Drive-By Truckers - Goddamn Lonely Love Lyrics

I got green and I got blues
And everyday there's a little less difference between the two.
So I belly-up and disappear.
Well I ain't really drowning 'cause I see the beach from here.

I could take a Greyhound home but when I got there it'd be gone
Along with everything a home is made up of.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
To kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Sister, listen to what your daddy says.
Don't be ashamed of things that hide behind your dress.
Belly-up and arch your back.
Well I ain't really falling asleep; I'm fading to black.

You could come to me by plane, but that wouldn't be the same
As that old motel room in Texarkana was.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
To kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Stop me if you've heard this one before..
A man walks into a bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor.
Stop me if I ever get that far.
The sun's a desperate star that burns like every single one before.

And I could find another dream,
One that keeps me warm and clean
But I ain't dreamin' anymore, I'm waking up.
So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take everything you got
To kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Drive-By Truckers Goddamn Lonely Love Comments
  1. d.... ....

I laid this song on a little crowd of friends and family in 2008. I saw right away it was touching my daughter. She was living a stones throw from the beach. She could see it,from pretty much anywhere she went. She was starting to drown. And I had no clue. Had no idea about the pills. Greens? Blues? Still don't know what oxycintin looks like. Or Xanax. Or any of the rest of the whole fuckeree.
I don't even know if Jason Isbell was talking about different colored pills when he sang about them. But it sounded heartbreaking and sincere.
After the line,"I ain't really drowning, cuz I see the beach from here." My daughter started crying. She said it was just such a sad and beautiful song.
It only took about another year for her problem to become obvious. And when it did,I remembered this song hitting her. And ever since then,it has been so much more than just a cool sad song,to me.

If it wasn’t for The Unicorn mentioning this band, wouldn’t know they existed. Not bad

  3. T.... D....

I was thinking about DBT last week ( I don’t do that very often!). I wondered to myself if they ever got radio play at all- then got in my car and they had just come on. That was cool.

15 years ago today this album came out

    M.... H....

Oh my God that's crazy...was working with my brother landscaping...in and out of the truck. Many times idling in front of a customer's house listening, marveling at the awesomeness. Coupla Jersey dudes but this totally spoke volumes about the marginalized working class lives so many of us live...in all their guts and glory

  16. R.... L....

Funny how life throws the perfect song at you. I'm not sure if I care too much or care too little. Either way, it hurts.

  34. T.... D....

I went to see these once but was late and missed the show, I don’t have many regrets, that is one

  35. H.... T....

Wow... Not many tracks make my eyes fill up with tears, but this never fails.

  36. k.... f....

When he sends you this song....

  37. D.... M....

I drink heavy to this song.

  38. J.... T....

    Perfect song

  39. O.... M....

I am an alternative, indie rock guy (The Replacements for example) who understands the influence of country (or country rock) on some of my favorite artists but I can only find only about 20 country songs I like but this is one fine song. And on the another front, Justin Townes Earle is so much better than his dad. He has at least 5 good songs to his dad's goddamn fat zero song.

    O.... M....

Ehhh Steve Earl is a killer song writer man, check out his songs Ben Mcullough and The Mountain. But his son does deliver his music better.

    O.... M....

@Treddis Pennington Those songs are better than i thought but really if I only like about 20 or so country songs .. I'm a lost cause. Listen to the Replacements "left of the dial" or "answering machine"

  40. D.... R....

    Billions brought me here.

  41. R.... B....

Fits in my life to a T. Have you heard this 1 before? Stop me if you have

  42. J.... L....

    Another Isbell song.
Everybody please cry with me for the utter loneliness and beauty of his voice

  46. s.... ....

Always perfect and just what I wanna hear. ♥

  47. M.... ....

This song is great for getting drunk to i can attest to that. Try it sometime especially if you're a miserable fuck like me

    M.... ....

    i am exactly that.....but damnit i can't drink...i'm allergic

  48. W.... B....

This song is way better than that song about that other thing!

  49. s.... ....

May I suggest - Tyler Childers to Y'all - He covers this very very well...Good Day!

  50. n.... c....

Meh, it’s ok. Kinda generic whiny songwriting with lazy instrument composition. Better than nickelback

  51. S.... G....

    Pure talent

  52. W.... ....

    224 deaf people apparently voted

  53. W.... ....

    Perfection...

  54. A.... F....

Been listening to these guys for about ten years and this album still remains at the top of the list.

  55. A.... B....

Anyone seen the live performance from Workplay August 17, 2012 by Jason Isbell and the 400 unit? Truly an amazing performance.

  56. L.... C....

Flawless music at is best and whatitshould be

  57. P.... D....

Is the moon shining or it's late night too much pc or paranoia?

  58. A.... G....

    M.... M....

  64. R.... D....

His solo stuff is decent but just nowhere near as great as his DBT songs.

  65. T.... L....

This song is my farewell to our lovely sphere. I've never wished to leave her, but she will be leaving us, sooner, rather than later

  66. d.... ....

    Goddamn fantastic songwriting

  67. T.... I....

    Great track! Thanks from Canada

  68. J.... J....

    I haven't heard a half-assed tune from J.I. yet.

I had 6 or 7 Jim Beam doubles and stumbled out. RIP mom and thanks for 19 years of having the greatest mom on earth Cindy Green! God bless the Drive By Truckers!

God bless your mother, but the singer of this this song was not in the band when they came to bamajam

    N.... A....

  87. A.... D....

    A.... C....

    Thanks for the lyrics!

    A.... C....

I still think the opening line is “I got green and I got booze”

If it ain’t, it should be....

    A.... C....

@Kaydub it's "blues" but I dig what you're saying! The booze kinda goes without saying on this one... I like "blues" bc it goes with ""green" lyrically... and he's saying, I think, that he may have some cash in his pocket, he still can't shake the blues of the loneliness. Great song n lyrics either way! :)

  93. C.... I....

I came here after watching billions season 2 such a smooth calm song 👍

    Great show too!
