Dubliners, The - The Newry Highwayman Lyrics

In Newry Town I was bred and born
In Steven's Green now I'll die in scorn.
I served my time to the saddling trade
but I turned out to be, I turned out to be a roving blade.

At seventeen I took a wife
I loved her dearly as I love life
And for to keep both fine and gay
I took to robbing, I took to robbing on the King's highway.

I never robbed any poor man yet
Nor any tradesman has cause to fret
I rob the lords and their ladies bright
I take their jewels, I take their jewels to my heart's delight.

To Covent Garden I make my way
With my dear wife for to see the play
Lord Fielding's corps they did me pursue
And I was taken, I was taken by that cursed crew.

My father cried, "Oh, my darling son"
My wife she wept and said, "I'm undone"
My mother tore her white locks and cried,
"'Twas in the cradle, 'twas in the cradle that he should have died."

And when I'm dead and in my grave
A flashy funeral pray let me have
With six bold highwaymen to carry me
Give them good broadswords, good broadswords and liberty.

Six pretty maidens to bear my pall
Give them white ribbons and garlands all
For when I'm dead, aye they'll speak the truth
He was a wild and a wicked youth.

Dubliners, The The Newry Highwayman Comments
  1. d.... d....

I'm proud to be a Newry nyuck 'STIOFAN "

  2. M.... M....

This is my favourite traditional Irish Song and the best version of it sung with great depth of feeling by Sean Cannon...better than even the curragh if Kildare by the Johnston's and songs such as My Lagan Love, Blackwater side and the Black Velvet Band

  3. S.... C....

    Brilient true words

  4. S.... F....

This Newry is the same Newry in Northern Ireland where Newry City plays?

    S.... F....

Yes of course...there is no other Newry Town or city in Ireland

  5. b.... ....

If anyone's interested, the first theater at Covent Garden opened in 1732. It apparently became a popular "date night" venue for fashionable highwaymen and their wives.

  6. g.... ....

No reason to be sentimental. I knew the risk and now I will pay. I was a wild and wicked youth

  7. f.... ....

Great voice, one of my all time favourites ☺

  8. A.... v....

    Very impressive

  9. T.... ....

Always come back to the great Sean Cannon, such a magical voice,There is another Sean version with less instrumental input, good as well,

  10. b.... ....

A lovely version.First time I've heard an Irish rendition .His delivery makes it really moving. The English style/ versions are atmospheric and exciting but this feels very personal as the singer really is the highwayman. One of the wonders of folk I suppose that you can hear many different versions and they're all really worth listening to.

  11. J.... F....

    Best version hands-down.

    J.... F....

    Absolutely,Great voice of Sean.Love it.

  12. R.... A....

I remember when Sean first came over to England in the early seventies and sang at the Towersey festival. A wonderfully
    clear, unaffected voice.

This is a fabulous song and so well sung. I've been a Dubliners fan from childhood but this is definitely one of my many favourites of their's. This isn't one of their most common songs and I first heard it on a Radio Scotland Folk programme back in the eighties which I'd recorded onto cassette tape. It's one of those songs that makes my hairs stand on end. Great to sing too. Agree with others that this is the definitive version of this song. Thanks for posting.

  14. S.... P....

    @osammyboy93
Why would it be odd for a Newry man to go to Covent Garden?
It only says he was born in Newry,a Newry man can travel.

  20. s.... m....

the best song that he ever sang so sad and yet so irish

  21. T.... ....

What men of genious were the dubliners, just fancy having the great Luke Kelly & this great Sean Cannon in your group let alone all the others, Pure MAGIC.

  22. R.... H....

good but i prefer toraigh version

  23. o.... ....

@BarryBurtonfan Thanks for response. First time I sang it at a session I was corrected. i think it might be a bit odd for the Newry highwayman to go to Covent Garden to see "the play". Anyway it is a great song and Sean is up there among my favourite singers and the song is now part of my repertoire.
