Dubliners, The - I Wish I Were Back In Liverpool Lyrics

I wish I was back in Liverpool, Liverpool town where I was born
Where there ain't no trees, no scent of grease, no field's of waving corn
But there's lots of girls with peroxide curls and the black and tan flows free
There's six in a bed by the old pier head and it's Liverpool town for me

'Tis seven long years since I wandered away to sail the wild world o'er
Me very first trip on an old steam ship that was bound for Baltimore
I was seven days sick and I just couldn't stick that bobbin' up and down
So I told them "Jack, you'd better turn back for dear old Liverpool town"

I wish I was back in Liverpool, Liverpool town where I was born
Where there ain't no trees, no scent of grease, no field's of waving corn
But there's lots of girls with peroxide curls and the black and tan flows free
There's six in a bed by the old pier head and it's Liverpool town for me

We dug the Mersey tunnel, boys, way back in thirty-three
Dug an hole in the ground until we found an hold called Wallasey
Then the foreman cried "Come on, outside! The roof is fallin' down"
While I'm tellin' you, Jack, we all swum back to dear old Liverpool town

I wish I was back in Liverpool, Liverpool town where I was born
Where there ain't no trees, no scent of grease, no field's of waving corn
But there's lots of girls with peroxide curls and the black and tan flows free
There's six in a bed by the old pier head and it's Liverpool town for me

There's every race and colour of face, there's every kind of name
But the pigeons on the pier head they treat you all the same
And if you walk up upon Parlament Street you'll get faces black and brown
And I've also seen the orange-green in dear old Liverpool town

I wish I was back in Liverpool, Liverpool town where I was born
Where there ain't no trees, no scent of grease, no fiel's of waving corn
But there's lots of girls with peroxide curls and the black and tan flows free
There's six in a bed by the old pier head and it's Liverpool town for me

Luke had the best voice for this song, just love it. And come on you Reds, 29 years of pain is enough - LFC forever!

  3. J.... H....

An old Irishman taught me this song in a pub in Cambridge. Mass. Indebted. My grandfather worked on that Mersey tunnel and this song helps me honor his memory.

Sorry to hear that! Liverpool has always been a cosmopolitan city - it would be very sad if Brexit changed that. At least the majority Liverpool had the good sense to vote remain. Hope you come back one day.

Got more respect for our friends across the Irish Sea than our so called countrymen from down south. Liverpool is special because we welcome everyone and we look after people. Come here and you won't want to leave.

Brian Likings true Liverpool been good to Irish
Although the orange side have done there best to stop the spirit of that city and I don't mean Anglican protestant evangelical baptist on and on just orange you know but most don't thank fuck

    B.... L....

Well said Brian .Forget them southern softies liverpool the capital city always will be .

    B.... L....

Liverpool is not like an English city. It looks towards Ireland and New York. The place is slowly losing its chareacter unfortunately. There are too many students there now and everything is set up for them

    B.... L....

@inertia27 Thats not true, this city goes from strength to strength and long may it remain, just get rid of fat joe!

    B.... L....

@inertia27 it does yes, Liverpool people regard Ireland and Dublin as dear places they like , the rest of England do not really think like that, in many places the Irish are disliked in England, not in Liverpool though , we love the place, I'm born on Merseyside myself , born of a Scouse mum her great-gran was from Ireland .

I am a Scouser playing with a residency in an Irish Bar in the Canaries. Loads of customers come up to me with suggestions for songs. Found out about this tune via a Jock who gave a great rendition of it! Shame on me for not even knowing it existed! Nice vid; thanks for sharing. Ian B
