Was at an open mic last night and a guy sang this song...I'm so glad Doris has a version of it! I simply love her voice. So smooth, so pure. The tonal quality... Beautiful, beautiful. Discovered her maybe 10 years ago.. As far as voices go, I truly believe she's one of the best. Right at the top with Ella. Thanks for the upload!

I remember this from my high school days. A few years later I was in Alabama a riding in a convertible at night. I swore you could pluck a star right out of the sky there, and, I thought, well Doris Day, you nailed it! Loved it since.

@Michael Stewart Quite popular here in the Fl panhandle and southern Al. Sort of replaced Dixie as the Alabama state song, and no one and I mean no one sings it better than Ms Doris.

I don't know what to say. A beautiful glamorous song.

She said in her autobiography that while she was convalesing after the train/car wreck that ended her dancing career at that time.... that she started listening to the radio and singing along with Ella. Ella was definitely a big influence on Doris. And she also credits her voice coach, Grace Raine. She said Grace told her to sing as if she were singing to just one person. I love her songs where she has that intimate, singing just to you feeling. She does it so well !

Doris was a patient of mine in the mid 50s and she always spoke reverently of Ella "Fitz."

She certainly is amazing ! I think there was a period where she was sort of put down by the in group in Hollywood during the 60s. I think many of those people have changed their tune. One of the most publicly to say so was film critic Roger Ebert - who basically said he was wrong ! She's been receiving a lot of recognition in the last few years. Lifetime Grammy & LA Film Critics Award are a couple. She is an amazing lady !!

She has always been respected for her vocals. She was a superstar throughout the whole decade of the 1950s. Her favorite singer (if I remember correctly) was Ella Fitzgerald. Listen to Ella, then listen to Doris, and you'll hear the influence.

Doris Day? Are you kidding me? No, we're not. Her image actually got in the way of her artistry. Here's proof.........

I wonder the same thing. I read Considering Doris Day by Tom Santopietro. One idea he offers is - she made it look so easy that people think it is, when in reality its far from easy. She has immense talent and is one of the best at interpreting a lyric. I think she's getting more recognition in recent years - but not what she deserves. She's one of the best !

I wonder why Doris isn't more respected today for her vocals. She's got a voice like melting buttter, so smooth and creamy. No one like her.....EVER. absolutely a one of a kind singer. She got better and better through her career. I just can't get over what she can do with her voice. amazing...absolutely amazing tallent

@Solorider551 I know what you mean. I started listening to my mom's Day albums when I was 10 .... but then being a teenager in the late 60s early 70s listened to a lot of hard rock. But, I've always had this side that loves the 40s and 50s music....and its full blown now !! So happy you've enjoyed ... she has so many great songs !!

I was raised during the rock era, listening to the Stones, zeppelin, hendrix and all those guys... But one night my Dad was listening to this song of doris, and it was like booom !!! I just fell in love with her songs. Thanks for posting !

@333marian1 You're so right ... a truely classy lady ! Even in her not so good movies.. Doris was alwasy top notch .. she gave her all. She's still sounding good. I've heard a few recent interviews and she sounds wonderful !! She overcame some terrible things and has sure been an inspiration to many. I think a couple of my all time fave's are - They Say It's Wonderful and People Will Say We're In Love. She really does the best interpretation I've heard. @followthefleet1 Have to agree with you - I think Doris does a great interpretation of this song. She was definitely a serious recording artist with around 1100 songs. I think she often is over looked because after her band days and early radio show - she didn't sing in public. She was a recording star. But - I think she is one of the best at interpreting a song. I think this to be the definitive version of this song. I'll accept other nominations...but to me, this is the best, with Paul Weston and his orchestra. Day captures lots of nuance and emotion intrinsic to the music. Sunny Doris Day was a serious recording artist....and a good actress too.

I love Ella Fitzgerald. I have some records that I truely love. Enjoy her most when she's not doing her scat - as great as that is. Thanks and cheers !!

Well - I'm sorry coywin - but I do have to disagree with you. It was the other Doris Day that appeared in a Roy Rogers movie. Not this one. You can check it out on imdb. Look up Saga of Death Valley 1939 - this Doris would have been 15. This Doris made her 1st movie in 1949-Romance on the High Seas.
The Doris Day in that movie was born in 1910 and died in 1998. You can also find pictures of her on the web. Definitely a different Doris.

This is terrific. By the way, it was Doris
herself who pointed out the fact that she
had appeared itn Roy Rogers film after I
told her that when I was a kid, I wanted to
marry him when I grew up. Met him as an
adult and wondered what my attraction to
him was all about. Both he and Dale
Evans were a lovely couple and that was
it.
