There are numerous other examples of highly political songs from their early catalog, like "The Three Great Alabama Icons," continuing up through a couple of very conspicuous songs on English Oceans. And yet, after all these years, clueless people are accusing the Truckers of suddenly "going political." The message has always been there, guys. You just weren't paying attention.

Wow---great to read that most are liking this song and what it is about---last year when American Band came out, many people gave Patterson and Cooley shit about being "so damn libtard!" Well, for those who didn't get that they were liberal and had listened to the music for awhile--I guess you didn't hear too damn well or the brain cells didn't compute the lyrics. Glad to see that Patterson, Cooley and the guys decided: "FUCK IT! We will write and perform the sorts of songs we feel we need to do now and let the chips fall where they may, we are not going to be cowed into remaining silent about the shit that this fucking asshole who became president does along with his Republican comrades that is destroying America, not making it "great again!" It is a kick ass song and man, when I last saw the Truckers in November 2016 not long after that election that gave us Trump, going to see them perform was cathartic and much needed. Love how they put "Hell No I Ain't Happy" with Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" and made both a major fucking jam that everyone in the Tampa Theater rocked out hard to!! I love this band and always will. The world is in chaos these days and America probably needs to hear this message many times over, but I'm kinda done with DBT's overtly political awareness content. Their American Band album did it so incredibly well. America just needs good music now more than a message. But that is strictly my opinion.

It always gets me that people will say about musicians and their music when it gets "too political, they shouldn't do that!"--especially when those politics get "too liberal" for some. I don't listen to standard issue "country music" because it is mostly lame and those who make it, especially all the "hat boys" kind of represented by ones like Toby Keith, tend to be all "red, white and blue, True Americans, everything is just great in America and if you don't like it, get the hell out" in their attitude. They all make this sappy, all is right with America, sentimental pap with flying flags and such. I don't go and pitch a fit about the content, more the overall sort of fake feel to it--with it being music that has to hit certain "punch list" things and is pretty empty headed----fake music in a sense. I don't go and piss and moan--I just don't listen to it or buy it or go see it performed live, while I do all of those things with REAL music like that made by the Truckers, Son Volt and others. If you no longer care about the sort of music that the Truckers are making now, then don't buy it. As someone did note and I did earlier in another post----if you could not get it that Patterson and Cooley had a liberal bent---you sure as fuck haven't really paid all that close attention to their music pretty much from day one!!

Shootings are much more common in large cities with very strict gun laws. I, personally, prefer freedom over the illusion of safety. The statistics suggest your gun ownership is not decreasing gun crime. The majority of murders in Britain  are horrible domestic ones, with no weapons other than what is available to hand in the average home.  In the town I have lived for nearly 30 years there have been 3 killings I remember, a jealous man in a pub knifing a flirtatious chap, a young woman killing her abusive husband and a violent man killing his wife (one every ten years, with no threat to me). I really, really, really, don't need a gun! It is a lovely, peaceful place. Your argument that Britain is full of people coming from violent countries bears no scrutiny. They sometimes come from places suffering violence, places at war, just as Europe was at war, that the USA has been at war. There are not races that are more violent that others. Real lyrics with a real message. Don't let anyone say REAL music doesn't still exist. Another thing I appreciate (especially about the Truckers in general) is the effort to try something different with their approach in sound with damn near every release. It's hard to think of many these days who can pull off Southern Rock, Hard Rock, Country, Soul, and Folk all to the same equivalent. DBT has done it and they do it well.
