Dream Theater - S2N Lyrics

Are we paying attention or are we drifting?
Too much negative action, not enough positive reaction

What's the state of humanity?
Where's the peace and the harmony?
Free the signal, your inner voice
Time to transcend, block out the noise

Signal to noise becomes the answer
The world keeps turning as we latch on to the wheel

Have you heard the news?
A surging sea of circumstance
Pain, starvation, war, abuse
Sterile gloves hide dirty hands

Shocking truth, climate change
Floods and fires, hurricanes
Overdose, suicide
Innocent die
Fear and race, endless lies
Sex and faith, terrorize
Drugs and guns taking lives
Innocent die

Signal to noise becomes the answer
The world keeps turning as we latch on to the wheel
Signal to noise defines the reason
The world keeps turning as we latch on to the wheel
Our wounds begin to heal

Signal to noise becomes the answer
The world keeps turning as we latch on to the wheel
Signal to noise defines the reason
The world keeps turning as we latch on to the wheel
Our wounds begin to heal
The chatter disappears and the message is revealed

Definitiv the right direction. Love that one - it's Like the old one...

  4. d.... ....

Distance over time feels like the DT equivalent of Slayer's - Divine Intervention. Why I really do not know.

  5. D.... ....

Sounds like a DT version of Cygnus X-1 but off the Falling Into Infinity album. Awesome!!

  6. d.... ....

  9. M.... R....

I'm so disappointed at their concert I went to last week: they played this song and Owen Wilson was not there.

  10. R.... P....

    1:55 - 2:00 awesome

  11. K.... ....

The very first non boring song I heard from DT, congratulations!

  12. L.... Z....

I finally can hear the bass again. Loud and clear. My favorite song since "A Nightmare To Remember".

  13. R.... S....

I really wonder what this band has with Owen Wilson.

  14. D.... ....

    Cygnus X-1!!

  15. a.... ....

Que le pasa a DT con Owen Wilson? 😳

  16. V.... C....

That cymbal work on the chorus though...

  24. E.... O....

I have to say that my brain is still in recovery mode from taking in so many high level, important riffs.

  25. H.... M....

My fav track off the album!

  26. E.... G....

    Heaviest things in universe:
    3. Neutron Stars

  27. n.... d....

4:46 Damn this is a headbanger

  28. F.... L....

    2:10 *headbangs till dies*

  29. W.... b....

    that WOW ahaha

  30. K.... ....

Okay, so literally everybody knows about the "wow." My question is: am I insane or is James singing "DIG-nal to noise..." immediately afterward? I assume this might be a nod to Owen Wilson's debut role as Dignan in Bottle Rocket, especially because he pronounces the "S" so clearly in all other uses of "signal."
It's not completely infeasible...they've used sound bites from Wes Anderson's films before.

    K.... ....

maybe owen wilson is reading your thoughts
its probably safer to wrap some aluminum foil around your copy of bottle rocket for a while better safe than sorry

    K.... ....

I think it's a vocal quality thing. Singers replace the "es" consonant with the "th" diphthong when it's acceptable, and at that particular moment a hissing es would come in during that split second of silence, making it much more pronounced in the mix. If you listen closely, he's actually singing it like "thignal to nahise" (because long O vowels are avoided as well).

  31. s.... ....

4:47 oh my lord that's a nasty fucking dirty riff

  32. J.... C....

As if the album wasn't great enough already. Owen Wilsons performance on this album is fucking incredible! 10/10 - Stellar.

  33. J.... A....

Rush and Dream Theater in a melting pot.

  34. s.... ....

    I'm delusional.

  35. T.... ....

    the fucking time signatures dude

  36. J.... P....

Mangini, we love you brother!!!! Your the shit!!!!!

  37. s.... ....

Guys ive listened to you for 15 years now, and i must say, the vocal mixing is the best its ever been, you still have it James. All you guys for that matter. This album is fantastic! I will still argue metropolis scenes from a memory pt2 is the best album in human history, but this is a nice change of pace. I would still love to hear another masterpiece epic like that, where essentially the entire album is one song that tells a vivid story and is soooo dynamic in the song style selection from gold tracks like "the spirit carries on" to technically difficult pieces like "dance of eternity". You guys are amazing and i pray you guys never stop just having fun with your music, much love guys!

  38. G.... H....

    https://youtu.be/Vsy1U38TVps new song

  39. G.... ....

2:06 - 2:12 FUCKING EARGASM! DT IS BACK!!!

  40. A.... C....

Imagine being ballsy enough to hide the stankiest riff of the album at the END of this song

  41. O.... C....

When did they become so boring?

  42. M.... D....

Mike Mangini, He did very well (y)

  43. J.... A....

So Owen Wilson. Us connected with DT?

  44. y.... ....

Dunno if anyone else made this connection, but the "Wow" was put there because that's what the scientists said when they picked up what seemed to be a signal from distant space back in the day. I'm too lazy look up the details.

  45. D.... V....

I love this album, but I find the chorus of S2N pretty weak. In comparison, LOVE the chorus of "Fall into the Light", "Barstool Warrior", "Pale Blue Dot", etc, etc. Personal opinion.

  46. T.... S....

Fucking 'wow' are you kidding my DT. Damn, it just makes me love these guys so much more

  47. H.... T....

I can't believe how shit this entire album is

  48. D.... K....

Do anybody gets that Mike portnoy is singing in this song 1:32 and ¹:40 Easter egg!!! Is him!! Or what????

  49. A.... D....

How many of you all remember the riff from 4:47 was referenced from the jamming part during the drummers autidion back then ? Damnnnn

    A.... D....

yeah I thought the same thing. It sounds like the thing that they were making the drummers play.

  50. B.... -....

I’m still not convinced this isn’t just an unreleased, incredibly good B-cut from Falling Into Infinity. This is so late 90’s DT, and I love it.

  51. D.... K....

I can get this song out of my mind!!! Everything omg!

  52. D.... ....

    *wow* 4:01

  53. F.... A....

The bass intro, looks like 'Cygnus X1' by Rush!
    I love it!

  54. B.... ....

    1:50 sick af

  55. C.... Z....

The best song on the album

  56. s.... ....

    4:47 that's a dirty headbanging riff,hell yeah

  57. G.... ....

Falling into infinity, a bit of Metropolis 1 and add to it RUSH!!!! The old DT is fucking back!!!!!!

  58. M.... D....

the bass at the beginning it has been a panic attack for me lol

  59. U.... ....

Signal to Noise Ratio, ok. But what would be the REAL meaning of S2N?

  60. W.... ....

4:15 Everytime I hear James LaBrie sing "REEEEEA-SOOOOOON!!!" I just love it!

    W.... ....

Ya the bass line kicks up a whole tone and sounds so full right there!

  61. P.... J....

Is that a mother fucking Owen Wilson reference?

  62. A.... R....

Those drum strokes at 4:47 !

  63. a.... ....

Excelente... por cierto, soy el único que escucha cosas que le recuerdan a Liquid Tension Experiment en este CD?

  64. A.... R....

@4:00 i hear Owen Wilson saying "WOW!"

  65. R.... M....

I played this for my dad (we’re both drummers) and he absolutely loved it! He downloaded it on Prime and plays it for his buddies. They are blown away by this. He is also getting the extended cd.
Did I mention that he is 80 years old and I am 57? We still love DT!!

    R.... M....

An Than Van Man Tan , I guess I didn’t at first. Thank you for pointing it out.

    R.... M....

Maximilian Schrörs , no harm done, brother. I took it the wrong way. My deepest apologies to you.😔

    R.... M....

    That's awesome!

    R.... M....

@Robert Mueller I mean, your name, and then you say "We still love DT!" Seriously, how does that not get more traction?

    R.... M....

There's nothing more Awesome than when your dad LOVES your music choices.. I was lucky to have a dad like that.. Turned him on to ELP back in 1975, and he was Blown Away.. some people just can recognize virtuosity when they hear it.. That's what I like.. show me your BEST talents..

  66. R.... d....

This song is like a freight train , destroying everything on his way , so powerfull , Petrucci , oh my God !!!!!!!!!!!!

  67. F.... B....

    Mangini drumming is insane

  68. A.... C....

    OWEN WILSON XDDDD

  69. a.... j....

When I hear that ending riff I can just imagine John with no shirt on at an oil rig playing the riff whilst a load of sweaty, dirty muscular men are hard at wor.. I'm just gonna shut up now

  70. M.... N....

    That "wow" is the shit

  71. .... ....

    Wow, So djenty!!

  72. F.... D....

    Nice one!

  73. b.... ....

LINES IN THE SAND+THE LOOKING GLASS+THE DARK ETERNAL NIGHT

  74. L.... ....

The Chorus sounds a lot like Looking Glass :D

  75. A.... B....

    Love love love

  76. D.... S....

This song is just flat out sick. Holy shit!

  77. t.... ....

The first 50 seconds give me a Queensryche vibe.

  78. S.... W....

My favorite song on the album.

Band: Uh oh, we're under 5 minutes. What are we gonna do???

    Jordan: I got this...

  79. m.... ....

Similar to 'Build your cages' by Pulse Ultra

  80. M.... T....

E esse baixo aí no começo, que foda

  81. K.... K....

Wow! WTF! Think that was Owen Wilson... This album made me by a ticket to see them again live; see you in Red Bank! INCREDIBLE!
