Dunn, Ronnie - Cost Of Livin' Lyrics

Everythin' to know about me
Is written on this page
A number you can reach me
My social and my age

Yes, I served in the army
It's where I learned to shoot
Eighteen months in the desert
Pourin' sand out of my boots

No, I've never been convicted of a crime
I could start this job at any time

I got a strong back, steel toes
Rarely call in sick, a good truck
What I don't know I catch on real quick
I work weekends, if I have to, nights and holidays

Give you forty and then some
Whatever it takes
Three dollars and change at the pump
Cost of livin's high and goin' up

I put Robert down as a reference
He's known me all my life
We attend the same church
He introduced me to my wife

Gave my last job everythin'
Before it headed south
Took the shoes off of my children's feet
The food out of their mouths

Yesterday my folks offered to help
But they're barely gettin' by themselves

I got a strong back, steel toes
I rarely call in sick, a good truck
What I don't know I catch on real quick
I work weekends, if I have to, nights and holidays

Give you forty and then some
Whatever it takes
Three dollars and change at the pump
Cost of livin's high and goin' up

I'm sure a hundred others have applied
Rumor has it you're only takin' five

I got a strong back, steel toes
I'm handy with a wrench
There's nothin' I can't drive
Nothin' I can't fix

I work sunup to sundown
Ain't too proud to sweep the floors
Bank has started callin'
And the wolves are at my door

Three dollars and change at the pump
Cost of livin's high and goin' up

I was 23 and walked into a bowling alley to apply for a job when the manager and associate were trying to replace a belt on a vacuum cleaner! I said let me have a look at that... and he did while giving me a crossed look in his eyes! I fixed it in a few moments and was offered a job right there on the spot as maintenance person fixing and maintaining the bowling pin racks in the back of the alleys.

  5. N.... R....

I remember when this song came out. I was in the military and even then they were trying to boot people in an attempt to "save money". Thankfully I made it to retirement, but I felt so bad for those who lost their jobs, homes, etc. during the recession. Another good song to listen to that relates to this is John Rich's "Shutting Detroit Down".

The pension scandal getting ready to blow up will be the worst " depression" this country ever seen and while our congress spends its time and our money on BS and the American people sit by they know this s__t getting ready to go down!

  39. G.... D....

Let's not forget what the words are all about what this country was built on the hard working Americans not the ones living off government aid

  40. E.... 1....

My town suffered from the same type of scenario at the beginningof the early 2000’s when the ladder factory went out of business and dried the town up ever since then not much business has came to the town and most businesses are gone and people are leaving and homes that are for sale are getting bought up by Amish people and it’s just sad

  41. M.... L....

Yea I'm served this country and I have PTSD really bad this is a beautiful song but sad at the same time I have to cry sometimes

  42. O.... e....

That’s Democrats for you. Life was hard the last 25 or so years. Now things are looking up for my children. Those that are middle class in the last three decades know what I’m saying. We have something good going for us now. Don’t let it be taken away! 💯👍

  52. J.... N....

I lost my dad on Thursday. 11-21-19..I travelled and worked with my dad for a construction company for years. Early on one of our bosses loved country and I heard this song come on riding with him and my dad once...it was the first country song I ever liked and I liked it because it reminded me of my dad. The hardest working, most intelligent and handy man I’ve ever known. My best friend and hero I will miss him forever. Cherish your dads people. Let them know. My dad was 53 and died a horrible death of cancer. The last year I’ve been by his bedside 24/7. In the beginning as a son and best friend wanting to be with my hero. In the end as those things but also his caregiver. Luckily I don’t have kids and was able to do this, and as hard as it was I’d do it a hundred thousand more times to have him again. Idk why I’m writing all this...I just don’t know what to do with myself

  53. R.... P....

Still listening!!!!! Give me goosebumps every time!!!!!

  54. b.... ....

My grandfather retired from Kelly Springfield rubber in Cumberland Md The town went down hill.

It’s sad but it’s true. The people have forgotten who makes this economy / country. “WE THE PEOPLE...”

  56. E.... B....

I am a 25 year old woman working production. Definitely a male dominated industry. But, I am feeding my country and I am damn proud of what I do. #strongbackandsteeltoes

    E.... B....

    E.... B....

  60. T.... W....

    2019 🇺🇸 📅

  61. N.... M....

Yeah America your system seems to be broken somehow! Dunno how it went wrong or at which point in time but i guess the everybody could make it at some point mentality didn‘t work out/pay.
I‘m in no means a US hater or what, just makes me sad to see as a human being n i know in europe it mostly seems to be more social.

There‘re so many things like opioid crisis, working two jobs, health care isn’t available for everybody, school shootings, poverty, racial problems, obesity… on the other hand you see super rich People, fantastic cities, great expertise in medical treatment, great sport leagues the whole world adores you for, innovation from like silicon Valley, NASA, Hollywood, the greatest military the world has ever seen.
Doesn‘t has to be like that in my opinion you should find a way all these things could meet each other in the middle in yall know what i‘m saying

  62. C.... H....

Thanks to Obama plants all across the country closed during that time

  63. P.... M....

Watching the crook in the white house making millions off of tax payers, while destroying what he claimed he would fix. Lmao at the fools who actually believe the con man trump. Not only did he fool you into voting for him, he made you turn your backs on our Constitution also. How easily the uneducated are played for suckers and fools. Auto plants closing, steel plants closing, and Moscow mitch is laughing all the way to the bank with his new russian backed steel plant. Lol way to go middle of america. You can't feel bad for those who buy from a snake oil salesman.

  88. D.... S....

Let me make this very clear. Do not lick the boot, that kicks you!

People call them "job creators" like some kind of benevolent deity. Wake Up!

The corporate Democrats lick the boot.
The Republicans deep throat the boot.

It's time to end plutocracy! Workers don't decide to outsource jobs. Corporate bosses do. We bail out GM, they make record profits and now they want more from their workers. I say we put the workers in charge, and the workers elect the board of directors of these corporations. I say more democracy, and democracy in the work place. They call me a socialist, well maybe you are too, you just don't know it yet. Maybe that tire plant should have become a worker owned cooperative, instead of closing it, finance the cooperative! But we stand and watch our people get mistreated, and our leaders reinforce our "nobody-ness" because is serves them.

  89. M.... G....

Broke my back in 2013 when I fell out of a bucket truck cutting trees leaving me paralysed. I had nothing but my wife and kids at home we went thru hell but we making it. I was 33 years old then 38 now. This song makes me cry every time now wishing things were like they used to be. To every man or woman out there making it the hard way RESPECT& LOVE
