Dubliners, The - Danny Farrell Lyrics

I knew Danny Farrell when his football was a can.
In his hand me down's and wellers and sandwiches of grand,
But now this pave ment pesent, is a full grown bitter man,
With all his trials and troubles, of hes travelling people's clan

He's a looser a boozer, me and you user,
A rater a traitor, peoples police hater,
So lonely and only, what you call a gurrier,
Still now, Danny Farrell he's a man.

I knew Danny Farrell when he joined the national school,
He was lousy at the gaelic, called him amadan and fool
He was briliant at the toss school
Or traiding objects in the pown
By the time he was an adult all his charming ways were gone.

He's a looser a boozer, me and you user,
A rater a traitor, peoples police hater,
So lonely and only, what you call a gurrier,
Still now, Danny Farrell he's a man.

I knew Dannd Farrell when he queued up for the dole,
And he tried to hide his loss of pride,
That eats away the soul,
Mending pots and kettles, is a trade lost in the past.
Theres no hand out's here for tinkeres was the answer when he asked.

He's a looser a boozer, me and you user,
A rater a traitor, peoples police hater,
So lonely and only, what you call a gurrier,
Still now, Danny Farrell he's a man.

I still know Danny Farrell, saw him just there yesterday,
Drinking methylated spirits, with some winos on the quay,
Now he's fourty going on eighty, with his eyes of hope bereft,
And he told me this for certain, theres not many of us left,

He's a looser a boozer, me and you user,
A rater a traitor, peoples police hater,
So lonely and only, what you call a gurrier,
Still now, Danny Farrell he's a man.

Dubliners, The Danny Farrell Comments
  1. F.... K....

One of my absolute favorite recordings of all time.

  2. M.... C....

Humans being are naturally inclined to believe in something greater than oneself. Despite impossibly great logic and discoveries that argue the complete opposite of this, something within the deepest part of the human psychology, perhaps even a sort of genetic memory that has been passed down from wherever we came from, and that can't simply be dismissed as fear and superstition.

  3. t.... ....

Its the fear of death/nothingness which makes people believe there is something else after death...it makes living easier for them to believe in this nonsense,a would imagine . . . .

  4. M.... C....

So smart people believe that human beings developed as they did at complete random in an endless universe that cares nothing for them, and our continued existence on this blue marble in a sea of cosmic indifference is a matter of chance, and attempting to destroy the faith of those who don't agree with that belief is the right thing to do?

  5. t.... ....

True ,you have to be really GULLABLE to believe in god, religion, heaven & hell etc ! . . .basically, "you weren't here, you were here, you weren't here" , ,pretty obvious really !

  6. M.... C....

Just because you're a faithless heathen doesn't mean you have to force your beliefs out on everyone else.

Truly one of the best irish songs ever sung and writen.
I can still remember when i heard it for the first time, at a Dubliners Concert 1992 here in Munich at the "Circus Krone" building.
It's one of the few songs i've heard in my life that enthralled me outright.
