Doris Day - Sentimental Journey Lyrics

Gonna take a sentimental journey
Gonna set my heart at ease
Gonna take a sentimental journey
To renew old memories

Got my bag and got my reservation
Spent each dime I could afford
Like a child in wild anticipation
Long to hear that "All aboard!"

Seven, that's the time we leave, at seven
I'll be waitin' up for heaven
Countin' every mile of railroad track
That takes me back

Never thought my heart could be so yearny
Why did I decide to roam?
Gonna take a sentimental journey
Sentimental journey home

Sentimental journey

This song goes to a Dutch Netherlands man suffering in my hometown with cancer here in Canada to which his family moved to later after the Second World War. He watched the Canadian tanks roll in liberating his home in The Netherlands Capital City Holland when he was only 6 years old, he is very grateful for the country of Canada who fought in WW2 and Brave Canadians who was willing to pay the ultimate price to save Europe and his home country of The Netherlands from Nazi Germany.

Doris Day used to laugh at her ultra wholesome image the studios used to portrait her as. She by her own admission was quite a naughty girl. 🥰😚🥰

My Uncle Don is gone now, along with his beautiful bride, my Aunt Adeline. He was one of the 101st Timberwolves, served throughout the European Theater and the War In Europe and lived through D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. On July 2nd, 1945, he boarded a troop ship that was 2x it's capacity; the returning GI's had to share bunks and sleep in shifts. Uncle Don told us that this song played at the docks in Pas de Calais as they were boarding the overloaded ship to go home; he used to tear up whenever this song played, and the family all cried like babies when my cousin Bruce played it on the trumpet at his funeral. (I think I might cry right now, just typing this.)

My Uncle Don was a wonderful man, a man of honor, intelligence and humor; like all WWII veterans, we owe him so much.
Thank you, Dayniac4324 for posting this.

Radio stations broadcasted the song "Sentimental Journey" shortly after Nov. 20, 1944 and so the song riding on those radio waves also incidentally radiated away into space since then. So come Nov. 20th, that song will have traveled 75 light years and will reach WISE 0305+3954 in the Perseus Constellation. God speed on your journey, Doris. [I had to distract myself from being too sad with her passing.]

  44. W.... D....

The Princess of America.... so sad she has passed, but what we get to keep of her is her amazing voice.

  45. s.... a....

    What a wonderful singer!

  46. z.... ....

The great thing is that Ms. Day took show business at her own pace, she it not allow its corrosive tendencies to destroy her own sense of worth.

Rediscover her about 2 years ago and love all the standard she sings. Heard her often in the 60s b60s when I was small. This is a lovely song that i mostly heard only the music but not the song.

  66. M.... H....

A true all American girl next door..Freckles, blonde hair and blue eyes..Plus a silky voice she was a stable growing up from the music to her movies..

  67. J.... Z....

I was driving through the deep woods of Minnesota once late at night- feeling lonesome on a cross country trip. Then Doris’s voice came over the radio singing this song and slipped me into a few minutes of bliss with her wonderful voice.

  68. s.... ....

    Love always Ms Day.♥

  69. S.... C....

But all in all I do love her music

  70. S.... C....

Doris Day was a slut. Nothing like her movie persona. She cheated on her husbands she squandered most of her money on herself. She had a ferocious appetite for men. She took advantage of them and they took advantage of her. Like it or not good bad or ugly that's the truth

  71. L.... T....

  80. T.... B....

This generation of World War 2 used a certain word to describe what was admired and aspired to, it was “Class”. Doris Day embodied “Class” in all of her work in music, movies, television and personal endeavors. I have fond memories of my Mother, who sang “Que Sera Sera” with me as a child as we watched The Doris Day Show on TV. I hope that the younger generation will someday see, that the many examples of people like Doris Day, and words like “Class” mean so much, and are what everyone should aspire to.There are many reasons why “The Greatest Generation” was so great, and one of the millions of reasons was Doris Day.

  81. j.... g....

It's a great song it's sad that Doris Day isn't no longer with us. I'm not from the Jazz era but I do remember her in movies. But listening to this song she could sure sing. When this song came out many young men were heading out to war. The journey would take them to the war in Europe or the Pacific. Many that were boarding the ships that were going off to war remember this sing. I've remembered her as an actress as well as a knock out blonde. She will certainly be missed.

  82. L.... W....

    She sang so beautifully.

  83. S.... O....

Love you and your music and movies Doris - Rest in Peace

  84. b.... ....

This song and Doris Day were sort of before my time, but when I saw her in movies, she always seemed to be the mother everyone wanted to have. She was very beautiful, kind and nice. The care she gave to animals was indicative of her kindness to all. If there is a God and heaven, she will have her reward. She used her given gifts for good.

  85. R.... M....

    Rest in Peace. QEPD

  86. T.... T....

God, listen to the power of that band when they come in on the bridge in the beginning. As a trumpet player, that sent chills up and down my spine, then again when Doris comes in. Listen with headphones for the effect.

    T.... T....

i hear ya Mr T ..the arrangement is sublime and Ms D's voice is so intimate and warm . . love the swells and richness of the sounds . . such wonderful breadth of music Doris sang... also loved that she was such an advocate for bicycling and kindness to animals... RIP Ms D
