Drive-By Truckers - Armageddon's Back in Town Lyrics

As we pulled into town there was a breakdown
As the moonlight hit the town
But it was High Noon in somebody's head
Before the first boot hit the ground
Spent the day in Cincinnati on the cell phone
Trying to figure out the expense
Stabbing fists into drawn-shade darkness
Battered by experience

There's something to be said for hangin' in there
Past the point of hangin' 'round too long
Hung out to dry or put away wet
All the same when it all goes wrong
It's all my fault, it's all my fault
When you misconstrue the wonder and the shame
All over town, my name's passed around
'Til you can't tell the darkness from the flame
You can't tell the darkness from the flame

I left my car at the airport
And flew to Kansas City in the rain
I know enough to know I'm standing here soaked
And the weatherman's to blame
I left the house empty after sunset
With someone else to figure out the stains
I take my responsibility
For the darkness and the pain

It's all my fault
Everything's all my fault
Guess a butcher know how to trim the fat
When it all comes down
Armageddon's back in town
You can't tell the rabbit from the hat
You can't tell the rabbit from the hat

The dye has been cast
Symbolisms so pronounced
That there's nothing left to wonder or explain
There'll be no healing
From the art of double-dealing
Armageddon's back in town again
Armageddon's back in town again
Armageddon's back in town again

I have loved the truckers for nearly 20 years, I will always see the good in everything they do but this album is poor. This is the best song on the album by a long way but this doesn't stand up to even average songs on their last few albums. I hope this one grows on me like the last one did but I can't see it happening right now, there's simply nothing to get excited about.

    D.... S....

@Eric Hart Get real dude, they be devastated to lose 10,000 of folk just like him, Not that there are 10,000, The only reason i'm here is because i was on a forum page the heading of the thread was: Sorriest concert you ever saw.... This band is listed right at the top so i thought i'd take a look to see just how bad, this was the comment: It was chock full of monumental suck-age. All of them were swinging their own individual bottles of liquor onstage, but it didn’t seem to help. The show was so atrocious we left shortly after they took the stage.

I found their performance to be much more offensive than the Black Lives Matter poster they were sporting on stage.

On a happy note the opening act, Heath Green and the Makeshifters, were fantastic!...So in saying that many many more are walking away... eat that f*ckface!!

  33. u.... c....

Gosh it crazy how bad DBT sucks now, I would have never expected them to be okay with releasing such lame music as they have recently

    u.... c....

DBT have always been liberal. One only needs to listen to their lyrics to grasp this. In the Isbell era, and before.

    u.... c....

Chad Beermann yes that is common knowledge to anybody who knows anything about truckers. But never in their history have they so blatantly expressed their opinion on current events in their lyrics like on American band. That doesn’t make for good music, that’s what you resort to when your creative juices start running dry. There is no other album in their catalog that comes close to the regurgitated liberal talking points found on American band. SRO spoke of racism in the past, also incorporated the spirit of being young and rocking out. DS spoke of the hard ships people were experiencing while the government blows money on rocket ships, yet during the Reagan administration. Never have they come out to support BS movements like BLM. They went full retard.

    u.... c....

@Chad Beermann pay no attention to uncle chaos, he's a dipshit, yeah never before have they done that I want to hear the same shit over and over, let's go listen to the album were george Wallace burns in hell, and four little black girls get blown up for no goddamn good reason, and pretend the truckers weren't always this political, if you don't like it don't listen, by that last post uncle chaos proved who the idiot actually is, don't like it, you don't have to buy or listen, you certainly don't have to post your dumbass comments

    u.... c....

@uncle chaos what makes them not allowed to speak their minds? You certainly have spoken your mind why can't they, like I said you don't have to listen or buy, but liberals are not the idiots, certainly the truckers aren't

    M.... M....

Coming from a classical liberal standpoint the democratic party has slid way further left than I feel comfortable with. That Overton window is a bitch, isn't it? DBT used to be smart and selective about their politics, now they are pushy and cringey. Luckily they lost me as a fan decades ago.

    f.... ....

@uncle chaos Damn, I don't know if Hood and Cooley have fallen that far. But yeah, a DBT song from today doesn't have near the edge of a 2004 song... or even 2007 track.

    f.... ....

@Joel Stice the big to do is their best record followed closely by go go boots , the dirty south is so uneven, the isbell era is so overrated in my opinion, we have been much better off since he left, cause we have a better DBT and the 400 unit to enjoy, best thing the isbell left the band, I love their work since he left much better

Best band in America these days.

    S.... ....

@PED/Donk EXPERT I was being serious, are you? Are you honestly saying you think Dylan, Young, and Petty have good voices?, Because if you are then I can't take you seriously, Bob Dylan has one of the worst voices in music, especially now a days, Neil Young's voice is not good, and Tom petty was not a strong singer, they all made up for it by being three of the absolute best songwriters in Rock history, Tom petty being probably the most underrated and best ever in my opinion,. I absolutely love TP cried like a member of my family died when he died, but he certainly wasn't a great singer, he was a badass though, my all time favorite, I think Patterson hood is in that line of great songwriters with shitty voices, you can disagree but I think you are wrong

Get a fucking life, if you don't like DBT anymore why not just go away then, you seem to have not liked them for a while and yet here you are just shitting on a great band, if you don't like them that's fine but it doesn't make people trolls or children cause they disagree with you

    J.... L....

@Puncheon 50 I agree, but I could also hear it on any of their albums. It does have a very shit shots count sound though

    J.... L....

I'm stoked to hear a song called rosemary, the Bible and a gun, which according to track lists is the lead off track on the new album, just by the title alone I think it is gonna be epic

    J.... L....

@Brandon B would that be a bad thing though? American band was one of my favorite albums

    J.... L....

    LFC1892
It’s a bad thing to any of their “fans” who never realized the bands’ political beliefs until American Band.
Personally, I like everything they’ve done since Jason Isbell was in the band.

    J.... L....

@charles bolton agreed, the band are probably happy to be rid of those fans maybe, but maybe not, how anyone didn't realize their political beliefs is amazing to me

  48. p.... e....

Wonderful and great to hear some new music so great
    DBT never disappoint

    p.... e....

@uncle chaos no you are wrong that it is unlistenable, it is actually a very good album, again it is more directly political, but all their albums are political, I get it you don't like it but that's your problem not DBT, you don't have to listen and I don't understand why you feel the need to come on here and criticize it, it sounds to me that your objections are because you don't like the political tone not the music, I find your criticism to be ridiculous, and not based on legit reasons you just don't agree with the sentiment

    p.... e....

LFC1892 sounds like you are unable to accept criticism of an album you like. It’s a comment section where people express their opinions, I’m not telling you to not express your opinion, why do you feel that I should not express mine? I’ve been listening to truckers for a long time, still have shirts, hats and posters in my closet from years of going to shows. I’m pretty sure I’m entitled just as much as you are to express my opinion in a comment section.

    p.... e....

@uncle chaos I don't have a problem with you expressing your opinion, I just don't understand why with your feelings about the last album and this seemingly knowing you were gonna hate this song before you even heard it, why would someone go out of there way just to bash a band they claim to at least in the past be a fan of?, I don't understand why you would even bother knowing that you wouldn't like it, it comes off as just looking for something/someone to bitch about

    p.... e....

I’m just going to say that apparently they DO disappoint some people with music that is more blatantly political. Regardless of their albums they ARE one the best live bands in the world!

    p.... e....

charles bolton very fair statement, I second that.

  50. R.... B....

Great tune with a thumping heartbeat looking forward to hearing more.....

  51. B.... B....

Wow. This might be the first DBT record I don’t buy. I hope this isn’t representative of what the whole record will be like. This is almost unlistenable.

I really dislike the songwriting direction Patterson has taken since American Band (the worst outing in their catalogue by a wide margin, in my opinion). These lyrics seem like the first draft of an idea sketched out in a notebook and then immediately recorded.

    B.... B....

@Edward Edman that's a no true drive by truckers fan (Scotsman) fallacy, our difference of opinion might be in that my first truckers album was the big to do so my first exposure to them was after isbell left, my second was southern rock opera so before he was around, so the isbell albums were not my intro to the band so I have no nostalgia for those albums really, they are good to great albums just not my favorites, I definitely think that has something to do with the difference of opinion, I wouldn't flat out call you wrong though, I just disagree

    B.... B....

LFC1892 As I wrote, fair enough. You seem like a cool dude.

    B.... B....

@Edward Edman if you like Cooley's writing you should check out his song off the new album grievance merchants, I would argue it is way, way, way up there for his best song, I like it better then women without whiskey, Uncle Frank, when the pin hits the shell, where the devil don't stay, birthday boy, it might be my favorite Cooley song period, or it's just new and that opinion won't last but I really like it

    B.... B....

LFC1892 It’s a good song but it’s not like a zip city -marry me -birthday boy ( to name a few). You’re way out, can’t understand that you would rank it higher than those remarkable songs?! It’s decent though. To much politics on this album. Same as the American Band - but that album was fucking awesome.

    B.... B....

....one Scotsman to another......we don't need another album on American politics......what a clusterfuck.......loved them for the around 16 years and for me I can't see past Brighter Than Creations Dark.......but that's only my view...... boring as fuck if we all agreed.....🎸🎶😂

  52. S.... R....

another great track - i love those lyrics and great to hear that jangle of the guitars again. I'm off to listen to some back catalogue, its been too long DBT
