Drive-By Truckers - Checkout Time In Vegas Lyrics
A bloody nose, empty pockets, a rented car with a trunk full of guns
It ain't true that the sun don't rise in Vegas,
I've seen it once
She might have been somebody's mama
He might have been somebody's son
They're luck was good as gone
They'll be after me by the time the buffet closes,
Making sure sin city still shines brighter than creations dark
If all you need is a badge to take what's left from those who lost it,
A badge ain't no more real than bullets are
A bloody nose, empty pockets, a rented car with a trunk full of guns
Checkout time is sundown in Las Vegas,
But it only rises once

Drive-By Truckers Checkout Time In Vegas Comments
I just left Las Vegas and followed my tradition of playing this whole CD while driving through the open desert. I gotta admit I didn't really internalize this CD when I lived in the southeast U.S. Because it's so artistically and sadly dovetailed in the wake of the shooting, I wanted to share this song with a friend and youtubed it...and THERE ARE A FEW ANCIENT COMMENTS? THIS IS WHAT WE EXPRESS ABOUT IT? THIS THING SHOULD BE AN ANTHEM! Cooley, forgive them....they know not how to think! This song was written ten years before the 'Vegas shooting. The lyrics and emotional subtext were already so devastatingly true about the inherent darkness and hopelessness of that seedy town, and how that ugliness seeps into everything and everyone there...then life imitates art...somehow dimmer than creation's dark.
This song was written about my father.. a song about a time when he was behaving badly.
no kiddin?
@tison345 it sounds a hell of a lot better after a dozen patterson songs
Great song. I saw DBT a couple nights ago in Little Rock, AR. They really put on a good concert, and this song live is a hit.
