Drake, Nick - Way To Blue Lyrics

Don't you have a word to show what may be done
Have you never heard a way to find the sun
Tell me all that you may know
Show me what you have to show
Won't you come and say
If you know the way to blue?

Have you seen the land living by the breeze
Can you understand a light among the trees
Tell me all that you may know
Show me what you have to show
Tell us all today
If you know the way to blue?

Look through time and find your rhyme
Tell us what you find
We will wait at your gate
Hoping like the blind.

Can you now recall all that you have known?
Will you never fall
When the light has flown?
Tell me all that you may know
Show me what you have to show
Won't you come and say
If you know the way to blue?

Drake, Nick Way To Blue Comments
  1. MAX BACON

Such a cheerful bugger is he that maybe someone should report him for toxic emissions of sadness and despair!.

  2. Karen Hannegan

I imagine a medieval troubadour would sound just like this. The beauty, the simple genius of the words and melody....heavenly. Timeless. Eternal.

  3. Animal Kriminal

    Breathtakingly siiik

  4. Ken Shersley

    Crying like a baby.

  5. Ken Shersley

Haven't listened to this for 15 years. Now I remember why. Happiness isn't something you experience - it's something you remember (Oscar Levant). God this shakes me to the soles of my feet. Poor Nick.

  6. pykkervots

And still no footage of the adult Nick? Although the brief YouTube clip of the back of a tall willowy man at a festival is compelling

  7. antonini94

mi meraviglio sempre di quanta bellezza avesse dentro quest'uomo

  8. kenneth furlong

I came up with other ways to love ,new northern sky and several similar titles when shortly after this I found nick weird but not so weird if your an artist he did inspire my open c tuning and the songs just came my roommate at the time freaked out

  9. kenneth furlong

yes!!!!!! whiners are rewarded if they hang in long enough I mean look at the fake news learn the truth about the ages coming chickens coming home to roost lol I mean I was affected directly by the fake news essentially my family faked homelessness to gain a go fund total of 200 000 dollars wow talk about hurting yes mediocrity rules

  10. Mary Clark

While I prefer the Five Leaves Left version of this song, this version fits with the video. Just piano and nicks raw voice lends to the sadness while viewing the images of him as a baby and a little boy. The hope, the bright future and the promise that was cruelly ripped away upon his death. Such a beautiful soul and rare artist. Nick, you are much mourned.

  11. Larry Dwyer

When you need to cry he will pull it out of you.

  12. Kate Brown

Hmm. Interesting song. Another melancholy one from his collection. This song is a little too sorrowing for me.

  13. Bärbel Nitsche

    Thank you so much !!!

I recently acquired Pink Moon. He was a unique talent, for sure. This strikes me as the music people listen to just before slitting their wrists. The guy sure felt things deeply, and that's not a criticism of his art. On a sidenote, I came to this song because I was worried that he made a common mistake in that he was meaning to say he was "Way Too Blue". Happy to see I was wrong. The struggles of grammar naht-see's are real.

  25. Michael Alderete

Otherworldly. Sounds almost like a personal demo being worked out on a piano, just lovely and melancholic.

  26. Kate Orland Bere

No way did Nick Drake not understand his own massive talent. But depression beats to its own drum. sadly. That is why his music touches so many.

  29. Limetalimetalimeta

Are they all original shots? Underwater shots had to be difficult at that time. I find it hard for my heart, I like his songs. He is still an unappreciated musician. His mother was very nice woman.

    Mary Clark

Did u know Mollie? I would have loved to have met her. Nick died 3 months before I was born. I discovered his music about a year ago and have been a huge admirer since. I'm not sure but I think the underwater shots and some of the scenery was edited in. They don't seem to have the same graininess as the home movies.

  30. Conor Black

no words can describe how perfect this is.

    Catharine phelps-terret

Isn't it just the most incredible sound to ever hear.I adore his music but this...xxx

Reminds me a little bit of XTC's _stunning_ song 'Rook'. At least, some parts of 'Rook' Either way, they're both fantastic songs!

  46. stephen jedlicka

Excellent video for this excellent track

  47. Ken Shersley

Very difficult to listen to this song. I generally skip over it. Too painful. And this video makes it so much harder! Tragically beautiful.

  48. Mark Robinson

"Can you understand/The light among the trees?" Yes, I can - the way that beauty can convey something unspeakable, and sometimes it reminds you that life is all too much and sometimes it's not enough - and sometimes it's both at the same time.
    Clinical depression is shit.

  49. Fat to Fierce

This takes you through so many emotions.. despair, hope, despair again and over and over until you get that glimmer of hope at the end. Beautiful.

    Second Life Around

The only thing I could find more beautiful than this song was your profile picture. <3

  50. Orkid. music

  51. Alex O'Dowd

Sheeran's latest video got 5times more views in as many hours as this track has in nine and a half years..... Muse upon that for a moment. O*D

  52. Ian JH

This video is not available. I'm sure Nick would've been proud.

  53. Hunter Leachman

Am I really high !?!?!? Oh wait no I'm just listening to Nick Drake.

  54. bigmikeydread

Nick Drake was still virtually unknown to anyone in the mid 1980s, I first got played a record by him in 1985, just before the first tranche of early re-releases. It was at this point that interest amongst a few grew, Pink Moon, the only fanzine at the time was our only source of information. People shared his records like a religion and those that knew spread the word. He's one of those artists who inspires an evangelical zeal amongst his fans. I listened to the Dutch radio interviews with him and the home recordings when the only way you could get hold of them was on cassette.

Really it's the internet and a highly intelligent marketing strategy that has brought him to the world's attention and put his records in Sainsbury's supermarkets. I can remember the day I first heard one of his songs being used as background on a documentary. And frankly if you can recall the surprise you felt as you realised he was becoming known and more mainstream, then you were one of the reasons his popularity and reputation has grown.

Nick was ignored at the time because he wouldn't engage, not just because people didn't engage with him. He let's you into your own soul with his music..

  55. BadSpeech

Great video. We are very fortunate that there are so many good photos and footage of his infancy. And yet there's no footage of him playing live or even just playing.

  60. Patricia Herlevi

Could Nick Drake have been the predecessor for the English shoe gazer bands and the 4AD label of the 1990s? When I was performing and writing songs (1990s), I leaned towards melancholy too. I am one of the lucky ones to have healed my chronic depression. I wonder what would have happened had Nick been born into a different era?

    Lord Jagged

He wouldn't have been Nick, the Nick you recognise at least.

  61. Peter van Zalm

Does anyone know if this version was published on CD? If so, which one?

  62. adamscott

This is from 1969? A lot of his work sounds much more modern than the era it was written in.

I bought Pink Moon when it came out. I was 14 and I fell in love with Nick Drake. I bought the other 2 albums and loved him even more. I was heartbroken when he died, and still am when I listen to his songs. Depression is a terrible thing. He was extraordinary but didn't know it.

    Harry Vsingersongwriter

  78. J Wright

amazing video too, the music speaks for itself

  79. Cai

wow so there is video footage of him :)

    Christine Milne

+cspj12 yes but not as an adult. The video footage of him as a child is heart breaking. He looks so happy. It could all have been so different but if it was perhaps we wouldn't have all those wonderful songs.

  80. silencesfell

Does anyone know if any live footage has been released of Nick as an adult/teenager?
This is lovely, though. Thanks, Island Records.

    Ronnie Guitar

He was very reclusive as an artist. Did not want to perform live, too shy to do anything to promote himself. I don't think there is any video of him performing live. He was way ahead of his time, only in the 21st century is his music finally appreciated for it's timelessness.

    silencesfell

@ronnieguitar99 Shame. I was hoping for some home videos or Cambridge footage, at least, but I guess that if there was anything else they'd have released it by now.

  81. Isabel Archer

    ...tell us all today
if you know the way to blue...

  82. Luis Godio

    beautiful sadness

  83. Kelly Adams

So beautiful, but in my opinion very under-rated. He's ineffable with enigmatic lyrics at the same time.  I wish Nick Drake was played on more than the Indie channels!  However I adore this song the most.

    silencesfell

Nick Drake is practically mainstream now. :)

  84. Rhona McGill

Nick Drake somehow manages to communicate the ineffable and intangible. This "cut-back",  version of  "Way to Blue", with its solitary strikes on the piano keyboard, conveys a sense of being at one with the ebb and flow of nature. It reminds me of  ephemeral innocence and transitory childhood. The poignant, paused notes that resonate from the piano keyboard in an empty room remind us all of our own mortality. It's such a beautiful song; and he appears to be such a joyful, pensive,  whimsical "nature child",  that it makes me cry.... His voice and music makes for such a transcendental experience! We lost him too soon and yet he takes us with him... xxx

    Flower

Oh!  Indeed! Fine words, Rhona McGill

    Benjamin Huxley

    wow beautiful put

  85. Laurien

Thank you Island records for this!  What a lovely thing to do for Nick's family, friends and MILLIONS of fans like me!

  88. poeta067
