Drive-By Truckers - A Ghost To Most Lyrics

I guess I'll never grow a sideburn
It's a shame with all I've got to go between
I hope somebody's cause takes soon
It's getting hard to find a place a root can sink
Mama said a lot of things and be thankful was the one she never minded saying twice
Thanks to her I can think clear enough,
To be thankful that she died before tonight

Saving everybody takes a man on a mission
With a swagger that can set the world at ease
Some believe it's God's own hand on the trigger
And the other dumping water in the streets
Talking tough is easy when it's other people's evil
And you're judging what they do or don't believe
It seems to me you'd have to have a hole you're own
To point a finger at somebody else's sheet

Baby every bone in my body's gone to jumping
Like they're gonna come through my skin
If they could get along without the rest of me, it wouldn't matter if they did
But skeletons ain't got nowhere to stick they're money
Nobody makes britches that size
And besides you're a ghost to most before they notice,
That you ever had a hair or a hide

I don't know how good it does a man,
To keep on telling him how good it is he's free
Free to wash his ghost down the drain,
And free for them to tell him there's no such a thing

    D.B.T 2019

    K.... C....

Everything up to and including 'the big to do' was amazing

  4. T.... A....

It never ends, but you don't either. So there's plenty of time for memories to burn into your soul their meaning. But love just loves being the bellows that fires the heart out of my mind.

  5. f.... ....

fuck Facebook with a rubber dick.

  6. O.... 7....

    Mike Cooley is the man.

What do you suppose someone else’s sheet means?

    A.... S....

I always thought it was kind of a “Don’t throw stones if you live in a glass house” statement, where you’re accusing someone of being intolerant (wearing a Klansman sheet) but having to look through the holes in your own to make the accusation. Yes? No? Maybe?

    A.... S....

I think it means Nobody is perfect if your pointing your finger at somebody it’s because you have problems of your own...

    A.... S....

J B I think the sheet refers to being a ghost. And think you're right about the rest of it though. Don't cast stones unless you are without sin. Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house. first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. ... That sort of thing. You'd have to have a hole in your own to point a finger at someone's sheet. The fact that one would do that means they aren't perfect either.

For me this is a truth about handling struggles on the inside and how it effects us on the outside. I lost a child and the pain of moving on and how torn I have been about putting one foot in front of the other. it's almost like one part of you is dead and the other is judging your self and everyone else. Cooley you're a true talent.

  14. M.... M....

Sages of the west. Changed my life. Love.

Am I the only one who tears up every time I hear this song?

    P.... P....

Not at all, Penny. Not at all!!!

    P.... P....

It sends a chill down my spine.

    P.... P....

Not at all, I'm singing this on repeat in my head at a funeral tomorrow!

    P.... P....

    Hank Williams

  17. M.... ....

And somehow this song is about Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans.

  18. T.... M....

All their songs remind me of a cross between Steve Earle and The Black Crowes,,but I like them though

    T.... M....

    Well..if you're gonna cross 2 artists!!!

    T.... M....

good comparison, maybe that's why I love this sooooo much

  19. C.... ....

Shit hot song... Cooley has a talent !

  20. J.... B....

  22. P.... ....

This is my favorite DBT song, Cooley songs are always the greatest.

    P.... ....

    Cooley's magnum opus....

  23. M.... J....

Every time I want to play a song... a commercial? get it / don't get it...

  24. t.... h....

with you on that man ... always liked the cooley songs but really have gotten into mikes songs lately ... wish the whole band would tour up here, but do get to see patterson in two weeks and friggin pumped fo that ....

  25. S.... B....

Dude I feel you. It has taken me a while to realize now we have two great bands playing real music. When Jason first left I was very bummed, but I have grown to really like Cooley's lyrics. I still mis hearing the full line up playing songs like Outfit, Goddam Lonely Love, Decoration Day. But its all good, I don't think it was ego's as much as Jason wanted to do his own thing. Not to mention the divorce from Shannon the former bassist.

  26. C.... M....

this band is just blow you away amazing seen them live and just....WOW!!!!!!!

  27. s.... ....

"I overheard Cooley being asked by a friend what it all meant and his response was how 'It's really hard for me to find a suit that fits me right.'" - Patterson Hood

  28. s.... ....

    @bobjones864
Gotta admit, I do miss Jason Isbell in the fold. He really added that melodic, flowing, shimmer to their sound. Small stages don't leave much room for three big egos, but damn...it just seemed so perfect.

  29. s.... ....

    @eatbananaforlunch
Oh, Brighton UK. Have a great time, ya lucky bloke!

  30. s.... ....

    @eatbananaforlunch
    These sound right to me.
Tune down one whole step to play along.
    intro and verses: Cadd9 G D Em
    chorus: G Am C G Cadd9 D Cadd9
    bridge: Am Bm Em F C G

    s.... ....

    sickb2200 Someone told me that they tune the 1st and 6th strings down to D . Like Neil Young . Then they tune down a whole step . 1st string to 6th string , 1st - C , 2nd - A , 3rd - F , 4th -C , 5th - G , 6th - C . I don't know the tuning for the bass .

  31. b.... ....

That's John Neff. He's been playing with the Truckers for years. He actually played on the very first DBT record.

He's totally a badass, and he's a much bigger part of the band since Isbell left. He's a full fledged trucker now.
