Mangini's drum tech is a crane operator with that cymbal height

Michael Mangini is a great drummer and I appreciate him, but the difference between him and Mike Portnoy is that Portnoy is a prog drummer and Mangini is a metal drummer. Portnoy always sounds completely relaxed when he plays, as if he could be playing a Beatles song when he's pulling out the most intense fills. Same could be said for all the other members of DT as well. Petrucci is whipping out the craziest riffs, but he could easily be BBQing a steak. It could just be my nostalgia for classic DT, but Mangini makes me edgy and I feel like he's going to beat me over the head.

Mike Portnoy was the energetic rock and roll dude who brought balance to the rest of the band, who are overly cerebral, introverted, self indulgent technical megalomaniacs when left to their own devices. Mangini only added to the underlying problem. You saw that lead to it's inevitable logical end as the band degenerated into the buffoonery that was The Astonishing (The Embarrassing) . Now all of a sudden they are trying to reverse course in a hurry. They might be looking to Apollo for inspiration ..... anyway, this song is solid. Not great, but solid. Formulaic prog rock - who knew such a thing existed ???

Then you need to start listening to more songs. I've been a DT fan for close to 30 years. This is crap. I thought the Astonishing was the low point....seems I was wrong.

Agree with Gustavo. The first 7 or 8 albums, including the Change of Seasons EP really was killer prog. The songwriting was climaxes out of this world. You're in for a treat.
