Dubliners, The - The Parting Glass Lyrics

Of all money that ever I had
I spent it in good company
and of all the harm that ever I done
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of whit
to memory now I can't recall
so fill to me the parting glass
goodnight and joy be with you all
of all the comrade that ever i had
they are sorry for my going away
and of all the sweethearts that ever I had
They would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
that I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and softly call
Goodnight and joy be with you all
If I had money enough to spend
and leisure time to sit awhile
there is a fairmaid in this town
that sorely has my heart beguiled
her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
then fill to me the parting glass
goodnight and joy be with you all.

I love you dad, may you rest in peace. I miss you so much, there is nothing I can type to express my feelings. I dont believe I'm awake right now. Please watch over me, I saw your shooting star when talking to your brother. I know you're up there. We all love you... 11/9/19

Had the pleasure and the honor to play and tour with him throughout Italy more than 20 years ago, together with piano player Antonio Breschi. I found out a real gentleman and a giant artist. It was a pleasure to talk with him, he was also a great storyteller. I will always keep those moments in my heart. Thank you so much Ronnie!

  11. S.... H....

This song is about dying and and old fashioned wake were after the women cleaned the body and dressed it they put a glass in the dearly departed"s hand. That corredt?

  12. 8.... 1....

hey ron . JUST B4 YE GO we march 4ward n just a 4 ye go we march on .still you go on ..............

  13. M.... C....

I'm a yank, but I grew up on Ronnie, Luke, Ciarán and the gang. Grew up on Dubs music, Frank Harte, Ewan McColl, AL Lloyd, Christie Moore, Hank Williams, and lots of old-time country.

Miss all these fellas, so much. Luke and Ronnie especially, then most recently we lost Eamonn Campbell, underrated later member of the group. Many people don't even know that it was because of Eamonn that the Dubliners saw a resurgence in their music during the 1980s with their collaboration with the Pogues and Shane Macgowan. God rest all your souls, gentlemen. Memory Eternal

  14. T.... L....

A nice mandolin accompaniment on this. Is that Banjo Barney yet again doing the plucking? Presumingly it' s John S on tin whistle...

  21. K.... A....

Played at my Father's funeral, almost ironic how it represented his actual life. He was a master musician himself and a big fan of the Dubliners. Brings a lump to my throat

  22. O.... K....

If I ever passaway don't sing this song.

  23. K.... D....

Centuries of Irish history culminated in the birth of artists such as Ronnie Drew; it makes you think, that perhaps all that history, the good and the bad alike, were worth something after all.

Ronnie drew a legend top class song from a top class man no 1 up ta Ronnie boy

  49. S.... D....

I'm a Dubliner, out in Swords town. Maybe i'm old fashioned, traditionalist, but Ronnie and the old crew, represent a face of Dublin I no longer recognise. If I want to see Ireland, real Ireland, I go to the west. I'll always be a Dubliner, but my city has evolved too fast for me, so much it doesn't sometimes even feel like Ireland.

    S.... D....

    You're not wrong brother

    S.... D....

Same as London and Glasgow and Paris? Tis a damn shame!

  50. F.... M....

Never will there be another voice like Joseph "Ronnie" Drew. I grew up listening to the tales in the gruff Irish voice, god I miss this man! RIP Ronnie you legend!

  54. C.... M....

  55. M.... C....

good night and joy be too you all

  56. B.... ....

    what a legend

  57. B.... ....

There was something about Ronnie, something more than the incredible voice, the phrasing and timing. Do you see those eyes? I fell in love with the music of the Dubliners when I listened to my fathers copies of their records in the 60's and even then I felt there was something very special about Ronnie and his voice. I sensed that he was somehow the soul of the group. In the photos of the band on my favourite of those records, Ronnie looks wonderfully drunk. There's something about a man who isn't really bothered about turning up completely three sheets to the wind to a photo shoot that just says it all. Let the music speak, that the proof.

  58. M.... B....

So true and beautifull, just lost my girl, from cancer, and this song makes me cry and smile.

  59. E.... N....

The EU UN all Zionist media, tech companies, NGOs and borderless charities must be disbanded for Ireland to keep it's European cultural heritage identity and have a peaceful future for our children.

  60. o.... y....

It's it just me or did Shane tell the photographer to fuck off at the start lol

  61. J.... L....

    Armstrongs Goodnight

  62. J.... O....

I am Finnish and never even visited Ireland, but I think Ronnie Drew must have been the most charismatic performer of folk music of all time. A truly larger than life personality.

  63. M.... B....

    god bless Ronnie Drew

  64. T.... ....

I know he has passed, but he will never be gone.

  65. P.... ....

10 years ago he went to some more hospitable inn... it's people like Ronnie that make me believe in heaven, in an endless great gig in the sky... where the girls are all pretty, the beer is free and there's bottles of rum growing on every tree... until we meet in person, I will cherish everything that Ronnie and his fine group left behind, so that their spirits live on! Sláinte!

  66. D.... L....

The mans eyes could pierce concrete.

A man may fight and not be slain
A man may court a pretty girl
And perhaps be welcomed back again

why are 99 people giving this video a thumbs down when it's a tribute to a great performer?

    s.... ....

99 people are idiots? I guess some find it necessary to be contrary. That's a shame, considering he truly was a great performer. SMH

    s.... ....

Because different persons have been blessed with a greatly varying degree of intellectual and aesthetic faculties. For instance some appreciate Hip Hop music while others enjoy enjoy Arnold Schönberg's string quartets or Erik Satie's piano pieces. People are different.
