Dream Theater - The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun Lyrics

[music by Dream Theater, lyrics by Petrucci]

Watching my window I was led like a
child
As the roadway lamplights
misguided my mind through the night
a shadow of limits
We were racing the rain
my hands held the wheel
My eyes tried to hold their place

there must have been a time
when I thought that you were
watching
It had to be when my senses lost
control
I thought I'd slipped away
I thought I could still feel us
moving
It must have been a cloud
no bigger than a man's hand

Every reason I risk my life
To come back to you
Is locked behind your door
You're my immunity
Outside I watched you burn
Heavy hearts were bleeding
A cry for help, a familiar voice
My melting hands streaked the glass

As I walked away
I wondered what had really
happened
had I run out of time
did I push myself too far
As my last step fell
I felt my hands upon the wheel
had I come back to life
or did I ever leave at all

In higher lives
We seem to be
always a moment too late
We're past the time
when we looked on
Now we're
THE ONES WHO HELP TO
SET THE SUN
this time for real
I locked the door behind me
My mind was still a wreck
from what I saw
For when my hands are still
I'll recognize the message
never again will my senses lose
control
In higher lives
We seem to be
Always a moment too late
We're past the time
when we looked on
Now we're
THE ONES WHO HELP TO
SET THE SUN

Dream Theater The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun Comments
  1. M.... ....

    Who’s on the pic?

  2. C.... E....

    Majesty!

  3. B.... 1....

    this album sucks

  4. L.... V....

    Fantastic!

  5. D.... ....

    Love the intro

  6. R.... A....

1:16 When you're in a big city in a broad daylight and no one is there.

That's what I can imagine on those keyboard riffs.

    R.... A....

    I am legend

  7. J.... d....

When Geddy Lee from Rush, Geoff Tate from Queensryche and James Hetfield from Metallica would make a song it would pretty much sound like this.

  8. r.... ....

Unbelievable that these guys were in their early twenties when they cut this album

  9. F.... R....

Best song off of WDADU! And a VERY underrated DT track overall.

  10. a.... ....

    Their best track imho.

  11. L.... B....

This is one of my favorite Dream theater pieces. What a debut record.

    L.... B....

Hard to realise how damn young they were when they made this...

  12. J.... M....

Thirtieth anniversary is coming up soon. Hopefully, we'll see a revival of obscure stuff like this and "Light Fuse and Get Away".

  13. S.... ....

I can't be the only one who hears a little Fountain Of Lamneth in that intro starting at 1:16. No doubt they were influenced by Rush, it's just nice to hear the same theme and and be reminded of Rush anyway lol. The part in The Fountain Of Lamneth is around 5:30 in that song.

    S.... ....

Dream Theater was in fact heavily influenced by Rush and many other prog rock and metal bands. I believe they got their original name, "Majesty", after hearing "Bastille Day" and saying that the ending sounded very "Majestic".

    S.... ....

    me too !!!

    S.... ....

Yeah Portnoy said as much that they were influenced by Rush, and they had a habit of listening to some european not well known prog bands. Curiosity was when Portnoy stated that even more heavy influence for them was YES, more than Rush.

  14. C.... t....

Love this song but the album sounds like it was recorded in an empty venue. Very echo-y.

    C.... t....

Lots and lots of reverb - seems like it was an 80s thing.

  15. J.... F....

I've said it before and I'll say it again. They need Kevin Moore back. His playing complimented the music so well! He doesn't make the band sound like carnival music. I'm a fan of Jordan but the way he approaches it's more of a lead and interferes with the music at times.

    J.... F....

Jose Fuentes Not to talk about how fucking much they need Portnoy back.

    J.... F....

Dude i totally agree. Kevin Moore had the gift of hitting all those notes that got you right in the feels.

    J.... F....

    Yes @Kazereload. Mangini's good but he's a robot... a robot.. :(

    J.... F....

    Totally agreed, bro! 🤘

    J.... F....

Kevin felt, and delivered the atmosphere the music needed...I like my music technical except the keyboards. Jordan is the reason I have a problem with newer DT, like I went back to TOT, there were parts that should have been heavy but Jordan's keyboards made it sound like clown music and took the edge right off

  16. k.... c....

i had this album when it first came out and still got it better then all the albums they made still listen to it now over 25yrs

  17. S.... ....

One of my favorite Dream Theater moments at around 1:15

    S.... ....

    same so chill

  18. K.... C....

    james lebrie is shit

    K.... C....

+Karle Clements This wasn't Labrie, it was Charles Dominici.

    K.... C....

+Yash Chauhan i know that i bought the alubm on cassete in 89 when it came out i listern to him before labrie

  19. j.... ....

Probably the most forgotten Dream Theater track ever.....half of me wishes they stuck with ambient and glam.....

    j.... ....

    jmiester25 Ik, r?

    j.... ....

I think this album, Images And Words, and Awake are just all amazing, clear evidence to why they have the name they do.

    j.... ....

@Partial Chickenz those first three albums were something else...they sort of stained their name after SFaM.

  20. T.... ....

    Mysterious intro.

  21. S.... ....

I think the lyrics about JP getting blazed and driving to meet his girlfriend, and getting really paranoid about it lmao

Given what we know now (from A Nightmare to Remember), his trepidation about driving impaired is understandable...but still, it's funny to get such a banal interpretation from all the pretty metaphors of prog lyrics XD

  22. L.... T....

    The intro makes the song.

  23. X.... ....

Favorite one from Dream and Day

  24. C.... S....

Well, may not be the best, but is my second favorite

  25. e.... ....

    ehh.... no.

  26. n.... ....

Lucky goddamn bastard! I wasn´t even born yet, only until the release of A Change Of Seasons...

  27. T.... ....

Holy crap, I think Breaking Benjamin used the exact same train sounds in the opening and closing instrumentals for their album Phobia.
I'm not saying Breaking Benjamin is better than Dream Theater; I like both bands.

  28. C.... S....

    Best song on the Album.

    C.... S....

Nothing can be better than The killing Hand!
But yeah this is an awesome song. I was born 7 years after this album was released, but it's definitely my favorite. When the astonishing came out, I listened to the whole thing, I was so disappointed that I cried. Only listening to WDADU made me feel better

    C.... S....

fabptitpom This album is badly underrated. I especially love Afterlife.

    C.... S....

Cayque Sales Good to see a Devin Townsend fan on a dream theater song

  29. K.... C....

    extremely underrated song and album..

  30. H.... ....

Yeah he was very good back then. These days, he's hit or miss. Dominici sounded horrible in the lie clips I've seen but I think he sounds ok on his solo stuff.

  31. S.... ....

    why was i born in 1991 ?

  32. C.... H....

The intro pretty much = Rush - No One At The Bridge (from the Fountain of Lamneth)

  33. s.... ....

@aravna I honestly prefer LaBrie. Dominici is a fantastic singer, but I don't feel like he was as good of a fit with the band. On top of this, his particular tone made them sound a bit like a Queensryche cover band.

  34. m.... ....

Been looking for this one for a long time. First Album I bought, and followed them ever since.

  35. p.... ....

Gonna be a long time before this band is this good again...if ever.

  36. J.... B....

It took me forever to realize the intro solo on this is Petrucci going crazy with delay and the whammy bar and not keyboards.

  37. j.... ....

    @ShiftyStealthy Testy, aren't you?

  38. S.... B....

    WHAT A FUCKING TREMENDOUS SONG!!!!!!!

  39. S.... R....

Who are those two motherfuckers who dislike this, they should be hanged by their penises!!!

    S.... R....

    Slobodan Radonjić Ow.

  40. l.... m....

    @FullMetalFurbee i guess so

  41. l.... m....

@Drum4evr22 i like the boredom because of 01:16

  42. l.... m....

    5:04 my favorite part

  43. l.... m....

01:11 sounds like the beginning of metropolis pt 1 the miracle and the sleeper

  44. l.... m....

1:16 reminds of brinstar from metroid

  45. T.... ....

The intro still gives me chills.... I am immediately thrown back to the time and place when I first listened to this song. (which happened to be a rainy night in an 89 camaro...go figure lol)

  46. T.... ....

    @Hendrix1326 well put good sir

  47. c.... ....

one guy got his nipple branded

  48. S.... ....

    cool!!!!!!!!!!

  49. s.... ....

Thank you, Dream Theater... Magic and Celestial group...

  50. k.... ....

@wwerulestna They sound a bit like every band I've ever heard sometimes =p

  51. Z.... J....

They sound a bit like Rush at times here.

  52. m.... ....

@Drum4evr22 Thanx for saving me from boredom.

  53. T.... ....

skip to 2:45 unless you love boredom

  54. s.... ....

    Kevin =(..

  55. H.... ....

Actually, based on the tempo and key of the song, I think Charlie (a classially trained singer) does a fantastic job in this song. However, my opinion and yours are just what they are: opinions.

I love this song, and the overall mood sits among Dream Theater's best in my heart.

  56. H.... ....

    To Takenashi:

From the context, symbology, and tone of the song, as well as the ambience, my guess is that it's about a really intense acid trip that John Petrucci had.

I'm not sure if you've ever done acid, but the experience to me sure reminds me of this song. Just read the lyrics.

  57. M.... R....

dominci cant find a good vocal melody to save his life in this song

  58. T.... ....

love this song but i dont enjoy the beginning (up untill around 2:54) then it gets good.

does any1 know what this song is about?

  59. l.... ....

Awesome tune. I love this CD.
