Dream Theater - Scarred Lyrics

To Rise, To Fall.
To Hurt, To Hate.
To Want, To Wait.
To Heal, To Save.

Can't hear it
we fear it
awareness won't come near it

Distractive
Reactive
Disguised in spite of time

I never bared my emotion
My passion always strong
I never lost my devotion
but somewhere fate went wrong

Can't let them rape me again
Your venom's not family here
won't let them fill me with
fatalistic remedies

What if the rest of the world
was hopelessly blinded by fear?
Where would my sanctity live?
Suddenly nobody cares.

It's never enough
You're wasting your time
Isn't there something I could say?
You don't understand
You're closing me out
How can we live our lives this way?

You tell me I'm wrong
I'm risking my life
Still, I have nothing in return
I show you my hands
You don't see the scars
Maybe you'll leave me here to burn.

What if the rest of the world
was hopelessly drowning in vain?
Where would our self pity run?
Suddenly everyone cares.

Blood...Heal me
Fear...Change me
Belief will always save me
Blood...Swearing
Fear...Staring
Conviction made aware

Give up on misery
Turn your back on dissent
Leave their distrust behind
Wash your hands of regret

Do you feel you don't know me anymore?
And do you feel I'm afraid of your love?
And how come you don't want me asking?
And how come my heart's not invited?
You say you want everyone happy
Well, we're not laughing.

And how come you don't understand me?
And how come I don't understand you?
Thirty years say we're in this together
So open your eyes.

People in prayer for me
everyone there for me
Sometimes I feel I should face this alone
My soul exposed
It calms me to know that I won't

Blood...Heal me
Fear...Change me
Belief will always save me
Blood...Swearing
Fear...Staring
Conviction made aware

Give up on misery
Turn your back on dissent
Leave their distrust behind
Wash your hands of regret

Blood...Heal me
Fear...Change me
Belief will always save me
Blood...Swearing
Fear...Staring
Conviction made aware

Learning from misery
Staring back at dissent
Leaving distrust behind
I'm inspired and content

Dream Theater Scarred Comments
  1. I.... P....

LaBrie vocal on this track reminds me on Bruce Dickinson's voice.

  2. .... ....

    2019???😎😎😎

  3. N.... G....

The outro to me is just the epitome of sadness and hopelessness, in a beautiful way, hard to explain. I still remember the first time I heard this song 15 years ago, and the outro to me reminded me of the ultimate end of the world, and everything was winding down, in a very melancholy and ceremonious way.

  4. T.... C....

When this album came out - it wasn't on the cassette version. I couldn't believe that THIS was the song they chose to cut. Best song on the album! My favorite album ever.

  5. L.... O....

    54 thumbs down what fuk!

  6. S.... S....

This album is everything. It's metal, it's jazzy, it's groovy. One of best metal albums for sure

  7. l.... ....

The intro and specially the beginning of the solo at 0:25 reminds me so much of Fripp. Sounds like a little homage to me.

  8. J.... D....

Esta canción es sencillamente hermosa, brillante, oscura y melancólica, que combinación de emociones tan brutal ¿no?

  9. H.... P....

    KoЯn Theather? Dream KoЯn?

  10. M.... S....

    7:37 Here we go!!!!

    8:15 Here we go again!!!!!

  11. J.... D....

What a piece of art !

  12. M.... L....

I like music that takes a musically concept and intensifies and/or adds to that idea as the songs progresses. It’s a powerful thing; Addicting even

  13. J.... G....

James Labrie's voice is epic on this song. His vibrato is killer!

  14. J.... S....

    *cough cough* overrated *cough cough*

    J.... S....

    Only by you apparently

  15. P.... N....

    The Keyboard at the end😍

  16. N.... D....

Chupensen unos escrotos!! esto era dream theater, larga vida a Kevin moore

  17. J.... S....

Dark, melodic, inspiring, they don't make this anymore

  18. n.... ....

I love Jordan. But Kevin had insane amounts of soul on his keys. thats undeniable.

  19. a.... 3....

    What are the lyrics about?

  20. m.... m....

this was when they wehere making art,not machine

  21. O.... S....

The whole song is great, but 5:12 - 6:08 is just brilliant

  22. M.... S....

Probably my favourite moore era Petrucci solo, brilliant, only topped by maybe afterlife. I really am not a fan of awake, at all, but that solo man...mmmmmmmmmmmm.

  23. O.... ....

Who Dream With Moore Keyboards Parts?Who with Rudess?that was the question,i vote for Moore Hands down now and forever!i have to admit that Metropolis Part 2 was a great piece of art and Rudess gives me shivers on many parts, but Moore had something obscure, dark and melanchonic that fits DT better, the old DT of course...

  24. B.... ....

the beginning sounds like stock music, not that its a bad thing

  25. L.... C....

Awake album is confusing. Like this, I really don't know which is on the left channel and which is on the right? 🤔 some uploads are reversed stereo.

  26. k.... b....

My favorite Dream Theater song, and it is not easy to pick one

  27. w.... ....

The ending part of this song and the whole game with tempo rythm and melody, is beyond epicness!..

  28. R.... M....

I had te tape of this album back in the 90's and this song was not on it. Came to find out about this song many many years later... Anyone knows why the tape didn't have it? Space issues or something?

  29. B.... B....

Huge Rush influence in this one. 9:32 sounds like it came straight off of Permanent Waves. Great track.

  30. Z.... M....

Easily the best progressive rock album of all time! And that's not just my opinion. FACT. HELLS YEA

  31. D.... H....

    kevin is DREAM

    mike is THEATER

    D.... H....

    JP is MAJESTY

  32. F.... S....

    7:11 Premiata Forneria Marconi ??

  33. R.... H....

    3:43 to 4:18 - 35 seconds of headbanging brilliance.

    R.... H....

    i love this part!

  34. H.... ....

    KEVIN MOORE

  35. L.... W....

that outro ,sneaky bar of 6/8 simple time and its a different song..magnifico.

  36. R.... ....

Imagine a band like Rush, where all of the songs were like YYZ. You've came to Dream Theater

  37. m.... g....

verberg het xintuig door het roken van de witte weduwe... voor u ben ik tenminste dapper van de stoep gestapt....??? thc enemy is company

  38. B.... E....

I probably can't count the outro to this song, but I am pretty sure I can play it perfectly on the drums, just by memorizing the whole damn thing. The outro is truly a great demonstration of DT's prowess at the time.

  39. E.... C....

My favorite album of all time. This song's ending could be played on repeat for the rest of my life and I'd never get tired of it. And I don't care what anyone says; the vocals on this album are the best ever.

  40. F.... B....

Kevin Moore, was the Dream in Dream Theater,he brought everything to life.he had everyone playing to there potential.the ending keys on this song, are haunting.Jordan is a completely different talent then Kevin Moore.Kevin is much missed in Dream Theater, but still love his solo music,Osi,playing with Fates Warning, and now Tuesday The Sky.

  41. P.... ....

    Fucking love this song <3

  43. C.... ....

The intro of this song reminds me of Halo 2 a lot. When your going trough the alleys is New Mombasa or something.

  44. B.... ....

This album had everything to be my favorite DT album ( a mix of dark tone and beautiful melodies) but i don't know, something sounds off, maybe because the production is weird (the music sounds like it was recorded really far away, i don't know how to explain it exactly).
I love the "scarred" intro and outro tho, the mirror, lie, caught in a web and of course space dye vest (this piano melody is one of the best ever made in my opinion)

    B.... ....

They put a lot of reverb on the instruments, but even more in Labrie's voice, this is why the band sound like if they were playing far far away.

    B.... ....

yeah and Lifting Shadows is a fucking horrible song imo. Everything else is gold tho.

    B.... ....

@necroplastful come on don't be silly, the vibe it has is brilliant

  45. J.... P....

guys, if your a true dreamtheater fan , than just appreciate that they are still around, them guys have written it all..what else more do u want ..if u love their "90's" music ,than its always there for u to go back on..I do agree petrucci did get to good. lol..I've been a true fan for 22 yrs and love everything they do.and I'm so thankful that the guys haven't given it up yet..my world will not be the same the day I have no more dreamtheater albums to look forward to..it always gives me a Lil excited kid feeling when they have a new album or live DVD.. let's just enjoy and spread dreamtheater to younger generations... DREAMTHEATER, TO LIVE FOREVER...

    J.... P....

D/T has genuinely good songs and I hope that's a sign of what's to come!

  46. V.... ....

8:15 - When you make the guitar your bitch and she screams for more in pleasure

  47. M.... D....

    "This is progressive metal"

  48. K.... ....

    Moore is more.

  49. F.... D....

Imo- I love Jordan to death but there was just such a different vibe with writing back in the day with Kevin Moore.

  50. s.... ....

one of Labrie's best, belting out some strong emotions.. the rest of the guys? perfectly putting this song together

  51. J.... J....

well, it was the best way to spend the last ten minutes of this year

  52. k.... ....

3:01 CAN'T LET THEM RAPE ME AGAIN

  53. d.... ....

This is a good example of why F-sharp minor is one of my absolute favorite keys. DT just blows my mind...

    d.... ....

Excuse me brother but You are a little bit wrong the key of this song is in B minor anyway this song is very beautiful

  54. P.... P....

    420 comments, until this one....

  55. J.... M....

The best Dream Theater album !

  56. A.... S....

    Prog Metal at its finest

  57. S.... ....

At 10:00 is where this little baby right here gets bestial.

  58. L.... J....

Petrucci's tone was perfect here. These days there's way too much in the mids.

  59. J.... T....

Good old times! Darker, more progressive and more melodic music by Dream Theater!

    J.... T....

i miss these years, it'll be perfect if DT make some more heavy album in future : ) as good as for example "train of thought" : )

    J.... T....

If you like the more melodic approach to Prog Metal, check out the new german Progressive Metal Band Pantaleon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNonmzAV8dY

  60. A.... P....

eita saudades de Kevin more e portnoy!!!!!

  61. D.... C....

5:10 one of the many great parts of this song

    D.... C....

Exactly, how Kevin's parts are holding the song, blending well with Petrucci's arpeggios and Portnoy's snare is simply artistic genius!

    D.... C....

Vivek Viswanath and james voice, just perfect

  62. K.... ....

    sooo open your eyeeeeeeesssss

  63. C.... t....

9:26 until the end; I have no words...

    C.... t....

    Cam the Drummer This!

  64. s.... ....

DT's crowning achievement to me.. every element of the band was in full stride on this album

  65. H.... M....

back when DT used to write actual songs... still nowhere as good as RUSH!

  66. T.... M....

I have been the biggest DT fan since the 80's but I hate the singer. Kevin Moore is a mediocre pianist/keyboard but Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci must have hooked up through Eharmony because those two were made for each other. It is often hard to tell who is shredding. Rudess or Petrucci sound so similar, write nearly identical styles and have an obvious tight connection. It is too bad about Mike Portnoy though. At least he is playing with another awesome band. Breathtaking drummer, although the bassist John Myung does enough to cut it I think he should have been a little more up to the level the rest of the band is at. OMG can you believe Lars Ulrich had the audacity/balls and confidence to try out for DTs new drummer position. HA.....ROFLMAO. Stick to Metalica dude, there is no way in hell he fits the bill. That fucker can't double kick for shit. Don't get me wrong And Justice For All is at least one if not THE reason I got into metal but playing for DT, give me break. All they had to do was audition him trying to play Dance of Eternity and he would have looked like a retarded kid throwing snack packs and digging in the dirt. Way too overrated drummer.

    T.... M....

You cannot compare both keyboards each one of them have diferent Styles, in fact, Yngwie Malmsteen called Kevin Moore to play some keyboards in his songs ruddes is a virtuoso and he is great but in music sometimes less is more and Kevin Moore was and expert in that way

  67. M.... A....

Listen carefully to the quality of Kevin's parts, specially the lead ones. These were the most inspired times...

    M.... A....

check out his solo work, it's awesome

  68. J.... G....

no he escuchado otro solo que me ponga la piel de pollo, petrucci es un maestro completo sin duda.

  69. M.... D....

Portnoy is so perfect in this one...!!!

  70. M.... D....

    what a High-end song!!!!!

  71. P.... ....

best outro of the old tracks from DT, GREAT!!!

  72. P.... M....

    The best song of DT

    P.... M....

    agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    P.... M....

Pablo Matheus That’s a bold statement my friend but for me “Awake “ is my fav D T release and tour \m/

  73. D.... L....

Those were the days. Portnoy...Moore...LaBrie could still sing...

    D.... L....

Exactly buddy. I feel you! I miss Kevin Moore. As a matter of fact, I really miss the old DT.

    D.... L....

Diego Lima indeed.. Falling into infinity is almost nothing as an album compared to this

    D.... L....

@w7class you cant say that. Derek does a well fine job on that one. Some songs are ass yeah but the good cuts on FII are incredible. Lines In The Sand, Trial of Tears, Peruvian Skies.... No you cant say that man...

  74. R.... F....

    THAT KEYBOARD SOLO

  75. s.... ....

Just close your eyes when the outro comes out 9:30 and listen to all of the single parts till the end of the movement 10:53. Every instrument, every rythm... just amazing.

    s.... ....

    Is unreal ... ❤

    s.... ....

My favorite part of the song!
Send us to another dimension. Great atmosphere! Beautiful and dark!

  76. M.... W....

Still one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. This album is truly one of a kind and proves anyone that thinks dream theater is overrated completely wrong

    M.... W....

DT isn't overrated but man have they gone to shit compared to their heyday

  77. B.... G....

the singing is so good on this one!

  78. A.... H....

Just ran into a reddit thread comparing 5:31 to part of the Wheel of Fortune theme from 1989. And I'm laughing my head off at the similarity.

  79. T.... M....

Brilliant song. So much emotion. I believe every DT song has an entire play to accompany it. And definitely a Petrucci solo masterpiece, dualing solos that cascade! Music is so powerful!!

  80. L.... U....

Definitely, the best song ending of all DT discography. I almost always feel awesomely uncanny when I hear it. There must be some black magic into this.

    L.... U....

And nobody mentions Ministry of Lost Souls...

    L.... U....

Anthony M. Don't forget "a change of seasons"

    L.... U....

A change of Seasons outro always gives me chills.

    L.... U....

    Totally

  81. e.... ....

    Best piece in Awake!

  82. W.... H....

5:13 to 6:25 -- this part is just pure genious and dark. epic piece of work all around. Love the haunting feels of this song and album. That's why Awake stands as my favorite DT record.

    W.... H....

mine too.. I hear a lot about Images and Words, but this one is dearer to me

    W.... H....

Dude, this is my favorite part of this song, and the LaBrie's vocals are fucking amazing.

    W.... H....

It is indeed the best part of the song, I don't like how Ruddess change the part a bit for the Live in Boston Concert but I am really glad they played the Awake selection before playing Illumination Theory

    W.... H....

I'd say it's more romantic :) At least from is.

    W.... H....

Kevin moore's touch really influences the dark and haunting nuance. .

  83. P.... K....

Awake is the best album I like!

  84. D.... ....

Wow, James hit some major high notes here.  I saw this performed live a few years ago and unfortunately his vocals will never again be like 2:49 and 4:16.

    D.... ....

@DRW1107 3:01 "can't let them rape me again"

    D.... ....

+DRW1107 Yeah, some time ago i read a interview to LaBrie, and he said he had some problems with his voice but he couldn't stop working, he will never sing as good as i&W or Awake sadly.

  85. j.... b....

My favorite DT song, but DT is too light for me

  86. 7.... ....

There's something about their old albums. I don't know if it's cause it was 90's or the production or songwriting but their newer albums just suck in comparison.

    7.... ....

+7d7e7f7 younger fresher ideas, some self restraint and more focus on the songs themselves, and they actually had a producer so the album sounded good :P

    7.... ....

+7d7e7f7 The difference in old Dream Theater and new Dream Theater is their lack of cohesiveness nowadays. They used to play more like a band where the 5 band members meshed so well together. Nowadays, it's 5 guys doing individual parts with transitions to one another. I haven't bothered with Dream Theater since Octavarium, which is sad since older albums hold a special place in my heart.

    7.... ....

100% Agreed. Petrucci became too talented for his own good. Now he has a mathematical hot dog style as opposed to a passionate hot dog style like Dime Bag RIP. In my opinion, he uses way too much math to compose and somehow forgot he should play the songs rather than write them out and quit rushing it before it is ready. Back in the day, their crossovers were perfect now they just want to take any random riffs and string them into a song. Bad DT Bad

    7.... ....

the ministry of lost souls also had a good ending imo

    7.... ....

I agree, the earlier albums have a very groovy vibe to them.

  87. j.... d....

This has gotta be in my top 5 favorite songs ever.

    j.... d....

+john doe it's brilliant, but would struggle to make my Top 5 DT songs, such is the quality of their songs. I would rate it as 3rd or 4th on "Awake". But hey these guys are from a different musical planet

  88. K.... K....

"Won't let them feel me with their molested rubber legs!"

  89. C.... ....

I love how John's guitar sounds at times so much as Alex Lifeson's one, What a big influence Rush was/is on DT's sound for real.

  90. J.... v....

    Riff Riff Riff

  91. M.... O....

This is one of the best Dream theater songs in my opinion and i been a fan for 20 years. This song just never stop to deliver.

  92. C.... M....

9:30 quizás, la mejor atmósfera creada por Dream theater. Aunque Jordan le dio grandes cosas a Dream, se extraña mucho a Moore ahora.

    C.... M....

+Cristopher Martinez I just love this ending!

    C.... M....

Me da ganas de llorar, el ending más hermoso de la historia de la música para mi.

  93. e.... ....

5:03 "Leavin' the sauce behind" xD

    e.... ....

    OMG ahaha

  94. e.... ....

    myung's a savant!

  95. D.... ....

check out my review from this album http://beprogmyfriend.blogspot.com.es/2014/07/awake-es-el-tercer-album-de-estudio-de.html

  96. N.... M....

I'm amazed by the comments here about how Moore's more of a genius than Rudess when for the most part all he's doing is rooting whatever Petrucci is playing... Moore was definitely a good keyboardist, but not on par with the rest of DT's talent and creativity. I think it'd be great if Rudess was part of DT from it's inception. I'll be off to listen to mp2, Octavrium, or DToE now if you'll excuse me.

    N.... M....

+v1629 sorry but albums like DToE and Octavarium suck in comparison to Images and Awake.

    N.... M....

Roberto Pinto Most of the melodies from Metropolis pt 2 were written by Derek Sherinian. To proove this, listen to the Metropolis pt 2 demo (which is a 20-minute song and was meant to be in the album FII). Derek is the keyboardist there, and parts from that song are included in Metropolis pt 2 album. So I would say that Metropolis pt 2 is a masterpiece by Jordan and Derek both.

    N.... M....

Man I think Moore was more of a soul player than the other keyboardists Dream Theater had so far. I mean even though he wasn't more technical than Rudess or Sherinian He could put a lot of emotions on the song.

    N.... M....

It's not a competition. No one should focus on such things. Enjoy or find something else.

    N.... M....

You ve got to be joking :)

  97. C.... ....

The bass intro remember me the bass intro of Keep on Moving (Deep Purple)

  98. L.... D....

There's a certain melody and darkness in this album that's missing in the rest of their catalog and I entirely attribute it to Kevin Moore. When he left, the band headed into the technical direction and 20 years later, they haven't been able to recreate this combination of darkness, atmosphere, melody and groove. Moore is so good at creating a wall of sound to compliment the dark tones of the Petrucci's distortion and Labrie's voice. I just love how dark this album is... you don't have to downtune, do growls and blast beats to have a dark album. THIS IS DARK AND ITS LOVELY! I still listen to this album to this day..

    L.... D....

Lloyd D'Souza, I think you nailed it

    L.... D....

    Kevin Moore!!!!!

    L.... D....

Space Dye Vest ishim hauntingly saying goodbye. After release he announced he was done dream theater said we never would have put it on the album had we known it's true meaning

    L.... D....

@Lloyd D' Souza Mike wasa jerk big-time. Space Dye Vest is him Kevin saying goodbye the rest had no idea till it was already released

    L.... D....

@kigawman considering he was the magic i don't blame him. What has Mike portnoy done nothing whinery dogs and Ritchie was the heart

  99. J.... C....

With Kevin, they were 100% Dream. Without Kevin, 100% Theater.

    J.... C....

    With Jordan more than dream!

    J.... C....

    Jacob Crescent agree

    J.... C....

    kevin is DREAM
