." to "Short People" and all the way to "Its a Jungle out there" (theme song of "Monk" TV show), Randy Newman knows how to put a song together! OK, enough of my 3 am. rambling!

Such a sexy, soulful, and sultry voice. There was nobody quite like Dusty Springfield......she could sing anything. Her recordings will always be remembered, and she will always be missed. I'm so thankful for the music of the 60's, and for singers like Dusty.
